Early TMCC GG-1 4907
Posted by J. Daddy on Thursday, February 5, 2009 1:46 PM

I bought the below 4907 TMCC equiped GG-1 which I think is a good mix of old school and new school. PW heft, tooling and looks, but with TMCC electronics...I think it was released in 1995 with no sound.  I would like to upgrade her with sound (i.e. horn, bell, motor etc), can anyone recommend which sound unit would fit and reflect the proper sound of a GG-1? Also when I change directions the rear light does not come on. Does this unit even have a rear operating light? Thanks

I've got the same engine with no sounds. The rear headlamp and marker lights
turn on when it's in neutral or reverse. It takes a small lamp; sorry but I don't know the number. I'll see if I can find my manual for mine and see if it says which bulb it takes.

I bought one when they first came out, I was still in high school so it had to be around 93. I looked awhile ago about putting sound and there wasn't alot of room. I decided not to do it. I was thinking of puting the sound system in a old boxcar like the old railsounds boxcar that Lionel put out.

I also bought this vrsion of the early TMCC GG-1. I was disappointed,  because it appeared to lack power as a loco with two motors. I eventually learned that the magna-traction of this particular loco retarded in some way its wheels and the loco was working against itself, so that if I were to run it at full throttle, it would go slow. I am no expert, but there were articles about how to fix this. I rmember one in in the Lion Roars. I tried to fix it, couldn't and traded it in at my LHS for the PWC Congressional set and cash..This latter GG-1 works fine. Also, I just bought the CC GG-1 Madison set and am satisfied with it, as well.  Good luck,  Mark

according to greenburg this engine was produce one year 1996 it is 6-18313 if you goto

http://www.lionel.com/media/servicedocuments/32610-8313-001Complete.pdf

it shows just one motor but the last diagram show wiring for 2 motors ???

But your lights are in there. with part numbers. if you still want to add sound try calling lionel and see if they made an aftermarket sound system to this as my 1996 GP-9 doesn't have coil couplers but they made an aftermarket set for it as it has sound and tmcc

Thanks guys, Yeah this I have not opened up to inspect yet, sat in a ware house for 10 years. I oiled her up and she works very smooth, seems to pull the 3 PW irvington cars with ease up a 3 percent grade, so I tend to keep her, but if I could find a sound board that would fit I will upgrade her...

Yeah the light must be out in the back, so I will open her up and see what I find.

go to lionel and find the parts list for the 6-18343 2332 PWC GG1, it has TMCC and railsounds and if it fits that one it should fit yours.

While not inexpensive, Dallee Electronics ( http://www.dallee.com/AC_Electric.html ) offers an extemely realistic GG1 Leslie S3 horn.

I had this engine for quite a while.  It too had the MagneTraction issue, which was very easy to fix.  I used two plastic shims to center the magnet and a drop of two-part epoxy on the magnet.  After the epoxy dried I pulled the shims and it worked perfectly after that.

Regarding sounds: I was told at the time by Digital Dynamics that the sound packages just wouldn't fit.  But boards have become much smaller since then.  Maybe an ElectricRailRoad package?

Hi Kooljock1, I tried that and another method using cardboard, but I suppose I didn't get the magnets centered properly and so it always dragged. I always liked this model and I am glad for you that you corrected it.

Just flip it over.  The MagneTraction magnets should be centered between the wheel sets and immovable.  If they move at all, they'll hit the inside of the wheel surface and act as a very effective brake.

To fix, just place carboard or plasic shims against the inner flat surface of the wheels.  Pull the magnets and add a drop of two-part "steel" epoxy.  Replace the magnet, and let it set up before removing the shims.

Easy ca-peezy!

I have this locomotive, and find it to be a great puller. I did haul 35 cars on the home layout without difficulty. I had sound added. Here it is in action:

The diagram lists the motor with the # (2) in parentheses.

I had a 4907 with the same problem (the wheels dragged on the magnets). Like a few of the others who have posted, I fixed the magnets in place using epoxy. There are photos showing how I held the wheels and magnets in place (I used a lot of round toothpicks, basically) in an article that will appear in the July 2013 CTT.

Thanks for reading CTT,

The MagneTraction magnets were staked in place and often were knocked loose in shipping.  They were easy to fix with some glue and plastic shims to center them while it dries.

Buckeye,

Installing tires would be a major project. If you prefer tires to Magne-Traction but want to keep your current GG1 shell, the simplest route would be to buy a chassis from a GG1 that has tires and mount your current shell on that.

Yes, the magnets are staked in place on most Lionel GG1s, but that's not the case on this particular locomotive, or at least not on examples I've seen. For these, Lionel used 2-sided tape to hold the magnets.

Thanks for reading CTT,

Terry

I have the same engine and both lights work.  I installed an Electric RR soundboard in it several years ago.  It isn't great, but it's better than nothing.  I don't know if they still sell the GG1 model.
