Here's a third installment of our recent trip to the StL Museum of Transportation <Kirkwood, MO> by the Wolfman 'n Moi! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

#13 Alton & Southern #12 0-8-0. Built by ALCO - 1926. 8-wheel switcher; 3-cylinder design. In dire need of TLC ‘n $$$$$.

#14 St. Louis Refrigerator Car Co. #3600. Built in 1904.  Steel framed, wood bodied with horsehair insulation, shredded paper or wood shavings. Carried pre-cooled beer <note THAT, Pete!!> for Anheuser-Busch.

#15 Terminal Railroad #318 0-8-0. Built by TRRA in 1928. 8-wheel switcher noted for being first one-piece cast bed incorporating cylinders.

#16 Interesting TRRA herald.

#17 Chicago, Burlington & Quincy <Burlington Route> #9939A. Built by EMD in 1950. Model E8A. Original 2.250 hp upgraded to 2.400 hp.

#18 Arkansas & Missouri #22. Built by ALCO in 1943. Model RS-1. 1000 hp; first road switcher.

The truck on the rails I think is used for the maintenance of the track but the day I took the photo was the only time I have seen one hauling freight carsYeah!! [yeah]. I am afraid I don't know anything about that Russian diesel I agree the loco seems to have a character to it.Approve [^]

It reminded me of when I played skittles, we played a game against a team from over 20 miles away who we had not played before, anyway the landlord of the pub came with them and seeing me came up and said "How are You", a team mate of mine heard this and said "How come ALL the pub landlords know you"Big Smile [:D]

We are very lucky here to have a great pub,Approve [^] I was there Saturday and was talking to youngish couple from Columbia and they stay a night in a hotel now and then just to have a night at Pat's. Says it all.

Great set of covers from the Larsman MobileThumbs Up [tup]. I bet ‘Follow the Flag is a good read Yeah!! [yeah]and there is a lot of power on that train in the DVD showing the double-header led by the SP locomotive on Sunshine LiveryWow!! [wow].

To all you guys. Just in for a quick visit today, the State funeral for Sir Ed Hillary has just finished and just could`nt miss the occasion which was live on TVNZ, it was a great send off for such a colossus of a man. Sherpa Tentsing`s son gave a very moving eulogy to Sir Ed, as well as all the family and friends. A very, very moving occasion!

Unfortunately will not be able to get in until Thursday again, we have to be in Napier tomorrow, so I will catch up with you all and acknowledge all your great posts, info, and pics then!Bow [bow]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Good day Tom and all at the pub by the tracks. A round of drinks are on me.

     In an effort to bring something to the table, I'm starting an "event calendar", beginning with the year 1934(my birth year) and progressing through to the present. I'm sure you all know everything there is to know about trains, but maybe there is a little I can slip in now and then without warning that will "catch you". I hope I can continue with this project as time flees. If I can finish, it will cover 73+ years of railroad history. Tom: Nice pics of your model railroad. I am especially impressed by the "telphone/power" wires on the poles. A lot of modelers don't add that bit of realism which stands out by it's absence.

  Loved the Mis and Ark RS1. what an intersting RR they were / are Question [?] I don't know if they are still running any ideas Question [?] They were a wonderfull all alco railroad that took exquisit care of their equipment.

 Is it me or did you notice that teh Classic trains magazine descriptor has more meat in it's explination now, when one views the forum options. iIwonder if they've done that to help redirecall the missplaced posts. 

Pete-Sorry to hear about your puter gremlins, hopefully they have subsided for a while.

JanOlov –  I don’t know how common those foot heaters were.Confused [%-)] I have seen something similar on one other steam locomotive.

Very nice photos from yesteryear, when traveling by train was something special.Smile [:)]

The Park City you see is somewhere along the North East Corridor. Don’t remember exactly where but between New York and New Haven. I never got used to that part of the corridor. The Quiz question photo was taken at Penn Station, NYC. It shows a MetroNorth train leaving.Smile [:)]

The cheapest gas here now is $2.80 (rounded).

Stopping a train at a certain tight spot you’ll need to really know the train, brakes and the track well. EMU’s are easier than a locomotive and cars to handle. Smile [:)]

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present: coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  It's snowing here and this morning's temperature (approx 22 degrees) was the warmest in about four days.  The K9 Korps enjoyed the cold.  He rides with me a lot of the time when I am doing errands, etc. and was some displeased that I didn't open the window so he could hand his head out.  It was +3 degrees and I didn't think it would do either of us any good.  Gas is at $3.09 today.

Let's see, there's a lot to look at this a.m.

Fergie visited - good to hear from you!

Rob was by with comments - I did not know they had a St. C car at Seashore.  I have not been there in ages.

Eric - Good luck on your upcoming surgery.  I got your photo quiz but the answer was posted ahead of mine.   For those interested in things electrical, blow up the picture of the station platform and study the catenary which is (was) unique to the NYNH&H.  Cracker Barrel - home away from home to all hungry mining folks!  Good thing about that is we work the breakfast off (yeah, right!)

Mike stopped by with comments, pictures of the 1958 Giants-Colts game which I remember very well. Also a shot of Ol' Frenchy - well done, sir! 

Lars - Done and done again!  Our Giants are finally beginning to get some respect.  Now we have to endure two weeks of hype leading to a conservatively run game.  I know, it's all about the money.  My dad (die hard Patriots fan) has to explain to folks as to why I follow the Giants.  Thanks for the book covers (I think) there are some real interesting ones this time - IOW another financial challenge.

Pete - Tractors - looks like some of the places near my father-in-law's.  He's a Deere follower.  Also, thanks for the excellent pictures!  Time warp, indeed!  I got some like that years back when they ran steam on the New River Train - you have to be willing to hike a bit, and know you'll just get a couple of shots.  Glad the link worked for you to the CSX train.  Power here is usually one or two monstrous GEs.  Eastbound, which is what the picture showed, can be one or two road engines as needed.  Sometimes there is a pusher which runs at the aft end of the train.  Incidnetally, 50 and 51 get one locomotive per 10 cars; more than 10 cars they get a pair of locomotives.  This is because what used to be the Mountain Sub on the C&O has some tough grades; it's now BBR territory (Buckingham Branch RR).

DD1 sent along some reference material which has been downloaded.

OSP as always is keeping things running.  "Stone Cold?"  Could have been filmed here the past few days.  Your Yogism reminded me of the Three stooges bit when Curly was a photographer and he was working in the darkroom.  Moe asked him about prints and Curly replied, "I'm positive about the negative, but I'm a little negative about the positive."  Enjoyed all of the pictures - poor old A&S power - I hate to see that.  Railroad magazine covers were interesting.  First one was a generic New England scene.  I enjoyed Enjoyed the ones of the G motor and of the VGN squarehead.  The last one was a cross between Rutland paint and something that looked sort of like RDG signals.  Your e-mail was rec'd and responded to as well.  I'll be here Thursday for sure, but I am not sure about Friday (until late in the day).

Tom-Ah yes, the drink orders lately have been a bit well odd. Mind you it could be an opportunity to bring in the expensive imported root beer and hot choc's , you know the ones' that the prices will give even Paris Hilton a scare.Then everyone will be back to adding the "splashes" to the regular stuff Thumbs Up [tup]

Jan-Oops [oops] uh oh your next hot choc may cost an extravegant amount. You like white chocolate and truffle latte don't you Question [?] Only $50 an ounce .Shock [:O] It's imported right from Boris's maternal grandmothers shed / cave  in Transylvania !

CM3/Shane- The Seashore has had the car since it's retirement in 1956. It will likley be painted as Montreal and Southern Counties #621. The cars were transfered in '56 from teh MS&C to St Catharines all but the one that went to Seashore -technically it never ran on teh NS&T but it's sisters and their one off trailer did. Last we heard they tended to use it as extra trolley pole storage because those cars were quick and ahave huge motors , which also gobble huge amounts of power.

Juts been catching up with stuff from last few days.

Lars - yep - in England, in the middle - land of Sherwood Forest in fact.

Eric - have the Cracker Barrel visits declined since your work schedule reduced - or do you keep it up on your days off? They must have a good menu!

Pete - Thanks for your info on the Shamrock and Ulster express - shows how wrong I was - Tend to forget about Liverpool being a connecting port for Irish ferries (it still is of course, just not rail connected as it was once to the port). I think Heysham is just for the Isle of Man now (but it does still get some boat trains - if only the rail bus from Leeds to Morecambe I think! - if you can call that a boat train!)

You mentioned the 1975 S&D celebrations - there is a great British Transport Film of that which I have on video from the BFI series, I wonder if they will issue it on US compatible DVD maybe they will. It shows each loco in the cavalcade and ends with the diesel HST prototype. The APT is dragged by a peak as I recall. Did they ever find a Japanese translator?

Not sure about the Class 92 - I fear they are still in store!

As for the free beer - I think the number of 4-6-2 Blackmore Vale (21C123) is as follows - C is for the number of driving wheels - 3 as in Co-Co for diesel. 123 being the loco number - not sure what 21 is - is it a class number or a route classification restriction?

By the way - talking of pub food I had a great pint of Adnams old Ale the other night - with some good Pork Scratchings, at one of my local pubs.

Fergie - looks like you can't escape a tweet even out in the North Atlantic if the boss decides to implement one! No place to hide!

Tom, I raised my eyebrows regarding Can Am and the Settle line - I reckon Pete is just homesick for England's most scenic main line route!

Looks like the re-post of my Ren car saga was of interest, nice pics. Eric - I think the coloured windows were vinyled over for the transition car that they house electrical equipment in and use to link the Ren car to the Budd Park car  - basically it is stripped out ex seated passenger vehicle I think. Tom will know more I guess.

Mike - your links seem to have taken on a sporting flavour - need I say more.

Allan - that 1947 winter site was superb - of course I've heard my parents speak of it (probably less harsh in Sussex than in the North East). The picture links were superb - did anyone see the pic showing BR using a borrowed Jet aircraft engine to try and blast snow off a railway line - they seem to have it strapped to a flat bed wagon in their attempt - it's worth a look. Rail scenes near Dove Holes and other locations are good too.

Like you, our family does not have so many pictures from that period - I guess it was just too expensive unless you were a photography enthusiast and able to develop your own. Do have a nice set of pics my dad's Hornby Dublo model railway loft layout taken around 1949 - 1952. He must have been allowed a few shots for that.

Jan - certainly you did a big catch up! My grandparents took the 20th C Ltd from Chicago to New York in about 1966 after visiting my parents in Chicago - then took the Cunard Queen Elizabeth back to the UK (Southampton of course). Both services (the train and the Cunarder) probably did not have long for this world at that time.

Ron - nice run down for 1934.

Rob - liked the period pictures in those two recent pictures. Nice fins on the cars!

Well, it goes like this: IF this is indeed true and our Bar Chandler wishes to make any salary 'round here, we need to FEED "Tilla 'n Cashinator" through the efforts of our paying customers.  Less concern about one's "wooden leg," 'n a bit more attention to keeping the place in a financially viable state is what we look for in our salaried employees! <geesh>

Now to your comment about those Renaissance cars with the blocked out windows. Interesting 'n plausible posit you came up with. HOWEVER, that consist did NOT have an observation dome <Park Car> nor any Budd equipment. In fact, those "refits" had not taken place yet. I seem to recall seeing baggage being unloaded 'n loaded from that car at Moncton . . . <my earlier comments to Eric refer>

The fourth installment of our recent trip to the StL Museum of Transportation <Kirkwood, MO> by the Wolfman 'n Moi! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

#19 - #21 New York Central #2933 4-8-2 Mohawk. Built by ALCO in 1929. Between 1916 and 1943, the NYC acquired 544 Mohawks for freight operations extending from the east coast to the mid-west US. Later models were adapted for passenger use. This particular loco was built in Schenectady, NY and is one of only two remaining. There are very few updates to its original running gear and appliances. This model was referred to as "Mountain" by other railroads. <paraphrased from literature purchased at the museum>

Claim to fame: This is the ONLY modern steam locomotive donated for preservation by the New York Central!

#22 Southern Pacific #4460 4-8-4. Built by Lima in 1943. #4460 was the first in a series of 10 the SP assigned to halut it's Cascade and Klamath passenger rains between Portland, OR and Oakland, CA. Capable of generating 5.500 hp, the 430-ton loco features "skyuline casting" over the boiler top which is designed to life smoke away from the cab. Last operated in 1958 while powering an SP excursion train. Donated to the museum. <paraphrased from literature purchased at the museum>

#23 New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad <Nickel Plate Road> #170 4-6-4 Hudson. Built by ALCO in 1927. This 268ton loco was used in hi-speed passenger service until the mid-1940s. IT logged nearly 2 million miles <about 80 trips around the world!>. She is the oldest of the Hudson locos which were best known for service on the New York Central railroad. <paraphrased from literature purchased at the museum>

#24 St. Louis Waterworks Railway Interurban car #10. Built by St. Louis Car Co. in 1914. A double-ended interurban car; wooden car with steel sides and arched roof; operated from Grand Ave. to Chain of Rocks Water Plant in St. Louis. The couplers on the car allowed it to haul freight for the water plant. One of two built by SLC for the city in 1914. <paraphrased from literature purchased at the museum>

   My ongoing project will be submitted each Monday(hopefully), but today is a special edition in honor of Jan.Happy B-Day [bday] I hope some of it will be of interest.

 

On this 23 day of  the year,

    Tom: That is one terrible looking GG1. It should be taken off display until it can be given a nice paint job. That is not the way one would want to remember a classic engine.

    Pete: Juneau is one nice looking dog. He must enjoy the cold, even if you don't.

    The weather has been lousy down here in Mississippi. Snow in the northern and central areas of the state and freezing temperatures along the coast. The cold and sniffles have kept me inside, so my engine project is at a halt. Gas prices are $2.83. Lots of rain has kept my son from working his truck. He can't haul dirt when the dirt pits and construction sites are muddy.

    Sorry I wasn't able to put out a special edition for Eric, as I just thought this up two days ago. I may put out a belated, special edition if I get a chance.

 I'm not supprised that Carols dad had a posting to NDHQ , it seems that most officers end up doing at least one tour there during their career. My zoomie uncle did as well the last four yeasr before he retired.He served on staff once his jet jockey days were over.

Mike-Some wonderfull pictures and urls of the old and new ( but still old ) bridges in Niagara falls. there was a guy now passed on that made full O scale models of all the train bridges from Niagara falls. He donated them to a freind of mine that is trying to get funding and a building to house a railroad museum in the Niagara peninsula, he's storing those models in his dad's garage at the moment.

Regarding that GG1 at the StL Museum of Transportation - the fotos simply do NOT tell the "story." There are far more exhibits than adequate siding space to show ‘em. So many are under cover in the "sheds" erected for that ‘n other purposes. The GG1 is not in the best of condition ‘n most probably is awaiting restorative work <I really don't know that for certain>. Anyway, I fully concur - the Amtrak livery is awful - but that's not the fault of the MoT folks. They can only do what their budget permits - just like our own household finances, eh Question [?] <sans credit, that is!> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thanx for the kind words regarding my Can-Am layout - it was fun putting it all together, especially since I'm hardly what one could or should call a "modeler." Just try to make it look the way my "mind's eye" says it should.

Yes, Juneau is not only a fine looking dog - he's a great deal of fun to be around. He keeps me "fit" - physically ‘n mentally! I "log" at least 4 miles per day in walks with him. Wonderful friend - and of course "Uncle Pete" is one of his pals. He even permits Pete to use "his" bed in our guest room! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  Cool here this a.m. (20's) and the rain we got last night turned to ice with a skiff of snow on top - lots of fun getting the vehicle unlocked this a.m.  Then we drove to work behind a truckload of concrete blocks followed by a tandem log truck (also loaded) - but we made it!

Pete - Enjoyed the pictures of "The Great Marquess."  Lovely name! 

Your comments about train handling, etc. brought to mind another phrase, "Hitting the mark."  This means stopping the train so passengers can be boarded or offloaded.  Engineers use different landmarks which can be structures, signs, etc.  The marks will vary according to the type of locomotive used. 

Back when passenger trains ran through Nashville, there was a sign on the station platform that said "Engine Cab Stop Here."  The engineer would make sure the cab door was even with the sign - amazing how they hit it time after time.  The ones that always impressed me were the ones who brought it in fast, pinched the air down and just "ghosted" to a stop - hard thing to do with a 15 car train and a pair of E8s!  I know, Boris, I'm getting all "misty."

Mike - Excellent selection of Suspension Bridge material.  Travel to Wheeling, WV and you can see a somewhat similar structure.  A list of C&O stations I have in the east wing listed two lines that operated via "Suspension Bridge" in 1957.  One was "St. Thomas - Suspension Bridge Line - Via NYCRR," and the other "Suspension Bridge - East Buffalo Line via Erie RR."  Talk abt. fallen flags - in more ways than one.

Jan - Nobody took up your challenge re "Century."  Well, "Game On!"  IMHO, 25 and 26 were the best in the east until the implosion of NYC passenger service when the "Century" had coaches added to it's consist.   The "Broadway" remained all Pullman so the title went to the P Company.  Overall, however, I would suggest that the "Super Chief" beat them all.  Boris, may I have my tin hat as I expect some incoming anytime.

OSP was by - I see where you have your K9 Korps is qualified as a railroad guard dog. Juneau looks very self-possessed and in charge of the situation. 

Mine subdued a Suddenlink truck yesterday - chased it all the way to end of the fence line.  I asked him what he would do if he ever caught one, and he looked at me as if to say, "If you can drive, I can drive."  BTW, he's buddies with our local UPS driver who owns a bunch of Labs.

I was looking at the HO equipment - interesting to see that manufacturers liked the New Haven scheme and applied it to all sorts of power and equipment that the railroad never had - but, that's the fun of it, I think!   The NH had neither Es nor Fs.  However, they did share station space in Boston with NYC Es that ran on B&A passenger trains.  Both roads at South Station had PAs, though. 

NYC 2933 was blt. At Schenectady in 1929 for the Big Four Lines.  It was r# in 1936.  Class was L2d.  Many of the Mohawks were true dual-purpose locomotives, IOW they could handle freight and passenger trains. 

Quiz for the day - which manufacturers built 4-8-2s for the Central?

That in turn leads to some things about locomotive naming.

The Central could never have a Mountain class locomotive on their roster as they were the Water Level Route.  Thus they had Niagaras, Hudsons, and Mohawks.  The exception was the Berkshire (2-8-4), but that was a B&A locomotive, which is why it got it nickname. 

Similar naming applied to certain roads in the south.  For example, the NC&StL could not have a Northern, so their 4-8-4s were called Dixies.  Second quiz for the day - what were the NC&StLs nicknames for their 4-8-4s?  Hint - it has to do with liveries.  One last bit of trivia, when WW2 began, some roads renamed their 2-8-2 (Mikado), MacArthurs.

Well, I'll enjoy that pint of Harvey's Pete has donated! Not sure I got the answer 100% correct as I'd missed the 2-1 non powered axles part. I agree Pete, I think the French used this system.

Incidentally I've just been checking out info regarding the French national railway museum at Mulhouse for some friends of mine planning their holiday - UK to Sicily by rail all the way (overnight Paris to Rome then onwards along the Italian coast, then back via ship to Naples, train to Milan, then rail through Swiss alps, Basel, Strasbourg and then the new TGV line to Paris Est. London - Paris on the new high speed rail link of course. A great journey plan I thought!

Tom - I think we might both be correct on the Vinyled Ren car - I'm sure you are correct about that one being baggage car, I think the Transition Car was also done in the same way - but I may be wrong. Yes, I could see all the pictures and have been able to do so for some time fortunately. All the better for it.

According to the http://www.britishtransportfilms.co.uk/ website. It is a short. The APT there was, I think, the Gas Turbine one given the date, unless I'm imagining this - after all I was not there - but you were!

I did not check the Elizabethan link, but I do have the BTF film on video - presume it was the same, or an extract?

I liked those Fort William run steam pics. It is great to know that service is an annual regular. I must get up there some time and try it.

Mike - nice posters and interesting links - some very vintage pics from the Niagara area - great post!

There is a Transport bookshop not far from Birmingham New Street station, which has a good selection of railway books from AmericaApprove [^], I always called in there if I had enough time while changing trains at Birmingham, I used to pickup Classic Trains magazine there.

Interesting on the locomotive names, the names referring to the wheel arrangement crossed the Atlantic and was the same in the UK, although apart from a couple of classes of 2-10-0s, we had no larger wheel arrangement (apart from articulated locos) than a small number of 2-8-2s known as Mikados.I am right in thinking it was a gentleman by the name of Wyght who came up with the wheel arrangement classifications ,eg 4-6-0, for steam locomotivesQuestion [?]

I will have to think on your quiz, but how about LIMA and ALCO for the buildersQuestion [?].

Yes I made it back to Halifax as I saw another system coming in so I hi-tailed it outta there! Good thing to as there were all kinds of delays today.
