Tough call, this one. The guy at the trains shop says my taste is eclectic. If only he knew, my head swims given the variety of motive power out there. It's like, "do I want a Porter or a GS4? Budd RDC's or a Shay? A Lionel 381or a MTH Premier GG1? Brill trolley or RS3?"
When push comes to shove, if I was stuck on a desert island with an empty layout I'd want my E6 Atlantic for amusement.

F3's.. I must say I love everything which has flanged wheels, but the postwar F3's from Lionel are my favourite. Simply the whole 3 rail 0 gauge thing started with a pair of those giants for me.
Since then I'm hooked on the big chuffing and growling machines in 0 gauge..

American Standard 4-4-0 is my fav. But dang it... really haven't found a loco that I didn't like. Toy, real, steam, diesel... it don't matter.

Steam and early diesel, such as the F-7 A & B and for steam the mountain class.

More partial to diesels, but if the wheels have flanges, and it follows two rails spiked to wood ties, it's ok in my book!!!

I have to vote for the modern era diesels. I also enjoy being a rail fan as my work takes me around the midwest. Watching a string of 4 or 5 Dash 9's moving across the prairie with a line of double stacks is a thrill. However, I just spent a day chasing Union Pacific's #3985 Challenger across eastern Kansas and it was amazing to see this huge engine billowing smoke and steam into the winter sky. My goal of the month is to find one of the Lionel Challengers with that number and add it to my roster.

Since I operate on a 4 x 8 layout my favorite depends on what I'm in the mood for. If I just want to kick back and watch an engine pulling a string of cars then steam wins hands down. A diesel or electric just can't compete with the sound and mechanical activity of a steam engine.

But, if I'm in the mood to operate. Working the turn outs , making up strings of cars, making cuts of cars for the sidings then I choose a small diesel switcher. With the restricted space of a 4 x 8 layout I just find the work more satisfing with the smaller engine. Of course that may change when I get a 0-4-0 Docksider. [:D]

These machines symbolize the early American history, from the civil war up until the late 50's these wonderful machines lead the way in the way our country grew as a nation

The NYC HUDSON had a personality of its own. There is nothing in its class. Not one was saved so future generations could see the beauty and might that men could invent. Alas, we still have VHS videos and photos of this magnificent locomotive.

they're all GREAT! that is what makes our hobby one of the longest lasting hobbies there is. The choice to do anything any way you want in that world you are building. Steam tonight-first gen diesel last night-tomorrow pre-war tin.

The Lionel #675 is my favorite for its smooth running and stubby looks. It was my childhood engine and therefore is nostalgic. I must admit that it is a pain to disassemble. But it will always be number one in my book.

If it has a whistle instead of a horn, I like it better! I like steam first, both in model railroad life and in real life, but am starting to appreciate diesel more as time goes by. I particularly like streamline looks and am fond of early streamliner diesel, especially Santa Fe warbonnets, MoPac Eagles, Olypian Hiawathas, and Rock Island Line Rockets.

I, too like SD40's, as there is something about their blocky lines that work for aesthetic appeal, especially in old SP livery or UP livery.

My criteria:
#1. It runs
#2. I can afford it.
In real life STEAM.

I love Steam beacuse I used to watch and enjoy the New York (Empire) State Express (Hudson) when it came to the Syracuse station. I got to ride in the engine for about 30 Feet (maybe more), but being only 8, I can remember it. I walked with the oiler who checked/filled the journals and shoveled coal. What an engine. You do NOT see these day unless you goto a train museum. Also, had a chance to see the "Big-boy" on steam. Massive....

The N & W Class J has everything you want in an engine. Good looks and built for running! The EMD "E" and "F" units run a close second, what great looking engines. The railroads did a great job on those early paint schemes.

I like steam, because they where not running on the rails when I was growing up.
