The Chicago and Northwestern and the Milwaukee Road ,in Wausau,Wi were and still are my favorites, though i do have an interest in the Santa Fe and the Southern Pacific, when i lived for 10 years in S.Cal. Though with the CNW,I liked the vast variety of freight cars and colors that were applied to them. I'm more now interested in reading about the different railroads, before the mega-mergers,and there are just way too many fallen flags now, that are beginning to be addded in my book. Only one railroad has been black-listed,and thats the Union Pacific. I think that they have gotten too big for their britches in what they have done with modelers and railfans alike. To me,its a dirty shame that they have tarnished their reputation as a railroad.[V]

Hi group.

I'm partial to most of the classic "Fallen Flag" roads through Texas and the Southwest, including MoPac, MKT, Burlington/FW&D, Santa Fe, and SP/Cotton Belt/T&NO.

But my favorite will always be the Texas & Pacific. Diamonds are forever!

Someone once said everyone has 2 favorite roads: the B&O and one other. That's me, but with NYC 1st, then B&O, plus NYO&W just for fun.

I come from a B&O family but I grew up on the Erie, so for me number one is Erie. I like the Pennsy, too, although in our family PRR was called "the Pigtail." A B&O man would say that with a sneer. Nickel Plate is special in my memory, too. I saw their Berks, Hudsons and Bluebirds and loved them all. For me, today's railroads are all the same. The only differences are geography and paint. They are still fun to watch, just a little bland compared to yesteryear.

How about the Reading Railroad and the Delaware and Hudson?? The PRR is up there to but it was a little before my time. The reading still ran through my area in the mid 70;s. And for th D@H they took over the pennsy main to sunbury so I got to see alot of change[2c][[tup][:)]

No doubt about it! Santa Fe gets my vote! I've watched ATSF from CO, NM, CA, KS,AZ,and points East. I was there when 4-4-2 Atlantics plied the line through CO to Raton, NM. Have always been an ATSF fan. Too bad they joined the "Pumpkin Line" with the big Orange goofy paint job! Oh, well . . . Anyone heard how the UP suit is going against mfrs?

My favorite RR is SP. They ran Cab Forwards, GS-4 Daylights, Mountains, Mallets, and just about everything else. I grew up by the Santa Cruz branch and until 1997 saw the SP every day.

Mine is CSX. I love the diversity in their trains. The Tropicana train is facinating-that is alot of orange juice! Their intermodal trains along the Cleveland Subdivision are very long often times the smallest is 150 cars and the most being 200 cars (200 cars!). It is even more impressive to see an over 150 car intermodal racing by at 60mph whistling for a crossing and blinking the ditch lights.

I don't have a favorite railroad today times. Before 1880's it was four railroads
1 PRR
2 ACL
3 NYC
4 ATSF
Today, there not railroads, but companies making money from railroads.

I very much followed the C&O,particularly in E Ky,and WVA.
I grew up around it and think alot about it.
For growing up,try Raceland and Russell for starters.

Being Crazy, keeps you from going "INSANE" !! "The light at the end of the tunnel, has been turned off due to budget cuts" NOT AFRAID A Vet., and PROUD OF IT!!

Though I never actually saw any in person I like the New York Central. I have seen a lot of pictures. I like the NYC subway system but I'm not sure you can really consider it a company though.

When I used to live in Detroit,Michigan long ago, there were quite a few railroads with famous names. I have to start with with my first favorites is the NYC(witch includes the Big Four, that goes to Ohio),then GTW(that had tracks close to where I lived),C&O,PRR,Wabash,PRR And the B&O.

I grew up near the NYC, GTW, Santa Fe (in Tulsa,OK) the B&O and C&O in the 40's and 50's....I spent many an hour watching the Mohawks, Hudsons and every now and then the mighty Niagara steam locos go by....... WOW!!!!!!.......I really loved them all but, if you put a gun to my head I would have to say my favorite was the old NYC. During the peak WW2 years in Detroit, you would see at least 10 to 12 freight trains an hour (on certain days) go by between the NYC and the GTW......one Wed., during summer break from school, I almost missed the day for 10 cartoons at the show there was so much traffic.
