Is asking a train to rise to a height of 6 in over about 4 and a half feet asking too much? If it is how far should I look to make a grade to rise to this height?

I think an 11% grade is just right, if you are modeling a cog railroad.  Big Smile [:D]

6/54 = 11.1%

I have a 3% grade on a straight track.  The non-traction wheeled engines have a difficult time with this grade.   To get a 3% grade and a rise 6", you will need about 16' 9" of track.
