How can you beat steam? Steam engines just have character (the sound, the smoke); diesels seem to bland to me. Although I do enjoy electric engines. The larger the engine the better.

I still love the old sd40-2's. I have fond memories of being put in the hole for hours while waiting for opposing traffic to clear and eating lunch on those spacious porches. I always wondered why EMD made them that way but I'm glad they did. The steam era was over by the time I came along so I never really developed a great appreciation for them.

I really do love them all! Anything that runs on rails I'm a fan of! I do, however like steam a bit better than the others. First generation diesels and early electrics would come in a close second.

How can I choose? I've always been fascinated by Mallets, yet the first real steamer I ever saw was B&O's docksider when I was a kid in Baltimore. PRR's GG-1 flew past a playground just a couple of blocks from my home, and streetcars and trackless trolley buses still ran into the early sixties. And then, of course, there was the Lionel F-3 (in all those roadnames in the fifties). I'm sorry, I just can't do it! I really do "love them all".
