Morton Grove? Isn't that where Revell/Monogram Models is headquartered?

I hope the Chief gets some time to work on his train room.

Belated Happy Anniversary, Chief!

Worked downtown all day yesterday. When I was leaving, a lady pulled up in a big van full of kids (maybe 10 kids) and wanted to know where she could park for free around there. This is right next to St. Louis Union Station. They were going to the Hardrock Cafe. I told her she could park on some side streets by a factory on the other side of the railyard, but it would be dark soon and I wouldn't do it - there is a halfway house over there. Finally convinced her to cough up the $12 to park right next to the Hardrock Cafe, under a light, and be very careful. She kept telling me she's from a small town and parking is free there after 5PM, so I finally told her that St. Louis is too stupid to do something that might attract customers, which is why we all live out in the counties or outlying towns (like Arnold/Imperial etc) and just commute when we have to do so, spending as little money downtown as possible! I hope they made it out alright and didn't lose anyone! I parked over there once when our parking lot (which isn't free even for employees) was being cleaned and resurfaced and when I came out at the end of the day some guy was trying to cut through my plate to get the sticker in the middle - a$$h*l!

There used to be a cool train store in the Union Station, but it was way off at the far end and I only went there a few times. I think it has been closed for years now though.

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Good morning all,

Dennis, I thought Brunswick stew was always made with squirrel!

Roy, I loved that news article, sent it to a few friends.

Paul, aren't greenhouses great. Just love to go out there in the dead of Winter. This morning i walked in and discovered one of my portulaca (rose moss) seedlings was blooming, the flower is twice as big as the plant! The weather here for the past two weeks has been as bad as any we had all winter. About 2-3 weeks ago we had a great day and I got about half the back yard cleaned and old growth trimmed. Hasn't been nice to work outside since.

Doug, How about posting a picture of the Birney.

Good morning. Back from mass and breakfast. Sitting here reading a few posts so I can delay clean up from kitchen floor tile replacement work. I have been without a kitchen for well over a week now. It will be good to get it cleaned up and the tile sealed next week. Sunny but cool here today. Be well.

Roy - loved the terrorist article, sent it on to a couple of engineers that'll appreciate it.

Chief - come down hard on those involved. Time to nip any future problems in the bud, nothing like a few days of community service to wake them up, especially if being suspended from school is taken lightly. Seems like the parents might need a social worker paying them a visit.

Morning all! I think I just got a good deal.

I stopped by a second hand shop on an impulse because it was a nice day and I hadn't seen the place before and I had $20 that I was supposed to use to make dinner with but I thought maybe I'd see some old train mags or something I could be reading whilst I wait for the next installment of Lionel, there's a sale at Trainland this Saturday!

Anyway rummaging through a box of odds and sods I discovered a blue plastic locomotive, no tender, inside the shell it says 8040-6 and I bought it for $20 even though it looked a bit ratty and I used all my pocket money.

I reasoned that I could use it to make a British outline loco with, plastic is easier to work with that cast metal but the real reason I bought it was for the AC motor. When I got it home I fired it up and it ran perfectly and smoked too! Then I discovered that the internals are the same as my Atlantic, well the chassis is the same but its metal and the loco has a coil atop it with a switch that sticks up out of the boiler. I'm guessing thats a directional switch but I'll find out in a minute.

Called up the wife to confess as she might be expecting a hot dinner and could conceivably get a bit narky and she told me to go back and buy up the rest! God, I love her and You too as I cant imagine where that impulse came from otherwise!

PS Before I carve up that blue plastic shell with my Dremel, its not irreplaceable or anything, is it?

Cheers, Mike

Mike,
I have a 8040, no added numbers, but it was a cheap Sears set from the early 70's. Anyway, the metal part sticking up is a directional lever as you suggest. Mine is not Blue, and I have not seen one that is, so you may want to inquire further. I doubt it is anything special as they seem on the cheap side. Good luck with it and please post photos when you do your handiwork.

John, No, Brunswick stew is made with hog/pork, and usually the meat from the head, etc. The Squirrel is served with corn bread and greens. Now, some do make camp stew which has squirrel, hog, deer, and any other meat (except snake and possum). I actually work with a guy who makes and eats this and has been known to use roadkill, if it is fresh.

I worked in my kitchen today for 3 hours cleaning the whole thing after the tile setters completed their installation. I had covered the cabinets and counters and all the door ways except 2 with plastic, and still had a lot of dust to clean up. I couldn't get into the basement to run trains for about 2 weeks, so I ran them for about 40 minutes after I was done cleaning. Hungry now and need some groceries. Nice sunny and cool day here now. Later.

Evening everybody,

It has been a long week so far and work has been really busy. Last night our elementary school had a McTeacher night where the staff from the school do some of the jobs and the school makes some money. It was actually a lot of fun but really busy. I had to do the drinks and boy was it ever crazy. There were so many kids and family there that the lines went out the door. We made almost a thousand dollars for the 3 hours work. The kids had a good time seeing their teachers in a different role.

By the way, happy anniversary Chief, a little late.

Have a good night everyone.

Hello All ! Mike- Your Blue Engine is a Jersey Central version that Lionel Made in 1973 & also had the Sound of Steam in it. The number underneath the cab windows should be 8303 stamped in Gold leaf. No, they are not rare or expensive at all. Just a basic engine for that time period. The name of the Train Set it came with was the Blue Streak & they were a $50.00 Train at the time. I remember seeing them at Sears in the Great Lakes Mall in Mentor when they had a well stocked Toy Dept ( With plenty of Trains) Always enjoyed going there as a kid & looking at all of the new trains & at Christmas they had even more trains to see as well. Those were the days. Take Care all.

Evening All,
A belated Happy Aniversary to Mr & Mrs Chief.
Had a great day at the museum today, Don(dbaker) came down for a looksee and brought his Cabforward to run. WOW, is that one sweet engine and the MTH BigBoy ain't to shabby either. Especilly when it only cost $400. Talk about the rite place at the rite time. Don spent most of the time looking around the layout as well as the rest of the museum, I could see the wheels turning in his mind, and since he was so busy guess who ran the Cabforward. It's a dirty job but somebody has to do it. I shot a bunch of pictures, but this [censored] computer trashed the [censored] floppy. No Pictures. [:(!]
Don, I hope your photos turn out better than mine did.
He enjoyed the visit so much he took home an application for membership. [^]
Don't know if he will be dropping in tonite, probably pretty pooped after such a long day.

In between watching basketball (and snow falling outside - sheesh!), I saw the tail-end of an episode of That 70s Show. In it, the main character's dad inherited a box full of Lionel trains - full of orange and blue boxes! He set up a carpet layout - a huge oval with all sorts of tin-plate stuff. He extolled that he had 5 stations for five times as much fun...

What parents???? Being raised by poor Grandpartents [4 boys and 2 girls].

Busy day. Wired some of the greenhouse [this job requires three new pannels, one in shed, one in shop and one in greenhouse, plus new outlets, change out one breaker in main pannel in house]. Had to dress up and run to Raleigh for Dr. checkup. Went by Lowe's and got new post. Buried new post [this one is 6X6] deeper than old one. Reattached cable. No signs of kids nor beaver. Very quite down there this PM.

Ready for bed. Did not get to run trains tonight. Was tired and went to sleep in recliner. ZZZZZ
Goooood night and sleep thight.

Doug Murphy,

I was going to call you last night. Glad I didn't. You would have missed seeing those Lionels on tv! We'll hook up eventually.

Not much new here. I took out a toy train video from the library last night. They have a bunch of the I Love Toy Train DVDs.

I wonder what this weekend will bring. Maybe I'll fertilize the yard. Next weekend -- big train show! I'll be in monkee heaven as my mother used to say. Two days of toy trains. I plan to hit a few of the bigger train shops in the area as well. Can't wait. I've even told my boss that I'll be out of town for the weekend, just in case, heh heh. [;)]

Thankyou Dennis and Keith for the info on my blue engine. It runs well but I;m guessing 'the sound of steam' was a tender mounted device? Because theres a wire emerging from the cab that connects to the smoke unit and I cant figure where it went as the smoke unit functions and I dont have a tender.

Anyway its getting the reworking treatment. I'll take Before shots and After when its done but it wont be a quick job.

[code]Good Morning from Blueberryhill[/code]Well, no sun yet. It's 35 degrees and cloudy. Going to 45 and a chance of rain / snow or nothing today.
Chief......If you don't get busy with your benchwork, summer will be here and it will
sit until October. I have a feeling that's what will happen.
Well, it's a rather quiet day today. Have a few chores to do . Waiting on some buildings and train things to arrive. Seems like things are quiet on the " new products " front..

Morning, all!

Clear and chilly this AM. Back down in the low 30s at night for the next few days. High today only in mid-50s. At least it's sunny!

Belated anniversary congratulations to Chief and the missus. I've tried some floor running of trains this week, ala the Chief and have to say I'm ready for some benchwork! Every time I'd get up and down off the floors my knees popped so loud I thought someone was shooting at me!

What is it, Keith? A circuit board or an electro-mechanical device? Can I get one or, more to the point, do I need one - is it worth having?

I'll try and track it down on the Net but I havent had much luck with Lionel part number searches, all I get is those stupid one size fits all replies like "XYX Books has Lionel part no 8040-6."

I do like sounds though. Is there an easy way to fit an accessory that makes steam engine noises without having to go the whole DCC route? I've seen ads in Model Railroader for all sorts of sound chips for HO but I dont know enough about it to know if its what I need.

Is there a sort of add on board plus speaker that makes generic chuffing and hissing noises?

I'd like to do my Brit style conversion right and have all the bells and whistles too! It may take a while but I'll keep a log and take pictures so you can have a look when I'm done. As luck would have it that Blue comet model came out the same year I came to America so its rather a neat little plus to make it special to me.

Snowy in the suburbs - just cold in downtown Chicago. The rest of the academic world is going on spring break (students that is) and we're starting classes on Sat. Go figure. Got to speak with Jim (jaabat) this morning! It'll be the highlight of my day. Morton Grove is indeed the HQ of Revell/Monogram - I've visited their offices just to get a catalog a few years back - never made it to the train store yesterday. Still on the lookout for furnance filters this weekend.

Good morning all,

It is cloudy and cold in SE Indiana with the highs in the low 40s. It is snowing right now and I am in class for the last day for a while. There is a GATS show in Cincy this weekend, I think. Is anybody going to be there? I am trying to see if I have time to go. There is a Busch race and an IRL race this weekend that I am interested in, and my sister is visiting with her kids. There is too much to do. I hope everybody has a good weekend.

Keep on training,

Hello Mike! The Sound of Steam is a electronic circuit board housed in the tender. You can probably find a SOS Tender at a good train show or shop. They are still around. Try Warren's Model Trains & see if he has any spare Tenders.Give them a call at: 1-440-331-2900 or try Dr. Tinker's Toy Train website & see what he has. Good Luck.

Good Morning,

Had a few snow flurries here about an hour ago. Not sure what it is doing now as I have been in the basement for the last hour.

Chief, that must be tough for the grandparents, trying to raise 6 kids.

Tom, Looks like a busy weekend, I see the old smoker is still working.

Planning on doing a little train & greenhouse work.

Have a good one.
