Good evening Leon, wow a twenty yadr garbage container almost full to the brim outside of the shed.I see that the Mentor Hazmat folks are spraying down the contents as the boys dig deeper into the bowels of the shed. It almsot seems "TARDIS like" I think daboosman should tweet more often Thumbs Up [tup] Anyhow I think I'll haev a nice draft of keith's and I'll leave a couple bucks for our worhty shed cleaners so they can enjoy a round or two, once they've cleaned off and gotten out of their "white suits"

Fergie- Belated Happy B-Day [bday] greetings for you as well sir, sorry to ehar about your "job" but at least you had Pete's sence of humour to keep you company while you dug and dug and dug.... etc.

I'm feeling outnumbered I only have one CNR caboose Wink [;)] they do look great though, the Mike's also a beaut. I wonder what you may have to clean once Lisa discovers it though Shock [:O]Eight Ball [8]

Yup the first CLRV order was actually 1978-79 and the ALRV's are mid eighties builds, all haev ahd two or three complete rebuilds so it's almost time.Amazingly of the 300 CLRV's purchased 298 are still in service Thumbs Up [tup]

Pete- Make sure the Hazmat boys hose you guys off before you come back into the bar. remeber a couple pints are on me to ease your pain. I haven't got the DNA reports back from H&H yet so don't go skipping the country quite yetWhistling [:-^]Wink [;)]

Thanks for the link to the tyneside museum Thumbs Up [tup]

Do look at the Bachman site , I noticed tonight that they had all the painted examples pictures up. I could see you happily running the St Louis one. They do run well, had one over at Heather's dad's tonight and man does it creep almost tie to tie. the motor is mounted below the floor as well so it has an interior begging for people to be put in the seats.

Allan-It was a shame about Edmond Hillery, I'm glad to hear that he's getting the national recognition he deserves Thumbs Up [tup] I have a few more good shots of some diesel wierdies I'll see if I can't find a few more for you to enjoy,I have some neat traction oddballs as well. Street railway work equipment has always been shall we say unique.

Tom-Nice blast from the past on the Swiss railways Thumbs Up [tup] great to see some TEE equipment in it's native land.

By the way I haven't been able to get that Bathurst story to come up , not sure why a computer gremlin I'm assuming. A derailment Question [?]

Good morning Captain Tom and gentlemen!!

Leon, my friend, just a cheese burger please. No, i'll have a Tui!

Thank you all of you for all Birthday wishes! 65 means I am senior if I like it or not. But I like it even though I feel more like 27.

I think the Packers will win the Super Bowl this year! Yeah!! [yeah]Yeah!! [yeah]

Rob –  You are really bringing good news! I have to make it to Molly’s as soon as possible and see if the brunette is there! Smile [:)]

Interesting pictures of those diesels!Thumbs Up [tup] That Brill loks very much like the one below.

Brill Model-55 Combination Car

Did you see my Birthday cake? If not, here it is.

Mmmm!!!!

Thanks for part #3 of the Toronto Transportation Comission!Thumbs Up [tup] Very interesting!! Nine different systems controlled by four different companies must have been a mess.Sigh [sigh]

Tom –  Thank you for your very kind words! It is always interesting to learn about trains from a technical and historical point of view and if I, at the same time, can tell about things I know makes me feel even better.

So you think the brunette went to the Second Class Saloon? Hmm, I have info that she is at Molly’s. Smile [:)]

Two, for me unknown, movies that seem to be very good! Looking forward to see them!Smile [:)]

I don’t look a day older than what? Twentyseven? Confused [%-)]

Switzerland, a country for train freaks! You can go any place in Switzerland by train! Nice poster, Jura - Simplon Railway. The Simplon tunnel is something else, goes round and round in circles inside the mountain.Smile [:)]

Lars –  Thanks for the round!Thumbs Up [tup] Sometimes it is good to have a birthday and get a lot of stuff for free. Got a free desert at Cracker Barrel today.Yeah!! [yeah]

I am sorry to say that the end of the season for the Jints is coming soon!Oops [oops] They will play their last game against the Packers! Go Packers!!!Yeah!! [yeah]

Nice New York Central book covers! Would be interesting to read the Great Steel Fleet!

Ron –  Thank you for the Birthday wishes! I agree, it feels like the best part of life is about to start! You better take it easy and get your muscles and back in order. Smile [:)]

CM3 –  Thank you! Glad you like my little “thing” about the revenue service.Smile [:)]

Interesting reading about KCS and their Passenger service!Thumbs Up [tup]

Thank you for the medical alert! I had that Weary Overload Recreational Killer disease for years but feel much better nowadays.Wink [;)]

Mike –  Thanks for the Birthday wishes! I noticed that you called the train X2 and not X2000! That is correct, it is class X2.Yeah!! [yeah] There is no class X2000. X2000 is a service concept. But for some reason Amtrak introduced the train as X2000 during the time they leased it.

I have seen the picture you are posting before, but I can’t remember what the occasion was.  I just found part of the answer, the photo is from London Kings Cross station. Smile [:)]

DL –  Thank you for the link to Nene Valley Railway!Thumbs Up [tup] I found two Swedish locomotives, a class B and a class S.

Pete –  I had the 100,000th post!?!?Wow!! [wow] Bring the brunette! I am ready for the reunion! Thanks for the Birthday wishes! Sorry you got tweeted. Smile [:)]

Yes, the X2000 performed extremely well both during all tests and in revenue service!

The game really wasn't one of the best of the 4 over the weekend, but had the BEST conclusion as far as I'm concerned <after Green Bay, that is!> Still don't care for Eli - ‘n am not at all sorry that his big-bro is "out" for this run to the Super Bowl . . . <grin>

The idea of monthly celebrations for "Our" Place have gone by the boards - but it is disturbing that so few even recall the 12th as something ‘special' for us.

And I also noticed some (4) UTBs on-line over the weekend - guys who NEVER said good-bye (nor responded to Emails at the "end"), but surely were involved with us for many, many months - from B'day Bashes to all kinds of great submissions - then - gone-ZO. Won't bother listing ‘em - what's the point Question [?] THEY know who THEY are ‘n so do WE. Let's NOT bring this up again - DEAL Question [?] Getting really tiresome ‘n OLD. They are GONE ‘n we're BETTER off for it. ‘nuf said! Thumbs Down [tdn]

We have a fine nucleus of regulars ‘n the part-timers are doing a commendable job at helping us remain afloat. Long live "Our" Place as we march on to April 12th! Thumbs Up [tup] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Email received ‘n responded to - thanx!

Never get weary of those New York Central covers! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanx for the visit, chat ‘n round! Thumbs Up [tup]

As mentioned a few Pages ago - since we're in the Ether <cyber space> you, Sir, may imbibe in whatever you'd like with absolutely NO after or ill effects! So go fer it! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I think you're selling yourself short when you say you "don't have much to contribute," for what we have seen is top shelf ‘n it all isn't from Chile! Looking forward to MORE from our Southern Gentleman <aka: transplanted New Yorker!> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Round appreciated! Thumbs Up [tup]

G'day Gents!

With the "talk" of the Kansas City Southern, thought a nostalgia trip would be in order. Here's something to "whet the whistle!" <grin>

Now Arriving on Track Number One

Back in the Day

# Eleven - Kansas City Southern's Southern Belle

Caveat: All narrative, fotos & graphics from wikipedia.com with their authority. Material NOT corroborated.

Southern Belle (KCS)

The Southern Belle was a named passenger train service offered by Kansas City Southern Railway (KCS) from the 1940s through the 1960s, running between Kansas City, Missouri and New Orleans, Louisiana.

The service was inaugurated on September 2, 1940. To promote the new train, KCS held a beauty contest to find "Miss Southern Belle," a young woman whose image would be used in advertising materials systemwide. Local competitions were held before the train's launch in all of the cities that the KCS served. The ultimate winner of the competition, Margaret Landry Moore, was the winner of the local competition in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was selected as "Miss Southern Belle" at the final competition in New Orleans, Louisiana, on August 24, 1940.[1] She briefly became a screen actress, being most famous for her cameo as Teresa Guadalupe in The Leopard Man (1943).

Powered by an EMD E3 locomotive, Kansas City Southern Railway train No. 1, the Southern Belle, passes through Kansas City, Missouri on August 17, 1940. <Fair Use - Denver Public Library/Wikipedia.com>

Equipment used

Just before inauguration, Pullman-Standard delivered three new lightweight passenger car sets to the KCS for use on the Southern Belle. Each set consisted of a combination baggage-RPO-dormitory (car numbers 64, 65 and 66), a 74-seat coach chair car (cars 234, Pittsburg; 235, Joplin; and 236, Texarkana), and a dining-observation car (car numbers 54, Kansas City; 55, Shreveport; and 56, New Orleans).

The KCS rebuilt five heavyweight Pullman sleepers for use on the Southern Belle, making them look like their lightweight counterparts and increasing the number of double bedrooms in each. Cars Siloam Springs (formerly McBurney) and Sulphur Springs (formerly McLarty) were rebuilt in time for the train's inauguration. Initially, Pullman service was only offered between New Orleans and Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1941, car Barksdale (formerly McAllisterville) was added to the train's operation when Pullman service was extended from Shreveport to Kansas City. The first two rebuilt cars were joined a few months later by rebuilt cars State Capital (formerly McElheran) and Mena (formerly McKullo) on the southern leg of the train's schedule.

After World War II, the train was re-equipped with some new cars built in 1948 by American Car and Foundry

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  Cold here today and we got abt. 3 inches of "slight chance of flurries" just abt. the time I was ready to head for work.  "Game on" indeed!  Gas is holding at $3.19.

Mike was by with some good Johnny Podres photos.

DL visited with comments and Rob is continuing his informative notes on the TTC.

Pete was by with comments.

Fergie - Belated happy birthday to you!  BTW, nice set of CN cabs - you "done good."

Allan - I understand what you are saying, but you can never have too much antidote.  Kind of like the old story about why the guy drank so much.  He said, "I do it to keep the snakes away.  You don't see any around here, so it must work."

Pete - "Short" cars carry folks not riding for the full length of a run.  For example, say a train runs from Cincinnati to Washington, DC.  Some cars would carry passengers running from one terminal to another.  Passengers riding from Cincinnati to White Sulphur Springs, for example, would ride in a so-called "short" car since they were not making the entire trip.  IOW, it has nothing do with the length of the car.

Eric - Nice cake, chief!

OSP was by with Swiss and KCS material which ties in nicely with today's posting as we unravel the mystery of the "Flying Crow."

KCS 1950 Passenger Service - Part Two - "Flying Crow"

"Flying Crow," operations on the KCS also centered on Shreveport.  The southbound "Crow," train 5-15, departed Kansas City at 9:35 p.m. and arrived in Shreveport at 12:10 p.m. the next day.  Trains 5 and 15 split at Shreveport.

Train 15 left Shreveport at 1:40 p.m. and pulled into Port Arthur at 8:00 p.m. that evening. Train 15 carried chair cars from Kansas City to Port Arthur.  Train 5, operating to New Orleans, left Shreveport at 12:45 p.m. with an arrival at the Crescent City's Rampart St. Station nine hours later.  It carried chair cars from Kansas City to New Orleans.

The northbound "Flying Crow" carried train numbers 6-16.   Both trains converged on Shreveport, were combined, and ran together from there to Kansas City.

Train 16 departed Port Arthur at 10:30 a.m. with a 4:10 p.m. arrival in Shreveport. Train 6 left New Orleans at 7:45 a.m. and pulled into Shreveport at 4:25 p.m.

The combined "Crow," (now train 6-16) departed Shreveport at 5:00 p.m. with a 7:45 a.m. next morning arrival at Kansas City.  6-16 also carried the 14 roomette/4 double bedroom Shreveport-St. Louis Pullman as far as Texarkana where it was handed off to MP 32, the northbound "Sunshine Special."

Tomorrow we'll take a look at the "Southern Belle."

Work safe

hello Ruth , just a splashed coffee and a quick number three if you could. It smells very hopsitallike in here today , must be the residu from the Hazmat gang , I for one am glad that the spacesuits are gone it ws abit creepy last night. Mind you the shed is glowing and not because of some experiment Boris may be running either ,Nick never should have bought Boris that junior lab assistants kit.I don't know how many time I've seen him stooped over an infaltable that had all sorts of electrodes stuck to it, and  him mumbling something about it being alive right before it blows up . Shock [:O]Dead [xx(]

Tom-Hmm a tweet for being nice that doesn't seem right , oh well your dabossman. Thumbs Up [tup]

Just think of it you could have a nice streetcar runnning downtown and it wouldn't cause you as much greif or bending as the subway,I was just thinking about your back mate. Big Smile [:D]Whistling [:-^]

great info on KCS passenger trains and a couple nice photo's to boot Thumbs Up [tup] I have to say though that early KCS paint scheme is a tad loud , not as loud as some of the Seaboard or Atlantic Coast Line one's though however .

I hear you about sports playoffs top four or six only and get it over with. I wouldn't make amny friends in the sports business world that way though Oops [oops]

Eric-That is quite the cake, even if Tom does feel faint knowing theat H&H had ahand in it it doesn't look all that bad... on the surface.

And yes nine systems under four companies was a tad insane, no rate system ofr transfer system in common, one heck of a mess. By know means is the TTC perfect but at least you can travel multi-modal on the same fare schedual and transfer between them, drastic improvement.

Shane-great continuing info on theh KCS trains, I'm lookingforward to tomorrows installment Thumbs Up [tup]

Hello Tom and all in

Is it too late for some of the breakfast goodies - I hope not - those Bakery products always taste good and if there are any left I'd like to chose one or two! Fruit juice and coffee too please!

Tom - I've certainly got the date of the get together in my mind - thanks for reminding me - I'd liaise off line if it was a remote possibility. It would be hard for me to resist being in the same country at the same time and not making it! An interesting Amtrak ride could be factored in! I take your point on air fares - they'll get what they can won't they!

Rob - really enjoyed the TTC history articles (plus your other info), informative and interesting - as you know I'm a big fan of the TTC and it is good to learn more!

Allan - do you recall seeing the Silver Link loco and train in action back in the day? Or perhaps only in its post war guise. Sounds to me like you need to be planning a UK trip around the time of the anniversary of the 1938 record breaking runs! Seriously, do you ever get back to the ‘old country' - it's a lot easier said than done from your part of the globe I'd guess.

Talking of which - Pete - good to know you still plan a a visit - if we can do a mini ‘our place' rendezvous UK side as you suggest that would be great. A few pints at choice west midlands pubs (Holden's Mild...) combined with a west mids rover ticket or a Severn Valley trip - it's a date to clear the diary for in my view.

Turning to learning things - I'd heard of the Workington Steam shed but did not realise there was plan to move it to Loughborough - how much is that costing?

Amazing really that the shed has been lying more or less idle since 1968 - goes to show the state of the economy and land value in Workington I guess.

Anyway - there seems to be a web site dedicated to the plan

http://www.llwp.org.uk/index.asp

Looks like they have dismantled it and got it in store. The hard bit looks like preparing the earthworks and new site for it to be re erected on - along with the new canal bridge at Loughborough to provide access.

But the most recent update is May 07 - it does make a great read though:

http://www.llwp.org.uk/articles.asp?articleID=1

What also is interesting are these memories of staff - short pieces and again worth a read - I'm sure others will enjoy these too:

http://www.llwp.org.uk/people.asp

I see posts from Tom, CM3 and Rob since I prepared this on my WP so I'll peruse them now

Good wishes to all

Hi Tom and all.

A pint of Holden's Golden Glow please RUTHThumbs Up [tup].

ROB Those pints were very welcome after Fergie and I had cleaned out the shedApprove [^]. Its looking pretty good nowYeah!! [yeah] but we will have to keep SPIKE away from BORIS'S toysShock [:O], I think he was tipped off about our cleaning, as he had hidden is Junior Lab Assistant's SetWhistling [:-^]Big Smile [:D]

That is a good museum in North TynesideApprove [^] I am sure Allan will know the area wellYeah!! [yeah]. I had a look at the Bachmann web siteThumbs Up [tup]; those look great models of the Witt streetcarsApprove [^]. I noticed on the St Louis one it had ‘UR' on the side, did this stand for Urban Railroad do you knowQuestion [?]. It would really add to the models if they did have passengers on boardYeah!! [yeah].

ERIC Yes I would like to see the Packers win the Superbowl crown this yearApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup].

I did not know about the X2000 was in fact a class X2. It is all the more surprising Amtrak did not order the X2s considering how well it performedConfused [%-)], I believe there has been problems with the Acelas causing their withdrawal from service for a time fairly recentlySad [:(].

Great looking 'Birthday Cake'Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]

With the Brunette going over to the Second Class Saloon Shock [:O]it should make for an interesting Darts Contest this year.Whistling [:-^]Big Smile [:D]

CM3 Many thanks for the details on the KCS Flying CrowApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup].

Thanks for the explanation on the ‘short cars'.Thumbs Up [tup] It has made me think about if, in the 1950s, the named trains were reservation only like today's Amtrak. If they were they could have filled up the seats of the short car for different stages of the journey or was it turn up and hope for a seatQuestion [?].

DL It would be great if it was at all possible you could join us in St LouisYeah!! [yeah]Thumbs Up [tup]. I am sure we be able to draw up a great itinerary for some Holden's pubs in the West MidlandsApprove [^], perhaps a visit to the Beacon Hotel in Sedgley for some Sarah Hughes Ruby MildApprove [^], there is a Holden pub just up the road from the Beacon and great sandwich shop by the bus stopThumbs Up [tup].

Many thanks for the links to the Workington Shed ProjectApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup], I will have to look out in the railway magazines for any more news. No doubt it will cost a lot of money but what an attraction for the GCR it would be,Wow!! [wow] in between trains at Loughbourough a DMU trip to the shed would be great.Approve [^]

The memories of the staff  as you say are well worth readingThumbs Up [tup] although very sad, as the shed and the work ran downSad [:(]. I noticed in the first memory, the gentleman served at Rugby Shed for a whileYeah!! [yeah]. It would be great to know what the Workington drivers thought of those Metro-Vick Co-Bos diesels I see there was a couple of them in the photos. Thanks for sharingApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup].

TOM Easy quiz for youYeah!! [yeah] which British band sang Ruby ‘Chewsday'Question [?]Big Smile [:D]. I am sure you will be pleased with the job Fergie and I have done in cleaning the ‘Shed',Thumbs Up [tup] how long it will last that clean is anybody's guessSigh [sigh].

What a great web site you found in your reply to MikeWow!! [wow]Yeah!! [yeah]. Those photos are simply magic and rare showing A4 s in LNER and BR daysApprove [^]. The photo of No 22 Mallard is taken during the 1948 Locomotive Exchanges I believe; there is a Dynamometer Car behind the tender. Like the picture of the A4 No 60010, we saw at ExpoRail, in steam. A couple of things I noticed in the

Good evening Leon, just a pint or two of guiness for me this evening thank-you.

Pete-I'm glad that you survived the job ,Boris seems a bit apprehensive at his new clean digs he keeps muttering about the clean smells which are offending his nose Alien [alien] I'm sure that inside the week it will be back to it's normal cesspool like condition .

Interesting photo's today I like the little US government plymouth industrial switcher , imagine a locomotive that is dwarfed by a caboose.I'm not sure what the UR means, maybe Chris will know and be able to answer that question when he gets back in.You could put people in the interior theer are moded seats inside and the roof lifts off to gain access to the interior. Once I get mine painted I'm planning on putting some people inside.

Dan-I'm glad that you enjoyed the TTC stuff.Over time I'm going to redo alot of teh traction posts I made on the other thread. as they say Rome wasn't built in a day. if you do get to Toronto again let me know ahead and we'll meet up, I can't have someone riding the Rocket by themeselves. Some intersting urls I need to strudy them a bit deeper Thumbs Up [tup]

Good morning Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Leon, I'll have Steak & Bisquits, please. Cooked my way. Don't forget to add a lot of extra marinade! Cold Keith's, please!

I am getting used to not having to go to work in the morning in no time at all! I should have done this a long time ago.

Tom –  Congratulations to your 7,500th post!!!

X2000 service concept means basically that the ticket price includes a meal that will be served at your seat.Smile [:)] Just like the airlines used to do and still do over the Atlantic. On domestic flights you will hardly get even a tiny bag of peanuts any more. Grumpy [|(]

I think the Packers will give the Patriots their first loss this season in the Super Bowl!!! Yeah!! [yeah]

Thanks for the Kansas City Southern article!Thumbs Up [tup] Very interesting! I like their paint scheme!
I bet that diesel is operational, otherwise they would not have installed ditch lights on it. I guess I have to stop at Kansas City Union Station this year when I am leaving the Rendezvous!

CM3 –  Too bad you never had a chance to taste that cake!Wink [;)]

Thanks for part two of KCS 1950 Passenger Service - “Flying Crow”. My favorite KCS train!Thumbs Up [tup]

Rob –  I wuld say that H&H did a perfect job with that cake!Wow!! [wow] Very good indeed! To look at anyway.Wink [;)]

DL –  It would be great if you could make it to Our Place 3rd Annual Rendezvous in May!!! It is only 120 days away!Sign - Welcome [#welcome]

Pete –  Amtrak’s former President D. Gunn officially said a number of times that Amtrak made a mistake not ordering their version of the X2000 (X2). Amtrak has had a lot of problems with Acela. Which is what you can expect when you buy a train that does not exist and get it delivered within a few years.Sigh [sigh]

I have to pay a visit to the Second Class Saloon and see if I can find the brunette!Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Nice photos from the Museum of Transportation, but kind of sad to see the snow on the locomotives.Disapprove [V] It makes those locomotives look like they are something left behind.

Wednesday's Witticism

There's always someone to take the slack out of a troublemaker's rope.

G'day Gents!

Mid-week in mid-month in mid-continent ‘n after a chilly start yesterday ‘n today, it's supposed to warm up a bit <over freezing (F)> then drop back with some very light snow predicted.

That smell is our freshly ground ‘n brewed special blend coffee along with the delivery of pastries from The Mentor Village Bakery. <ummmmmm> While enjoying the start to the day, why not add a <light> or <traditional> breakfast to your bill o' fare Question [?] Thumbs Up [tup]

We're due for about an inch of white stuff later on tonite ‘n into the ‘morrow . . . Surely isn't the wintertime that I remember. Getting really discouraged with this lousy change in climate ‘round here. Summers are as oppressive as a blast furnace, winters hardly a shadow of what they had been - swings in temps that remind me of an old cranky . . . oh never mind! <grin>

Quarters, round ‘n visit much appreciated! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

I've reviewed all of my fotos ‘n had she been on display, I surely wudda captured the image! Anyway, thanx for it, I've added her to my archives. Thumbs Up [tup]

Really need to make sure that the guyz ‘round here get the "benefit" of those fotos that you provide over there . . . much more receptiveness amongst our crew, dontchathink Question [?]

CPR 4-4-4 #2928 at ExpoRail, Saint-Constant, Québec, Canada <trolleyboy Rob foto>

This "Jubilee" light-locomotive was designed by Bowen and built by Canadian Locomotive Company (CLC) for service on secondary lines. The wheel arrangement was specific to the CPR in Canada and was developed to replace the older, small locomotives used on those lines.

And you shouldn't complain about NOT getting <tweeted>! <geesh> As we used to say "back in the day," - "I'll give you something to complain about, if . . . . " <uh oh>

It will be interesting to see if the other half of our Canadian Connections picks up on being <tweeted>. Last time it was weeks, with several reminders, before he caught on. Bad, bad habits ingrained from those hit ‘n run joints, methinks. <barf>

Thanx for the mid-day Post! Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 169 - Dan (DL-UK) at 12:05 PM: Never too late for pastries from The Mentor Village Bakery - especially since we now have our very own DoNut MoSheen! <grin>

Don't mean to "press" you regarding "offline comms" - just that there are certain private matters that shouldn't be put into the Ether for unrestricted viewing (home phone numbers - addresses ‘n the like). I'm sure you understand . . . We'll work something out should you find that a visit to mid-continent USA for Rendezvous III turns to reality! Yeah!! [yeah]

It's gratifying to see that you've been able to stop by in mid-day <US CST> - it's a "slot" that has been "hurting" for awhile . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

All the talk of pub visiting in the UK with Pete - how about a ROUND right here Question [?] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] By the by, any refererence to "Our" Place for a Rendezvous - mini or full-fledged, MUST be endorsed by said Proprietor - that's MOI! So, if I'm not included - say no more <wink, wink> <nudge, nudge>! <uh oh>

Thanks for the visit ‘n chat ‘n most interesting links to eavesdrop in on! Thumbs Up [tup] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  Nice and cold here today (approx +4 degrees) and clear.  The K9 Korps was out at 6 a.m. today "defending the perimeter" against all enemies foreign and domestic.  Gas is holding at $3.19.

Rob and DL were by with observations and comments.

Pete also visited with comments - glad I was able to answer your question re "shorts."

Eric - Excellent picture of C&IM locomotive.  C&IM has always been one of my "more favorite" roads - why not, it carried coal!

OSP was by with comments and observations as well.  "Taking slack?"  Lord, some days I feel as if I am "pushing on the rope" trying to get stuff done.  Anyway, point taken!  BTW, heard that another "old-time" ballplayer pass away - Don Cardwell.  I remember yrs ago always seeming to get him or Herb Plews in packs of Topps cards.  Yes, Spike he played for the "original" Washington Senators.

Here is the next installment of KCS passenger material.  For those who did not look at OSP's recent KCS post, check it out as it explains a lot about which cars were used on the "Southern Belle."  Today's installment will tell you where they ran.

Kansas City Southern Passenger Service in 1950 - Part Three "Southern Belle"

The "Southern Belle," trains 1-101 and 2-102 were the pride of the railroad.  Again, everything happened at Shreveport.

The "Belle" carried chair cars between Kansas City and New Orleans and Kansas City and Port Arthur.  Diners operated between Kansas City and both end points and a tavern lounge observation between Kansas City and New Orleans.  A pair of 14 roomette/4 double bedroom Pullmans ran on the "Belle," also between Kansas City and both end points.

The southbound "Belle," train 1-101, had a 4:00 p.m.  departure from Kansas City.  It arrived in Shreveport at 3:00 a.m. where it split.  Train 1 left Shreveport at 3:15 a.m. en route to New Orleans where it arrived at 10:00 a.m.  Train 101 left Shreveport at 3:30 a.m. reaching Port Arthur at 9:00 a.m.

Northbound, the "Belle" left Port Arthur at 4:20 p.m. as train 102.  Train 2 departed New Orleans at 4:00 p.m.  Train 102 was in Shreveport at 10:20 p.m. and train 2 arrived about 25 minutes later.  Combined, train 102-2 departed Shreveport at 11:00 p.m. and was in Kansas City the next morning at 10 o'clock.

Work safe

P.S.  There is one more short item to go on KCS which deals with their unnamed trains 9 and 10.  Then I plan to return to New England-Canada service.  Awhile back we got everybody out of North Station.  I figure that it's about time to get ‘em back home.

Ahoy Cap'n Tom ‘n fellow travelers at the bar!

Ruth my deAH, a mid week <and mid month!> visit from the Larsman, alive ‘n well in the Florida keys. <grin> I've "heard" things are rather chilly in parts NORTH! <ha ha ha ha ha ha> Ooooooooops, sorry ‘bout that! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Boris, I see you've been taking good care of our crittAHs - but you MUST remember to keep them away from the top floor AND the Penthouse Suite. No, no, no - baaaaaaaaad Cyclops! <frown> Now, go ahead ‘n feed the gang ‘n help yourself to that LARGE jar of PPF! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

A round for the gang ‘n I'll take a number three from the menu board along with a steaming hot mugga Joe with a double jolt if you please! Yeah!! [yeah]

I'm VERY excited about this Sunday's game up in Green Bay. Don't envy any of those fans who will be sitting in that outdoor stadium, freezing their stern sections off. <yikes> I'll bet we'll see more than a few who go "shirtless" and all painted up ‘n full o' beer! <double yikes>. Takes all kinds, huh Question [?]

Speaking of . . . WHY do we have to see that Censored [censored] thread on top of our forum's "topic" page day after day after day Question [?] I mean why can't that "thing" be put up where it belongs in the "Annoucements & FAQ" area at the very top of the forum page????? And WHO is this guy "selector" anyway???? What happened to "good old Bergie?????" Actually, I don't wanna know. <grin> Just sorta ticks me off about these guys who can't figure out one forum from another and then because of them, the rest of us have to "live with" that Censored [censored] "thing" that never moves down the page. <gripe> <moan> <groan>

Today is the optional day for toys & models ‘round here. Sorry, but I'm fresh out of that kinda thing ‘n will just have to draw a bye . . . perhaps we should just let this go the way of so many other things at the bar. For example: We don't recognize the 12th as anything special any more - we don't have B'day Bashes - we don't have the Order of the Stools - and so on. So why not just let it go ‘n move on with what we DO the best Question [?] That happens to be providing some GREAT material for the serious amongst us to ENJOY! Thumbs Up [tup] Just a thought . . . .

Would like to acknowledge Shane - Pete - Eric - Fergie - Mike - Allan - and Dan for keeping things going ‘round here since my last visit! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Oh yeah, a belated Happy B-Day [bday] to Fergie - who most probably will nevAH read this! <groan> <grin>

Hey Cap'n Tom! What's the deal with Rolen to the Blue Jays Question [?] I know he had major problems in Philadelphia with Larry Bowa <manager> but then we began reading about similar "issues" with Tony LaRussa. I thought LaRussa was one of those "touchy feely" guys - and not combative the way Bowa can be. Anyway, so another Prima Donna gets his way, huh Question [?] I will say this though - Rolen is one heck of a 3rd baseman, haven't seen too many bettAH at that sack than he. A shame he has problems with understand what "boss" means . . . Maybe he isn't getting PAID enough, huh Question [?] The Cardinals may just have pulled off a winnAH in getting Glaus - he's a "gudun"! Thumbs Up [tup]

Wasn't that sad about Johnny Podres Question [?] You said it best about the passing of another of our Boys of SummAH! <sad> Nice tribute from Mike . . . and to Shane for alerting us!

Keep on keeping on with the great material you've been coming up with! With 7,500 <plus> posts on these forums, my guess is you've got far MORE quality than most will evAH have. Anyway, the Switzerland ad, KCS 'n the Saturday material is all top shelf, mate! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Ok, ok - I got the message <finally> with the "remindAHs" of those used-to-be guys. Just ticks me off to see ‘em out ‘n about as if we don't have any feelings in the mattAH. <geesh> But ok - I'll TRY to control my runaway thoughts . . . <screw ‘em> <grin>

Hey Eric! There's a great song by Hall & Oates called "She's Gone!" Get it!?!?!? I wouldn't mess around with the boyz ovAH at the 2nd Class Saloon. Maybe she'll "surface" once she realizes how much you CARE! <ha> I mean <yeah>.

Great looking B'day cake ‘n as Da Bossman said, WHERE do you find ROOM for anything else - especially that "food" from the CrackAH Barrel! <geesh> No wondAH you need a gall bladdAH operation. Bet it's full o' crackAHs ‘n cheese! <grin>

Whaddyamean you hope Green Bay wins the Super Bowl!?!?! They haven't gotten to that point YET. Gotta get past my JINTS! <geesh>

Hello Tom and all in

Looks like I'm posting striaght after Lars and CM3 - busy at the bar then!

I'll try some of those Do-Nuts and a coffee please, and I'll leave a round for the house - as Tom mentions it. Bit early in the day at the moment for me but I'm sure folk will enjoy it later.

Tom - I'd missed that A4 Yorkshire History link - Pete's remarks made me go back to it - some nice period pictures and nice to see the loco lists with full name listings beside them.

That Dome site is a good one too - one for Lars I have no doubt!!

In terms of detailed linkages I fully understand (and endorse) the off site comms approach - you have my details of course and will no doubt copy me in, even though a visit is a slim chance! As for a mini rendezvous I felt we could mention it (Pete and me) since you will be there in spirit if we are in a bar talking trains! No doubt about that and I'm sure Pete will agree! Would have been larger if Nick in West Wales was still with us although he seems to be L of L nowadays.

Pete - I've dug out the pics of Silver Princess (it was June 1963 Modern Railways - so I'll e-mail the Backtrack editor with that info and transcribe the text in case he is interested). No doubt the Dec Backtrack is out of stock now so of course I won't know much about the original article.

Sounds like you have a good list of West Mids pubs easy to hand so you had better get looking for a good value flight!

Rob - yes, if I'm in Toronto again I'll be in touch. Having made 3 Canadian trips within 12 months in 2006/07 I'm not planning another trip for awhile, but Toronto is a great place and I have no doubt I'll be back in due course. Maybe they will get the TTC link to the airport constructed!

Cheerio all

DL

Posted by siberianmo on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 2:00 PM

G'day Gents!

A decent start to our day at the bar with support from CM3 Shane - Lars 'n Dan! Thumbs Up [tup]

Something for our OP-SHUN-UL Toy 'n Model Trains Day here at the bar . . . that's why we keep it going, Larsman - it's OP-SHUN-UL! <geesh> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Let's just call these fotos "It's my railroad 'n I'll view 'em if I want to . . . ." <Lesley Gore did NOT sing that!>

Mountain right-of-way on the Can-Am Railway . . . that's Mt. Mentor in background!

This is the route of BC Rail 'n VIA Rail RDCs <2 cars per consist> from Mountain Village to Mountain Depot - a point to point operation along a circuitous run from end-to-end of the hi-ground portion of the layout.

Double track main lines looking northward on the west side of Mt. Mentor.

Just love this view . . . reminds me of many a trip in Canada.

<don't know how I wound up with this hue, but it really enhances the wintry look!>

Boris' friends near Can-Am Gorge

Living in a winter wonderland!

Good afternoon Ruth, your all smiles this afternoon I wonder why Blush [:I] Anyway I think I'll have a splashed coffee and oh what the heck a small bag donuts from the mosheen ! Oh dear I see that Boris is now using spike as a donut caddy Sigh [sigh] well as long as the donuts are on his spines they won't end up ouch on myCensored [censored] seat.Angry [:(!] I'll leave a bit extra to supply the gang this afternoon as well.

Tom-Last I heard the 4-4-4 was ( is ) undergoing so cosmetic care . It had been an outside exhibit for about 25 years, I imagine it will be refreshed and remounted this summer.Help yourself to the photo my pleasure Thumbs Up [tup]

We were supposed to get a coupel inches today as well but the temps are hovering around the plus side so "lawd only knows"On the upside I don't have to shovel itBig Smile [:D] No Boris I wasn't talking about your shed <sheesh>

I haven'e seen Fergie out and about  (aboot )today perhaps he will; come in and remember why he has all that filth under his fingernails <uh oh > Or maybe Lisa found out about the Mike and he's run for the ship Shock [:O]Eight Ball [8]Black Eye [B)]

Great look at the CanAm again sir , your a credit to the hobby 5xThumbs Up [tup]

Lars-Me burn out "nevah" Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] I'm pacing myself , gotta try to fill your shoes, No Boris Vito isn't mad at Lars Sigh [sigh] Ruth could you maybe get Boris into the kitchen to do dishes he's more dopey than usual today.

I won't even take the bet that there will be a bunch o buffoons in their "gitch" and paint on the weekend ,hopefully nothing important gets frostbitten Shock [:O]Dead [xx(]

Selector is one of the member moderators that Bergie uses them as a posse to keep the corals quiet, for the most part they are doing their thing, glad it's them and not me. At least he has started moveing some of the model bits over to the appropriate spots.

I good selection of books a bit theer for everyone I would think Thumbs Up [tup]thanks for the round BTW !

Dan-I think you should get an appartment over here Big Smile [:D] No preassure just letting you know that the invitation is there.Thumbs Up [tup]Don't hold your breath on the airport Link the prov gov is still dragging their feet on the environmental impact study. I think they will drag it out even longer now as last week the Federal tarnsportaion minister was in Toronto and wondered aloud and publicly why the link wasn't there. He suggested that it was an embarrasment  ( and is )that such a large seemingly world class city was without a rail link to it's main airport. Certain stuff hit the fan as a result. Banged Head [banghead] I do hate all things political.

Shane-more great passenger info thanks for sharing sir 5xThumbs Up [tup] for your efforts the last few days. Great stuff.

Lets see Hi again Ruth another splashed coffee if you don't mind, I have a bit of a chill comming on seeing those wonderfull wintery vista's on the bossmans wonderfull layout Thumbs Up [tup]A round for da big guy when he comes back in on me as well.

Well since it's optional toy and train day here's a bit 'o' stuff to leep her moving on.Some shots of the recently aquired Peter Witt streetcar.

It's optional decoder for those who are of the DCC vein, it has a dummy plug for those like me who blissfully stay ignorant of DCC. Thumbs Up [tup]

A shot of teh circut board and how it's hidden inside the roof which is removable for servicing etc. Roof is leaning against the car.

A shot of the interior, the motor and flywheels are below the floorboards small but powerfull the car runs smoothly and quietly almost creeps tie to tie out of the box !

Just a general shot with the roof on.

Enjoy

Hi there Leon , I see alls quiet by the bar by the ballast, so I'll just get a quick Keith's while I re-load the donut mosheen with more batter and lard. Here'a a couple bits of NS&T ( Niagara St Catharines & Toronto RR ) photo's that have been posted at Tom's photo thread the last couple of days.

A shot of an NS&T car bringing in the next shift at the Port Weller dry docks. Picture shows the car waiting for the canal bridge to lower.

A 1958 shot of interurban car 620 running a charter on the old city line in St Catharines. The cars upbound on Geneva Street and will turn right onto St Paul ( something you can no longer do as St Paul is now one way in the other direction ) the car will pass in front of Niagara Central Hobbies just after it turns onto St Paul street. On an interesting sidenote the NS&T track was finally ug up and removed on Geneva and St Paul about two years ago. I remember the Hobby shop selling small chunks of it as paper weights.

enjoy

Hi Tom and all.

A pint of Winter Ale please RUTH.Thumbs Up [tup]

ROB I believe BORIS is already planning a "Lets get the shed back to normal" party with the MascotsShock [:O]. I blame Manager Lars for increasing his daily ration from a small jar of Pickled Pig's Feet to a large one.Yeah!! [yeah]Big Smile [:D]

USA #7765 is a small locomotive. The guidebook says it was built in 1943 and is 150HP.

Many thanks for the photos of your new Peter Witt StreetcarThumbs Up [tup]. I noticed the seats we talked about, it is a fine looking model.Approve [^]Yeah!! [yeah]

Enjoyed the photos of the NS&TThumbs Up [tup], interesting shot of the canal bridge in the raised position and car 620 looks good after the rainApprove [^]. Thanks for sharing.Thumbs Up [tup]

ERICBow [bow] Well done noticing Tom's 7,500th post I had missed it.

If you do go to the Second Class SaloonShock [:O] go in disguise and take BORIS and LEON with you, they are still very upset about their loss in the Dart's ContestAngry [:(!]. Great photo of C&IM # 551.Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]

CM3 Many thanks for the KCS Southern BelleThumbs Up [tup] I have re-read Toms post and it is good to know the timings of the Belle.Yeah!! [yeah] I noticed there was a lot less time in Shreveport with the Southern Belles than the Flying Crow.

LARS I still wonder why the critters wanted to get into the Penthouse Suite so badlyConfused [%-)], see I have a weekend away and they run amokShock [:O]. I don't think BORIS would still be getting the large PPF jar if you knew what I found while cleaning his shedWhistling [:-^], but since my promotion I am going to be aAngel [angel]. There surely can't be a worse ‘Penalty' than cleaning BORIS's shed after one of his ‘Friends' exploded Shock [:O]unless it is putting my Bathams through a coolerShock [:O]Shock [:O]Shock [:O].  .

Perhaps an Our Place wager on the Giants V the PackersQuestion [?] as you say it should be a great game. Yeah!! [yeah]

DL If you E-mail the editor of Backtrack it may be worth asking if there are any copies of the December issue left, another good place is in the second hand magazines at preserved lines.Thumbs Up [tup]

Does that 63 issue of MR say in what train the Silver Princess was in at the timeQuestion [?]. The article did say that when the car was modified in 1956 it was one of the first cars in maroon where as the other cars at the time were in the carmine and cream livery.

Hi Tom and all,

Hi again Leon, the same old round of Tui`s for all the crew please!Yeah!! [yeah]

Pete. That Stephenson Railway Museum at Chirton, not far from Wallsend the old home town, is in an area we used to explore the old dis-used coal wagonway`s as kids, collected a lot of coal droppings there in the big snow of the winter of 1947, you really brought back such a lot of memories of my youth!Sigh [sigh] When we left the old country in 1969 they were thinking about having the museum in the North Tyneside area. I would have loved to have seen Bittern done up as Silver Link!Sigh [sigh] Am looking forward to all those pics you, the Alan`s, and Dan will have to share later on. Wish I could make the trip, and I will try hard not to get VERY jealous about it!Wink [;)] Enjoyed all your posts and pics, thanks.Wow!! [wow]Thumbs Up [tup]

Rob. Looking forward to the next lot of pics of the diesel oddities, some nice shots of your DCC installation in your model trolleys, some very neat work!Wow!! [wow] That museum that Pete mentioned is in an area we used to explore as kids, an area of old dis-used coal wagonway`s, in the big snow of the 1947 winter used to seach for coal droppings there, Pete certainly brought back some real old memories of those day`s.Sigh [sigh]Thumbs Up [tup]

Eric. Good to see you enjoyed your birthday so much, that`s a whopper of a birthday cake you posted. Enjoyed those pics.Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

CM3. All the Tui`s on top of the retirement should make me TOTALLY immune to the WORK virus, we have no snakes in New Zealand so the Tui`s must be working too!Whistling [:-^] Enjoyed your KCS passenger train write up`s on the "Flying Crow" and the "Southern Belle"Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Dan. Unfortunately I will not be able to make the trip over to see such an historic occasionSigh [sigh] just can`t fit it in, but am looking forward to all the pics you all will be taking then. I`m trying very hard not to be jealous of you all.Wink [;)] Did not see Silver Link in it`s original livery, the Silver Jubilee coaches I saw at Manors station in 1948 were in their original colour though, saw Silver Link in it`s wartime black scheme and then in it`s BR green later on. Thanks for those Top Shed links, a very interesting site.Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Lars. Great to see another fine collection of covAHS from the Larsman Mobile, hope you are soaking up all that sun at the Key`s.Yeah!! [yeah]Thumbs Up [tup]

Tom. That short word "if" has such a lot of big outcomes looking back at ones life, but you never know do you?Wink [;)] Congratulations on making the 7,500th post, what sort of prize is Boris going to give you?Confused [%-)] Enjoyed your write up and pics of the KCS "Southern Belle" it fitted in very well with Shane`s informative info about it. Nice pic of CPR #2928. That`s a good link to the A4`s at that Yorkshire history site, it`s now on my favourites list!Approve [^] Nice crop of shots of your CAN AM RR. By the sounds of it you are maybe going to get some SNOW at last!Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Good evening Leon,I see that you have had some company this afternoon which is of coarse a good thing for the cash registers. Thumbs Up [tup] I think i'll go with a guiness tonight a I'll leave a bit extra for a round for the track gangs that are having at it over by the pool tables. I see that Boris and the "air corps " have it all under carefull watch. Looks like spike is making himself usefull as a boot cleaner as well Thumbs Up [tup]

Pete-A couple fine shots today. I always cringe when I see a trolley cars that's been converted to gas power, kind of defeats the purpose.loved the model pics as well, a fine rounding out of today's model and hobby day.

Interesting to read your comments on the Acela. I had thought that they were a direct purchase resulting from the x2000 tests, and where Americanized copies. You learn something new every day.

Allan-I'm glad that you liked the witt shots. I have to confess though ,no work there is really mine other than snapping the bits together.  The wiring done, you just have to line up the pin conectors on which ever set up you wish. The dummy plug for DC or the decoder if you want to run DCC

That museum sight sounds interesting,I hope you kept a couple lumps of that coal for posterity.

Hi Tom and all.

I was just passing the bar when I saw Allan and Rob in Approve [^]so a Tui, Keith's and a Bathams please LEON.Thumbs Up [tup]

ALLAN I though that link to the Stephenson Railway Museum might bring back memories for you.Thumbs Up [tup] Many thanks for sharing them with usThumbs Up [tup]. I was too young for the bad winter of 1947 but I remember the big freeze of 1963 when the canal at the back of my old house was frozen and you could walk along it to Rugby and of course there was a lot of steam about then stillApprove [^].

I thought I would look up in my old notes about the day I visited the museum and that brought back some fond memoriesYeah!! [yeah], luckily it was the first notebook I picked up, I will have to look to see if I can find the photo album. It was on October 4th 1991 that Alan and went by car to Whitby calling at the Darlington Railway Museum then the Timothy Hackworth museum and Soho engine shed in Shildon Co. Durham.

On the Saturday it was the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Gala and we had trips behind.

The Sunday is when we went to the Stephenson Railway Museum and saw Bittern as Silver Link, We also had two trips on the preserved line from the museum to Percy Main one was hauled by PECKETT 0-6-0 saddle tank Works number 1970 and the other by BAGNELL 0-6-0 ST Works No 2994 this loco was named ‘Thomas Burt MP'

Next we moved south of the TYNE to the Tanfield Railway where we had a trip from Andrews House to visit the famous Causey Arch bridge, before heading to the other end of the line at Sunniside, then back to Andrews House. We were hauled by ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORN Works No 7298 named Progress. After seeing the fine collection of industrial locomotives there it was back to Grosmont.

On the Monday before heading home we had time to travel on the NYMR from Grosmont to Pickering and back behind No 80135. On the way home we called to view the site of the Sheep Pasture Incline on the former Cromford and High Peak Railway.

It really was a great weekend and I am really glad your post inspired me to look it upThumbs Up [tup]. Our Place really is a great place.Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]Yeah!! [yeah]

I will be sure to post my photos from the England trip and wish you could have joined usYeah!! [yeah].

I never knew that there weren't any snakes in New ZealandWow!! [wow], my kind of place.Approve [^]

Just heard that Kevin Keegan is taking over as manager of the TOON (again). After a terrible game against Manchester United at the weekend losing to SIX second-half goalsShock [:O]Sad [:(] they have come back tonight to win 4-1 against Stoke city in the Cup.Thumbs Up [tup]

Better stop now before I get ‘Tweeted' for too much football.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

ROB Glad you enjoyed the photosThumbs Up [tup]. Yes I feel sad when a preserved item as been radically altered from what is once was after being saved.Thumbs Down [tdn] It is a very fine point at the moment with the National Museum in the UK with locomotives that are run on the main line with one engine needing a new cylinder block if it is to run again.

I don't know if the reason for choosing the Acela over the X2000 has ever been told. But as Eric said the X2000 performed extremely well on the trains and revenue earning runs it done over here, I am stillConfused [%-)] why it was not chosen.

Oops [oops]Looks as though I have got excited with my post tonightWhistling [:-^], as it is getting quite long,Yeah!! [yeah] I hope you enjoy the reminiscences. By the way the beer was Sam Smiths in Whitby and Strongarm in the pub in Grosmont.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Another round please LEON and first drinks on me tomorrowThumbs Up [tup].

Pete.

Good morning Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Leon, you are still awake? Yes, a sugar cured ham sandwich would be great! On rye bread! Tui, please!

A brief stop to eat my sandwich and check who visited Our Place this Wednesday.

Tom –  You mentioned Plymouth switcher, I know I have shown this one before but it is time for a rerun!

Greenfield Village, Dearborn, MI.

Peanuts or pretzels, I can live without them.Wink [;)] At least I want a cup of coffee and a sandwich., sub or something, when I fly.

I think you are doing an extremely good job making your posts meaningful.Yeah!! [yeah] Except when you are downgrading the brunette! I’ll find her. Grumpy [|(]

Very nice views from the Can-Am Railway, but a little bit too much snow. Here is a part of the same line closer to the equator. Smile [:)]

No snow!!!

Snow.

CM3 –  Glad you liked the photo.Smile [:)] It is a good looking locomotive, that’s why I took that photo. I know hardly anything at all about C&IM. Maybe you can give us a short story when you feel like it?Question [?]

Shreveport must have been a very important connecting point for KCS for most of their trains. Thanks for the info!Thumbs Up [tup]

Lars –  The Order of the Stools? That was before I got involved. What was that?Question [?]

She’s gone? Don’t worry, I’ll find her!!!Mischief [:-,]

Maybe here!

I am a very regular Cracker Barrel customer! I have been to “my” CB 2,461 times (yes I am counting) now, since they opened 10 years ago (on Saturday). I am so regular so I was featured on their website for a couple of years. Smile [:)]

Green Bay will rub the faces of the Jints in the snow this weekend! Sorry, but that’s how it is (will be).Mischief [:-,]

Very interesting books (covers)!Thumbs Up [tup] Rails Across Boston is my pick! What is making Springfield Massachusetts such a Railroad City?Question [?]

DL –  Thanks for the round!Thumbs Up [tup]

Rob –  Very good looking Peter Witt streetcar!Thumbs Up [tup] Are you going to paint it yourself? Hope we will se a photo of it when it is done!

Nice photos of the NS&T!Thumbs Up [tup] I guess NS&T is no more, just a memory. Did you buy any paper weight?Question [?]

Pete –  I would say the biggest reason Amtrak bought Acela was the Canadian Government! They offered a generous package of loans worth more than $600 million to help Amtrak buy the trains, a virtual no-money-down deal. The ICE was never a real contender.

Thanks for the advice about visiting the Second Class Saloon!Wink [;)]

Nice mix of pictures!Thumbs Up [tup] Gas powered streetcar, model railway and a snowy New York Central steam locomotive!

Allan –  That cake was good!!! Looked good too, before we ate it.Smile [:)]

G'day Gents!

It's the day BEFORE Friday at the Bar by the Ballast! Time to fill up those mugs with our freshly ground 'n brewed coffee - grab a couple of pastries from The Mentor Village Bakery Case 'n order a <light> or <traditional> breakfast before starting off for work <or play>! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

We're projected to be at 10 (F) in the morning 'n again on Saturday as the cold front from the Arctic has made it's way into mid-continent USA. No appreciable snow fall predicted. <barf>

Can always count on you for some ball player names from "back in the day" - man oh man, what a great baseball card collection I had. Emphasis on "had." Collected ‘em to "flip" or trade in the school playground. I never used ‘em in the spoke's of my bike, though. <grin> Ah yes, Washington Senators to become the Minnesota Twins; then the Washington Senators to become the Texas Rangers. Yeah, I remember! <I'm old>

By the by - STILL no general ticket sales for the Cardinals! Not to worry though, I'll jump on them just as soon as the announcement is made! Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanx for the reminiscence, quarters ‘n round! Thumbs Up [tup]

Quite a bit to <digest> with your comments! Glad we're pretty much isolated ‘round here, for Lawd knows what we might attract otherwise! <grin>

Anyway, I think Rob pretty much addressed one of your questions. And by the by, I wholeheartedly AGREE with you about that "thing" atop our main Page . . . why in the world it couldn't have been placed in the ANNOUCEMENTS ‘n FAQs area is beyond me. I COMMUNICATED MY THOUGHTS ON IT shortly after it appeared. No response.

Bottom line with Rolen is that he got into a "thing" with the manager a couple of seasons back - had to do with an injury, playing time, treatments, etc. Far too convoluted for my attention span. But his relationship with his manager deteriorated to the point of no return. Perhaps the finest 3rd baseman the Cardinals ever had. A shame that personalities got in the way . . . he'd never have made it in the things I had to do to earn a pay check. Oh well . . . I too think St. Louis got the better of the deal, considering . . .

Enjoyed that rather "different" selection of covers! Yeah!! [yeah]

Thanx for the visit, chat, round ‘n everything you do for us! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 169 - Dan (DL-UK) at 11:49 AM: Another mid-day visit from our UK Connection! Getting back to normal Question [?] Hope so! Yeah!! [yeah]

It was fun thinking ‘n planning for a visit to the UK a few months ago . . . especially when it appeared that we'd get Nick <nickinwestwales> out from "hiding." But, not to be - even the best of plans seem to get sidetracked. Looking back on it - had I "locked in" on the air fares at the time, I'd have gotten a good deal in comparison with those of today. But those were coach ‘n my preference is 1st class for flights of that duration. Those prices were absolutely staggering - no way.

Should you ‘n Pete "connect," by all means hoist one to cheer "Our" Place! Yeah!! [yeah]

The way we schedule our Rendezvous for "Our" Place is by vote of those attending them. In other words the guys who show up for Rendezvous III get to decide on IV, etc.

Maybe some day we'll return to Canada - but right now, it looks like the USA for 2009 as there's a "pitch" for West Virginia by "you know who"! <grin>

Thanx for the round! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

At long last, here are some random fotos from the Dec 18th visit to the StL Museum of Transportation <Kirkwood, MO> by Wolfman Pete 'n Moi . . . I'll keep 'em at 6 to a submisison tho . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

It is worth mentioning that our regulars have seen these before - not the same shots -but variations of 'em that were taken during Rendezvous II  in May 'n Posted at the bar w/descriptions.

(1) Rock Island AeroTrain - One of two built in 1955, each trainset comprised a futuristic locomotive along with 10 cars to accommodate about 400 passengers. Designed by GM this projected low-cost train was tested by the New York Central, Pennsylvania and Union Pacific railroads and demonstrated to many others. None were ordered. The AeroTrains were sold to the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) in 1958 for suurban use between Chicago and Joliet, IL. In less than a decade they were discontinued. <paraphrased from literature purchased at the museum>

Hello Tom

I'll take one of Allan's Tui's please. And here's enough for the next round.

Rob - nice shots of the NS&T - very period atmosphere - that bridge with the streetcar track beside the road in the vertical position frames a great picture - nice work by the photographer.

Funnily enough, had my late uncle owned his house in Toronto I think we as a family might well have held on to it for a year or two as a vacation base (it was out near Bay View Village near the 401 a short walk from the newish TTC station built there). Fact is though he figured he could cut down his maintenance responsibilities in old age by selling his home and moving into a rented apartment with the rent paid from the proceeds of the house sale. I think in a way this was quite a brave and sensible decision for him as when he got into his 80s he did not want to maintain a home so a rented apartment saved him worry. The person who bought his former home (a trad Canadian Mortgage and Loan design I think they are called) simply bulldozed it to build a massive house on the plot in the most bizarre French renaissance chateau style - I kid you not! What's wrong with traditional North American architectural house styles I ask? Some people must have more money than sense! Of course after he died we had to terminate the rental lease pretty quickly.

Interesting comments on the airport link - is that Federal vs Provincial spat then? What is good is that a politician through a rail link worth mentioning - which suggests passenger rail is still a mode of transport with some life left in it!

Pete - I e-mailed Backtrack chap (in fact I copied your email address in so I hope you saw it - if not we've got a communication problem) - he replied to today to thank me and say he had copy of 1963 Modern Railways and would look up the reference I sent.

I'll keep an eye out for a Backtrack back number at a preserved railway - as that is the cheap way to procure one AND help a preservation project of some sort!

The 1963 pic showed the carriage in Maroon as the Ulster Lounge in the "Shamrock" consist. It said after 1956 it had been used in the "Ulster Express" - both LMR trains I presume on the London Holyhead route. After delivery in 1947 it had been used on the East Coast route (presumably in stainless steel ‘livery').

Great note book synopsis by the way! I firmly trust that Tom's suggestion that the chilled beer is something you will have got acclimatised to does not in fact come to pass!

Tom - Pete mentioned that the Can Am reminded him of the Settle to Carlisle line - check this link to see what you think:

http://www.settle-carlisle.co.uk/gallery/index.cfm

Those first class air line fares on the scheduled airlines - I just don't know who pays them - I guess they keep making economy worse and worse and then people at the margins say enough is enough and trade up to first so that is how they make the money out of them. I reckon you could take a Cunard transatlantic sailing for the cost of some of the fares. The smallest ship cabin could never be worse than the flight!

Allan - thanks for the round and interesting to read your memories of the 1947 winter (plus the Silver Link memories). For someone unable to know anything from the classic era (I'm just too young I'm afraid) the personal memories that people put out in Our Place really bring to life for me what I only see on web pages and in books. I really enjoy reading it (and that goes for a variety of people's posts on the site!).

CM3 - enjoyed that Southern Belle info.

Regards

DL

Digging? No I'm supervising. Pete needs the encouragement and someone to help him focus and hold his glass so he doesn't imbibe too quickly.

As far as the Caboose thing not to worry as TLT is coming out with CP and TH&B Vans later this year.

As for the Mike well it does look sweet on the layout. Just have to go out and get me some more sound decoders.

Do you notice how I haven't signed up for the Rendezvous... You guyz have far too much dirt on me and well Though I can run, It's hard dodging "bullets". Some things are best left unsaid.

Nice of you to put a few bucks on the bar for our "cleaners" - but keep in mind, they are being "punished," NOT rewarded! Hmmmmmm, wonder if THAT's a <tweetable> OH-FEN-Ssssssss Question [?] I'll have to check "the book" . . . Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

<barf>

Blush [:I]

Correct me if I'm wrong but most of the info I read on the Jubilee's indicate these were used for Commuter traffic in the Montreal area. Some very good reading on these in "Magnetic North" by Zimmerman and ... oops my memory fails me.

A large stein of Schaefer 'n slide the snack tray down my way, wudja Question [?] Round for the house, treats for the crittAHs AND PUT BORIS BACK ON THE SMALL JAR OF PPF! Libido indeed! <grin>

Hey Bossman! I sent you an email this morning . . . just a head's up. Thumbs Up [tup]

NevAH quite able to fully ‘follow' Fergie when he comes aboard. It's almost like speaking to someone with one of those "delays" built into the transmission. I think Da Guy is a day late ‘n a dollar short when it comes to remaining current at the bar. Speaking of which, I didn't note ANY acknowledgment from him that he was <tweeted>! See, I told youse guyz! <grin>

What's with the reference to Thursday Question [?] Did I miss something???? I mean what is this guy smoking or drinking or both!?!?!? <triple geesh>

Bon voyage - I thiMk . . . <grin>

Hey Bossman <part two>! Love the Can-Am layout shots and today's installment of pix from your most recent visit to that Kirkwood train museum. That's the one "close" to the Trainwreck saloon, isn't it Question [?] No wondAH you ‘n the Wolfman like to spend the time there! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Hey trolleyMAN Rob! What's the deal Question [?] You're spending so much time ‘round here lately, I'm beginning to wondAH if my job is at risk! <geesh> Even Boris is "different" lately . . . what's the deal, mate Question [?]  No complaints about the visits, as we can always use the business! Great seeing all the boyz show up <well most of ‘em> - Allan in NZ - Shane in WVA <but not today! Yet . . .> Pete in central MO - Dan in the UK <don't know where> ‘n of course Eric in that desert of his. Thumbs Up [tup]

Won't EVEN "go there" with the Cracker Barrel "count" that Eric's into . . . huh Question [?]

Some mighty interesting "stuff" put forth by the gang. I surely had no knowledge of that Canadian government-Amtrak "thing" mentioned by Eric with the X2000. So, how did you come across that info Question [?] Really unsettling.

Good to know that the book covAHs are "reaching" most of youse guyz . . . some nevAH make reference which either means they aren't seeing them <viewing> or just don't care. Either is fine, but it does set the mind to wondAH. Hmmmmm.

So where has Jan disappeared to <again> Question [?] And how about the MoPac guy called Chris Question [?] Both came on strong, now pretty much tapered off. But as long as they say they will be back, let' s take ‘em at their woId! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Thumbs Up [tup]

Many thanks for the info into the Acela dealThumbs Up [tup], it had to be something like that or they surely would have gone with a fleet of X2000s, I think.

Glad you enjoyed the photosThumbs Up [tup], unfortunately the scanner I was going to get, which I think it is the same Epson model as you have is not available at the momentSigh [sigh]. If you any suggestions for a comparable model could you please let me know.Thumbs Up [tup]

DL Received your e-mail thanksThumbs Up [tup]. It is good the editor of Backtrack sent his thanks and replied so quicklyApprove [^]. That is where my copies of Backtrack went, to preserved lines. Alan takes a few at a time and he says they are always glad to get them as the sell well.Thumbs Up [tup]

The Shamrock was a London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street express that left Euston at 4.45PM and arrived at Liverpool at 8.33pm.to connect with the night sailing to Ireland. A reference from 1960 I have found said it loaded to 14 coaches including the Silver Princess which was classified as a ‘First Reclining Chair Car'

The Ulster Express ran from Euston to Heysham to connect with the Belfast overnight sailing. It left Euston at 6.20PM and arrived Heysham at 11.13 PM. These timings were slower than previous owing to the Electrification that was heading south from Crewe at the time.

Just from the time of 5.18 to 7.44PM there were 6 named expresses due to pass through RugbyWow!! [wow] some with ex LMS Pacific locomotivesApprove [^], what a way to spend a summers evening.Yeah!! [yeah]Thumbs Up [tup]

Unfortunately I lost my notes before 1980Sad [:(] but I have listed all the train trips and some by car to preserved railways since then.Yeah!!  Many thanks for the link to the Settle & Carlisle Railway with those great photosApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. That is great shot of Ribbleshead Viaduct with the low sun.Wow!! [wow]

FERGIE That is a very important job holding the glass for me,Yeah!! [yeah] but I did wonder why the shed took so long to cleanConfused [%-)]. I wonder how your shovel had the little wear on it.Question [?]

Thanks for the info on the Jubilee 4-4-4sThumbs Up [tup] they must have looked great on the Montreal commuter traffic.Yeah!! [yeah]

Glad you are over the bug that made you sick, and hope you get back to port before the Northeaster rolls in Yeah!! [yeah]

LARS. Thanks for the round.Thumbs Up [tup] Hopefully cutting down BORIS's ration will make him less ‘lively'.Shock [:O]Smile [:)]

Yes it is indeed fortunate to have a great bar and a great railroad museum close togetherApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]; it is surprising how fast the time flies at both of them.Yeah!! [yeah]

Many thanks for the covers from the Larsman MobileApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. It looks as though there was a bad fire on the bridge in the first oneSad [:(]. They do a series of ‘Forgotten Railways' books in the UK they are fascinating reading although a little sad when one reads of the lines that have gone. Great photos on the other covers as well.Yeah!! Evening leon , I see things are shipshape so I'll mosey down to the kitchen and see if they left any fish n chips for me.  A draft of guiness as well sir if you don't mind.

Eric-Interesting thoughts on the Acela & x2000 , I had know knowledge of any Canadian content in the story either. were they built by Bombardier , because if that's the case it makes more sence as Bombardier has always been in the Liberal governments/ parties pockets ( litteraly )

I will be painting the Witt myself once it's done I'll take some more photo's of it for you.

Crackerbarrels eh I haven't been in one since my lst trip down to Florida in 1993. A chain I'd love to see set up shop here north of the boarder Thumbs Up [tup]

Yes the NS&T in itself is long gone replaced by St Catharine's transits buses, the frieght operations are still intact for the most part. They were run from 1961-1998 as a CN route after that till the preasant day they are owned and switched by the Trillium Rail shortline.

Dan-I know what you mean about the tastes of some of the real estate developers in Toronto , bigger better weirder seems the way. That area of the city though does not usually get many properties up for sale or for sale very long.fairly hot area for buyers.

Yes The Governments talk re rail travel and networks up here, but and the big but they don't necessarily like funding it , they do like giving each other digs and pointing fingers though.

I'd love to know who did take that picture at lock one.The bridge still looks the same , only it's had the driving lanes widened and there are sidwalks down both sides.

Lars-Interesting books today, don't worry I don't want your job<sheesh> I've got a full time one along those same lines. I just don't want the critters and Boris to get soft while your away sunning yourself.

Unbreakable whats Question [?]Whistling [:-^] I don't think Fergie was actually smoking anything. Dabossman tweeted him for talking model trains on thursday so I think that is what he was getting at.
