Well, the catalog did not indicate smoke etc and the BFOC had no sound or smoke, so I wasn't expecting it.  OTOH - Yes, a smoke unit and a whistle & bell would have made it even better Thumbs Up

Quotes from my above pictures. The picture is taken from Popular Mechanics "RAILROAD ALBUM" dated 1954. The caption reads
Now in the Smithsonian, the John Bull is the oldest locomotive in America. Built by Stephenson in 1831 for the Camden & Amboy RR,it originally looked much like the other early four-driver locomotives. The pilot truck, with it's cowcatcher, was added when it was rebuilt in 1833; the headlight, whistle and bell were added later. [Pennsylvania RR photo]

From the other Photo taken from "150 Years of Train Models" [1999]
The John Bull remained in service until 1865. In 1893 it ran 973 miles from New York to Chicago's Columbian Exposition with two coaches after which it was returned to the then U.S. National Museum in Washington, D.C., now the Smithsonian.

I love mine - great action on the locomotive and it runs very smoothly.  No smoke, bell or whistle, but I'm not sure if they had a whistle back then?  Bell?  It was made in England, right?  Nice set, glad I got it -- it can keep Buford the Best Friend of Charleston company while we wait for the Lion next!  I was very glad to find it has a working lamp!

Lots of tiny details and levers moving.  Wish they had slipped a smoke unit in it.  Miss Edna had one running yesterday.  Will not be paying $400+ for it.  Worth it to the collector or somone who likes to run early engines.

Look what I found under a bag of silica. Tha engineer and fireman, flags and two round things I have no idea what they are for. These items are not mentioned in the Owner's manual.

Very true brent ... lionroar .... much smaller and they were much more elaborate in trim also . Even the passenger coaches and other cars were decorated outside and extremely highly beautiful inside compared to later giants introduced . Solid hardwood engraved furniture instead of assembly line type furnishings .... in the higher end cars .  Real upholstered couches and chairs .... no flop down beds ... LOL . I don't know what year they went to the commercial type engines and cars .... ? I'm so glad lionel finally built a high end looking engine in that era ... hope they manufacture more .... geez ... maybe even some a bit lower in price ... yea right ... LOL . Seemed only On3 and 2 rail had the great detailed older engines until now .

I heard some concern about size. I know Lionel modeled this to scale and some have said it looks more like an HO engine than an O? Now back when the John Bull was first produced it was small... so you have to keep that in perspective.

Nice model though - thanks for sharing!

Looks Great!!!  What type of couplers did Lionel use on these? Are they the standard 3 Rail, Link and Pin, or some thing else?

The John Bull is as strong as a Bull with plenty of  power to easily pull the three coaches.Pardon the rough layout. Our house is being remodeled and the train room is Aaaa well [storage] The train runs like a fine watch. The engine does not have a E unit. A swt. is located on the roof under a cover for fwd and rev. The two traction tires provide the umpf. The detail is awesome.
