Good Morning Barkeep and All Present; coffee, please; round for the house, and $ for the jukebox.

Thanks to all who contributed yesterday and last night - certainly a memorable celebration. I noticed on my way by this a.m. that the local switcher was busy behind the building - where did all of those mt tank cars and insulated boxcars come from? And why is Boris "decorating" the car tops? You should know better than to give him a brakeman's club. Tom, you let him slip out the backdoor again!

Locally, gas is at $2.89 (price at all stations in the territory went up simultaneously - wonder how that happened?) And the weather highlight this a.m. was lots of thunder and lighting while the Weather Channel (Local on the 8s) said it was clear. The k9 Korps loved it - one is scared and the other gets aggressive when it thunders. BTW, the definition of a Springer Spaniel is a racquetball in a dog suit.

Seeing that we are getting close to Easter, it reminds me of when the F40s were new in the NEC. High point of a trackside trip on the Friday b4 Easter was the Southern Crescent heading into Boston behind matched pairs of brand-new F40s. The plural is correct as the train ran in sections (!). First section had the feature cars including the transcon sleeper which operted in and out of Boston - 14 cars total. Second section (all coach with a snack bar car in the middle of the train) was 12 cars running abt 20 minutes behind the first. Maybe we can get a few comments started on trains running in sections. The 20th Century was, of course, a prime example. I recall reading somewhere where the record for that train was seven sections. Nowadays, ATK can't even get enough cars to have a sleeper opewrate between Boston and DC. Better stop b4 Awk chases me into the "rat room."

Good Afternoon Captain Tom and all assembled!

Just a brief visit to add my congratulations to the mix on the festivities of yesterday. Quite a turnout and quite an endorsement for our Proprietor ("steamed," is it?) insofar as the success of his creation is concerned. Well done![tup]

I will have just a wee bit of Southern Comfort on the rocks, if you please - "three fingers" is fine![swg]

Does not appear as if Captain Tom is "active" this day, and I surely do not blame him. Just a glance at the SUMMARY should tell the tale - he was on line pretty much from before sunrise to well after sunset. That is a long day for anyone and it was done for all of us. Again, well done![tup]

We will be heading out for the Easter weekend. Neither of us are what you would term "religious," but my bride-to-be makes a "pilgrimage" of softs at this time to year to visit with family. So, it will be a different experience for me, as I cannot recall the last time I found myself in an environment like that - and WANTING to be there![swg]

Let me pass my best wishes to one and all for a wonderful weekend, and for those of you celebrating Easter - Happy Day![tup]

G'day Gents!

First & foremost - the "Missing Post" returns:

QUOTE: pwolfe Pete Posted: 12 Apr 2006, 14:49:19 Quote

Hi Tom and all.

The party seems in full swing with visits of LARS DON TED MIKE BK and DON since my last visit and I noticed we have passed 6000 replies on our anniversary .[tup][tup]

The secret of page 300.
While in the Mentor Inn brewhouse(see below) I overheard Vito the Hit devising a scheme to see the only Mentor Village bookmaker not owned by his 'family' put out of business. There were very long odds on Our Place being on page 300 on the 12th.
Anyway after putting the 'frighteners" on the regulars Vito has won the bet, the rivals betting shop is to be turned into a female Body-piercing Parlour operated by the Ladies of Perpetual Motion( piercing $20 to watch$100), and have I recieved a well filled brown envelope although most of the cash will have to go in repairing the Brewhouse.(also see below)

BORIS, LEON AND I have brewed some ales for the party.[:D] They come straight from the barrel and are made from the pure[?] water of the CAN-AM gorge. They are.

BORIS'S BEVVY( 3.7%ABV) A strange brew with a hint of [alien]in it. (it would have been stronger but Boris left the hosepipe in it too long)

[4:-)]TOM'S TIPPLE(4.7%ABV) A refreshing N. American beer. Good all year round and a favourite at Our Place.

TEX'S TAIL ALE(6.5%ABV) Don't be put off by the color. A good tasting ale, but it can creep up and give you a bite. A favourite of the track gang.

AWK'S ANVIL ALE(8.9%ABV) Green in color but surprisingly full bodied with a hint of nuts. After a few you can get the feeling of having been dive-bombed.

LEON'S LITES OUT(12%+ABV) Very dark, very full-bodied and very strong only to be taken if you have a reservation to sleep on the pool table over night.

We did have H&H'S HAMMER([?][?][?]%ABV) but the vat exploded.

[:D]We hope you enjoy the selection. I have probably spent too much time a Real Ale Festivals in the UK[:D] PETE.

So, that makes yesterday's TOTAL 61 - sixty one Posts for a day! Long live the King! <huh>

Thanx, Pete for the "heads up" via E-mail - Mea Culpa! Got "lost" in the flurry of activity and glad that it was 'caught.' Nice input![tup][tup][tup]

Now to the acknowledgments - yes, I am trying to get some things done after a long day here at the keyboard 'n screen. Good to get outside and have more to do. So, THANX for stopping by this fine day to:
coalminer3 CM3 "my name is not Shane!"
LoveDomes Lars "let me tell you how I REALLY feel!"
BudKarrr BK "I are family, just my mountain sweetie, and me (to the tune of "We are Family!"[swg]

Thanx for the rounds - quarters - kind words and mainly, YOUR participation![tup][tup][tup]

Hi Tom and all.

OO me head. A cup of coffee please I should be able to manage a Bathams or a Holdens later, they are on top form. What a great day yesterday . I felt privaleged to be a part[wow][yeah][tup][tup][tup].

PERS Glad you liked the pic of #1. TOM kindly posted pics taken at York railway museum taken earlier this year on pages 232, 238, 239, 244 and245.

MIKE Thanks for the great postcards and slide show links. wonderful photo at KC.
They must have used different lyrics for the Casey Jones TV show the words I remember were something like.
Casey Jones
When you hear the tooting of the whistle
When you hear you never have to guess
Its Casey Jones at the throttle
At the throttle of the Cannonball Express.

It was such a long time ago but I can still remember how much I used to look forward to the show coming on.

AL good to see you in[tup].

LARS Great to see so many old regulars call in.

CM3 The Switcher has finished marshalling the MT cars and is now waiting for a helper to assist hauling them away[:-^]
I hope there is a good response to the portions theme.

In the UK probably the most famous train known for the different portions was The Atlantic Coast Express which ran on the Southern Railway from London and served locations in the West Country of England. The train got its name in 1926 after a comptition for SR staff, it soon became known as the ACE.

The train split at Exeter , Okehampton and Halwill Junction. ther were through cars for Seaton, Sidmouth and Exmouth in Devon county, and Padstow, Bude, Ilfracombe in Cornwall. there was also a portion for Plymouth but this did not run on Saturdays.
On summer Saturdays the train could be run in several parts to transport the great number of holidayers heading for their annual vacation. The train reached its peak in the mid 50s before car ownership got widespread.

The train departed London Waterloo at 11AM and there was a fast run with a Merchant Navy 4-6-2 to Exeter. At Padstow there was often the sight of a West Country Light Pacific at the head of 2 or3 cars after the other portions a had been dropped off.
The ACE lasted till 1964 and most of the Cornwall destinations have rails no longer today [:(].

BK Have a Great Easter weekend[tup].

TOM Glad you liked the beer list. BORIS had the time of his life stirring the vats and NASA has expressed an interest to the formula to H&H's Anvil for use as a rocket fuel[:)] PETE.

G'day!

Remember the song, "What a difference a day makes"[?] Applies to our Feast or Famine Bar 'n Grill today, fer sure, fer sure![swg] However, surely can understand how some of the guys rolled the dice big time yesterday and require some "recoup" time.

Nice afternoon Post from Wolfman kept the place 'alive' and I'm in hopes that we get a few more B4 Leon the Night Man closes up tonight . . . [tup]

Okay - 'nuf talkin' to myself![swg]

<bonk> <boink> <bonk> (What kinda gavel is this [?])

Oye, Oye – All Rise for the Order of the Stools Selection Committee

We are rized ….

Quiet!

Who let that parrot in here [?]

Right!

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

You may be seated!

The Selection Committee of the Order of the Stools announces the findings of their April meeting (which they weren’t going to have, but did anyway, probably because they knew the beer and food from the 1st Year Anniversary Celebration would still be available!).

Be it known from this day forth that the following customer of ”Our” Place has been distinguished by frequent and meaningful participation along with willingness to engage in the banter at the bar:

barndad Doug who first visited us on July 12th, 2005, and was selected for the Order of the Stools on November 22nd, 2005, has been awarded a PERMANENT STOOL in the the bar known as ”Our” Place!

Congratulations to you, Doug! [tup][tup][tup]

This honor carries with it certain responsibilities to the continued success of ”Our” Place. A willingness to pick up the slack when long term absences occur along with participation in the special events, such as Birthday Bash celebrations and the like.

The next meeting of the Committee will be quarterly (maybe) with no date determined.

This session is now concluded.

<bonk> <bornk <bonk> (We gotta do better than this!)

All Rise as the Selection Committee departs.

We are still rized …

Confound it! (Is THAT an Armadillo I see over there[?])

Awk, Awk, Awk

Quiet!

Drinks on the house! Boris ring the bell, twice! [tup][tup][tup]

Good Evening Tom and fellow travelers at the bar!

Had to do some 'serious' shopping on the web and thought I'd check out the "happenings" over here. Glad I did - CONGRATULATIONS to DOUG on the elevation to PERMANENT STOOL status in the revered and most special Order of the Stools![yeah][wow]<way to go!>

Ring the bell, Boris! A round on me barkeep! What[?] Huih? The bell is STILL missing[?][?] What in the world happened[?] This won't do! Is someone - anyone - looking into this[?][%-)][%-)][%-)]

I'm a bit light in the wallet tonite, gents, but I do have a ten spot to pay for the round![swg]

Not to worry about the attendance today, Herr Kapitan - based on the strong showing yesterday, you KNOW they are "out there," just doing other thngs today (tonight).[tup]

Again, my CONGRATS to "the man- barndad Doug - an appropriate and deserved bit of recognition! Here's a 5-[tup] to you, Sir! [tup][tup][tup][tup][tup]

Until the next time!

PETE-that Stirling single is a classic example of form & function in harmony-a truly beautiful machine.
Nice note on the A.C.E-I`m sure the popularity of S.R branch modelling is based around the plausibility of running a light pacific with a 3-car diner set at least once a day
TOM-forgot to mention yesterday,Gazette a work of special note-classifieds almost caused cardiac incident,by luck or design the classic `local paper` flavour has been caught perfectly.

Just been forcibly reminded that in-laws are arriving in the morning and staying until next tues.........unlikely to be in touch before next Pikes Perspectives day (small cottage-all rooms become bedrooms at need ) but will hopefully have fresh pix from V.o.R Rly to offer as appeasement when next we meet

Hi Tom and all.

LEON a pint of the Holdens ordinary bitter please.

Like LARS I was on the web loading some photos and thought I would drop in for a nightcap and saw DOUGS award of the PERMANENT STOOL WELL DONE AND VERY WELL DESERVED SIR [bow]

NICK Glad you liked the pic of #1 trully a Classic engine. It must have been marvellous to have been around in the early 1900s when them and the Midland 'Spinners' were in regular service [wow].

In the photos I recived from the friend in England there is a great shot of a Beattie 2-4-0 well tank in BR black. I will post it a week on Sunday for you if I can.

Looking forward to the V of R pics and have a great Easter.

Well Tom I will leave some funds for tomorrow to celebrate Doug's elevation [tup][tup][tup] PETE.

Comedy Corner

Yarns from the Barn
(from barndad Doug’s Posts)

[:I] A man was being tailgated by a stressed out woman on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman hit the roof, and the horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, finger printed, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.
He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk. Naturally, I assumed you had stolen the car." [:I]

[:I] Two elderly retired phone men are pushing their carts around Walmart when they
collide. The first old guy says to the second guy, "Sorry about that. I'm looking for my wife, and I guess I wasn't paying attention to where I was going."
The second old guy says, "That's OK, It's a coincidence. I'm looking for my wife, too. I can't find her and I'm getting a little desperate."
The first old guy says, "Well, maybe I can help you find her. What does she look like?"
The second old guy says, "Well, she is 27 yrs old, tall, with red hair, blue eyes, long legs, big busted, and is wearing short shorts. What does your wife look like?"
The first old guy says, "Doesn't matter, let's look for yours." [:I]

[:I] A doctor and a lawyer were talking at a party. Their conversation was constantly interrupted by people describing their ailments and asking the doctor for free medical advice. After an hour of this, the exasperated doctor asked the lawyer, "What do you do to stop people from asking you for legal advice when you're out of the office?"
"I give it to them," replied the lawyer, "and then I send them a bill." The doctor was shocked, but agreed to give it a try. The next day, still feeling slightly guilty, the doctor prepared the bills. When he went to place them in his mailbox, he found a bill from the lawyer. [:I]

Good Morning Gents!

Sounds like a broken record, but we’re into a week’s worth of blue sky days! No complaints – BUT – the temps are going to reach the 90s (F) here in mid-Continent USA – and that ain’t my kinda thing at all.<ugh> Saw that Petrol was at $2.69 (rounded) up at “Collusion Corner” yesterday – no answers, just have to roll with it. Could be worse and probably will be![tdn]

Congratulations to barndad Doug! on his elevation to Permanent Stool status!! The Order of the Stools is enriched even more by this selection![tup][tup][tup]

Sent a couple of E-mails to all “interested customers” on subjects we should be aware of. Check your “in boxes” boyz![swg]

Many THANX to Lars – Nick ‘n Pete for stopping by last night. Made an otherwise slooooooooooooow day a bit more interesting, fer sure, fer sure![tup][tup]

Given that many of us will be doing other things over this Easter weekend, I don’t expect that the bar will be busy nor will our Sunday Photo Posting Day! be very active. I’ll be ‘around,’ but my Posts will be spaced apart, just to try ‘n keep us “up on the Forum page.” Hope everyone has a great weekend![yeah]

Good morning Tom, just something light this morning, a six pack of keith's please[:D][;)] It is liquid bread donchaknow[:p]

Well first things first I suppose, a hearty congrats to Doug, to be sure. You will notice that the stool is bolted to the floor to ensure that as a permanent stool you remain upright and dignified[:D]

It twas nice to see Fergie in again, I hope that it does continue,if I gleaned somw info correctly from the CS, I believe that the Terry Fox now has broadband service, so even when he's in the Artic he may be able to pop by once in a while.[tup]

Nick When i was sweeeping up under the counter, I found a couiple of your teeth imbedded in a sheded bit of armour plate of Tex's. Might be why he's not talking to you this morning.

The second item of note today is that I do intend to amble by for our local mutifingered ones[:D][;)] birthday festivities on tuesday next.Mind you the forms might have to be prepared in triplicate.[;)]

Well off to fuel up before we wend our way south to mom and dad's. Nice weather for the second day in a row mid 70's bright sun, and gas at 99 cents a litre[tdn][:(!].

Back later

Good Morning Herr Kapitan! and fellow travelers at the bar![swg]

‘Tis I, LoveDomes feeling a bit sad and happy as this Easter weekend moves into full meaning. Today, of course is a somber reminder for millions, whereas Sunday is yet another time for more joyous reflection. Movin’ right along . . .

Stealing a page from the Urlmeister (as Tom calls him), check these URLs out:

(the next one is for Pete ‘n Nick!)
http://www.onerailway.com/latestinformation/news/newsdisplay.asp?id=888

For some strange reason this morning, my stomach thinks my throat has been cut! So, barkeep, rustle me up one of those 2 foot long heros – ya know – ham, swiss, buttAH & mustAHD – a couple of pickles from the barrel and a frosty mug of whatever the draught is today![tup] Here’s a ten spot for the “Lars Box,” which I’m guessing was depleted during our 1st Year Anniversary shindig.[tup]

Quite ‘round the joint today, huh[?] I see that “my” NY Mets are 7-1 and off to a great start. Yeah, I know, I know – it’s only 8 games. But believe me, for those who have suffered through these past several mediocre seasons, this is grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat (as Tony the Tiger used to say!)[swg]

Will be heading over to Shea for tonight’s game against Milwaukee. My sons and I try to take in a game sometime before Easter Sunday and the schedule worked out for us. Of course, with the Yankees up in the Bronx, we generally have at least one team “home.” You remember those days, right Tom[?] Way back then - we had the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees. Baseball was “king.” What I’d give to pick up a paper and read about our heroes of today in the manner that they were back then. Know what I mean[?] Today, we read about steroids, drugs, cheating, bickering, malcontents, etc. Hard to consider THIS our national pastime!

I too will be somewhat scarce this weekend as it truly is a family “thing” for us as well and we surely look forward to it. The wife prepares a feast – we all over eat – try to walk it off – usually cannot – wind up sitting outside with a brew or two and wind down the weekend with some laughs, reminiscing and the like. Nice time at our house.[tup]

By the way, I received your two emails and was already geared up for Al’s B’day Bash and of course, recognition of “our man” barndad Doug! Wonder if this means he won’t be communicating with “the likes of us” in the “reserved stools,” now that his is “permanent’[?][:O]

Acknowledgments to Pete - Nick - Rob & CM3 - probably not in the correct order, but still wanted to say "Howdy!"[swg]

I will leave you with this thought: when out in the yard this weekend, those little "chocolate looking things" in the grass, are NOT Raisenettes or Goobers peanuts![:O]

Another by the way – WHERE IS THE BELL[?][?]

Until the next time!

G’day All!

PASSENGER TRAIN NOSTALGIA #83

Here’s something to enjoy regarding the Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) in a 1940 advertisement from my private collection:

The Swing is to Florida

. . . . .
VIA COAST LINE

Hi Tom and everyone, a round for Doug when he gets here.

Pete, thanks for checking out the pictures of the locomotive described at Rouses Point the other day.

CM3, as you know, Rouses Point is just a few miles from St. Albans as the crow flies, so I imagine whatever the weather was there was about the weather my father experienced growing up in "The Railroad City".

Good Friday is a good day to contemplate sacrifice.

From When Lilacs Last In The Dooryard Bloom'd

"To the tally of my soul,
Loud and strong kept up the gray-brown bird,
With pure deliberate notes spreading filling the night.
Loud in the pines and cedars dim,
Clear in the freshness moist and the swamp-perfume,
And I with my comrades there in the night.
While my sight that was bound in my eyes unclosed,
As to long panoramas of visions.
And I saw askant the armies,
I saw as in noiseless dreams hundreds of battle-flags,
Borne through the smoke of the battles and pierced with missiles I saw them,
And carried hither and yon through the smoke and torn and bloody,
And at last but a few shreds left on the staffs, (all in silence,)
And the staffs all splinter'd and broken.
I saw battle-corpses, myriads of them,
And the white skeletons of young men, I saw them,
I saw the debris and debris of all the dead soldiers of the war,
But I saw they were not as was thought,
They themselves were fully at rest, they suffer'd not,
The living remain'd and suffer'd, the mother suffer'd,
And the wife and the child and the musing comrade suffer'd,
And the armies that remain'd suffer'd."

Good afternoon Tom and everyone. I’ll have a Bathams puhleeze. Here’s a twenty for a round on me. That was quite a shinzdig Wednesday, and I see that most of us made it through without too much drain bamage

Congrats to Doug for his upgrade to Permanent Stool Status (Sniff Sniff) Is that stool made of cheese?[xx(] Must be from all those jokes.[:o)]

YEEOUCHH!! [:(!] What did I just sit on? OH, Nick, I found the rest of your teeth that Rob missed. Some of that polygrip paste stuff should help ya keef your teef in your mouf [;)]

I see Pete wandering out in the parking lot even as I speak (write). How are ya? C’mon in. Glad to see you survived Wednesday’s festivities.

A greeting wave to the others in the back room. Some yard duties await me so I gotta move-on.

Take care,

Russell

Good Afternoon Barkeep and All Present; coffee (iced), please; round for the house; and $ for the jukebox.

Iced coffee is because we have made the transition in WV to what I call "instant summer." It was snowing here two weeks ago. Weather here is warm and sunny right now which means it'll be raining soon...........

Can't wait to drive the WV Turnpike on the way home because warm weather marks the appearance of flatlanders with !@#$% campers or monstrous wheeled condominia who get hung out in the passing lane because they don't realize that there is no level land in this part of the world. Encountering this, I use more sentence enhancers than Awk did when he got his feathers caught in the fan behind the bar. I'm sure Nick can come up with some name for that situation as he has a gift with words.

Wanswheel - I spent lots of time in St. Albans, too; how about St. Johnsbury; boil in the summer freeze for the other 10 months of the year. Then there's White River Jct and Swanton as well. For excitment, we can go watch the GT at Island Pond.

BTW, thanks so much for sharing the Whitman poem with us. Lincoln, of course, was assassinated this day in 1865.

Tom - Enjoyed the ACL ad as well. Grandma preferred the SAL when she traveled to Florida, but it was largely a function of where she went (she always said the SAL travel4d to more destinations with horse and dog tracks) - she's been gone a long time, but I still miss her this time of year as we used to go to her place, which was about 1/2 block from the New Haven's Shore line for Easter, unbeatable combination - good cooking, family stories, and lots of trains.

Lars - Enjoy the ballgame; we can't afford to go see the Red Sox play anymore; it's prohibitive for four people - and this is not even factoring in the travel expense.

Everyone have a good Easter weekend. There's lots of church activities for our family, and as others have suggested, shameless overeating.

See you all next week.

G’day Gents!

It’s HOT! Set a record today at 92 (F) for April 14th!

Why St. Louis spring-time is so HOT . . .

... We go to McDonalds to get coffee and pour it on our laps -- just to cool off!

... The farmers must feed their cows ice cubes, so they don't give powdered milk.

... The farmers feed their chickens ice chips, so they don't lay hard boiled eggs.

... They don't bother making themometers that go below 70 degrees.

Awful, eh[?] Well, someone had to pick up the slack for barndad Doug!![swg]

“Sage advice” regarding those “chocolate things” in the grass! I’m still laughing . . . [swg]

I haven’t said a thing about the bell, hoping that someone would pick up on it . . . . apparently we’ve slipped back into the “selective reading mode,”<grin> I’ll have something to say on it, but want to see if anyone can “make something out of it.”

Have a great family weekend![tup]

Here's something I just Posted over at "my other thread," but thought appropriate for a "nite cap" right here![tup]

From one of my cross-Canada trips . . .

Mt. Robson - Highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies at 12,972 ft/3,953 m.
Taken from the observation dome of VIA Rail's Strathcona Park Car - eastbound "Canadian."

Oh [yeah] - not to worry - we found the bell![swg] Seems the track gang guys were havin' a bit o' fun at the 1st Year Anniversary Celebration and thought one of his "oppostie numbers" should "wear it as a hat!" Well, that began a ruckus and the next thing ya know, it "disappeared" for a bit. Rolled outta sight back in the pool room - but was later retrived during the reconstruction cleanup!<grin>

A quick good morning to all before I head into work this am. Tom just a quick breakfast and an extra large coffee please. Tom I did indeed see the history post on 298. I though that i had commeneted on it but maybe not <halftimers>It twas well put together as per usual,I didn't have much extra toa dd so that's likely why the response was lost in the shuffle, no worries it happens. Yes the stool bolts were installed during the reconstruction phase given the near death experiances Boris's waxing produced on the 12th.

Good to see that Russ made it in and found the rest of Nick's teeth, I was worrying that they may have ended up in the soup vat. [:O]

Mike and lars some great url's gents, I will more deeply dig into them later tonight when I have a bit more time, hope that the ballgame was enjoyable Lars.

Well I must rush off everyone have a good day I'll try to pop back in later

Yarns from the Barn
(from barndad Doug’s Posts)

[:I] A blonde gets on an airplane and goes straight to 1st class and sits down. The stewardess comes by and tells her she has to move to her seat in coach. She tells the stewardess " I'm blonde, and beautiful and going to Dallas." The stewardess doesn't know what to do to get her to move so she goes to the cockpit. She explains the situation to the pilot and co-pilot. The co-pilotgoes back and tells her she has to go to her seat in coach. She again says " I'm blonde, and beautiful and going to Dallas."
He goes back and tells the pilot he had no success. The pilot says " I have a blonde wife. I know how to speak blonde." He goes back and whispers in her ear. She says " Oh, I didn't know" and moves back to her coach seat. The stewardess and the co-pilot both want to know what he said to make her move. The pilot says I just told her that 1st class wasn't going to Dallas! [:I]

[:I] An elderly man lay dying in his bed when he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favorite sugar cookies wafting up the stairs. He gathered enough strength to get out of bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom.
With even greater effort, he forced his bony fingers to grab the handrail and he went down the stairs, one stumbling step at a time.
With labored breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death's agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven.
There, on the kitchen table, spread out in rows upon wax paper, were literally hundreds of sugar cookies. Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife of 60 years, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man?
Mustering one great final effort, he lunged toward the table, landing on his knees in a rumpled posture, his parched lips were slightly parted. The wondrous taste of the cookie was already in his mouth, seemingly bringing him back to life.
His aged and withered hand shakingly made its way toward a cookie at the edge of the table, when suddenly it was smacked with a spatula by his wife.
"Stay out of those," his wife said. "They're for the funeral !" [:I]

[:I] A couple of Arkansas hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls 911. He gasps to the operator, "My friend is dead! What can I do?"
The operator, in a calm soothing voice says, "Just take it easy. I can help. First, lets make sure he's dead."
There is a silence, then a shot is heard . . . The hunter says, "OK, now what?" [:I]

Good morning Tom and all! Hokey Smokey .... a Permanent Stool para mi? Unbelievable! Thank-You kindly sirs! This is most unexpected! I'm so excited, I can barely eat!

I'll have three lite breakfasts, a pitcher of orange juice, another lite breakfast and a pot of coffee please. Now that my stool is bolted to the floor, I'll really be able to pack away the food and drink! Thank-you for the congratulations Tom, Lars, Peter, Shane (my name's not CM3), Rob and Russel! Sorry about my absence these last few days, but I've been busy working on lining up a place to move to, and get this one for sale. I apologize for the speed-bump in the usual data-flow, but hope to "get back on track" ASAP!

Looks like the place had quite the anniversay celebration the other day, once again proving just how unique this thread and the men who frequent it truely are. Well done gentlemen, and let's keep it going!

[:I] A drunk is driving through the city and his car is weaving violently all over the road. A cop pulls him over and asks, “Where have you been?”
“I've been to the pub,” slurs the drunk.
“Well,” says the cop, “it looks like you've had quite a few.”
“I did alright,” the drunk says with a smile.
“Did you know,” says the cop, standing straight and folding his arms, “that a few intersections back, your wife fell out of your car?”
“Oh, thank heavens,” sighs the drunk. “For a minute there, I thought I'd gone deaf.” [:I]

Good Saturday Morning to each and all. Tom, I really need a Stoli and tomato juice, if you please and never mind the paper parasol or garbage. I'm recovering from a frontal lobotomy resulting from the bottle in front me on Anniversary Day. Pete, you may wi***o talk to the micro brewers about the "Tex's Tail" batch.[:-^] This is a special weekend for more reasons than one. Congratulations Barndad Doug on your new found "permenancy." I know you will wear the honor well.[tup] Hi to Russell, Lars, CM3, Rob, Nick, BK, Mike and our new found "friends of a feather" Pers.

There are many activities going on this weekend, so I doubt that "Pikes Perspectives" or Photo Posting Sunday will be swamped today and tomorrow. I am greateful to have found some free moments for sending best wishes to everyone over the hoilday. The old L.V. promo was appreciated and Mike's input on the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line certainly jarred the memory banks.[^] I guess we are all looking forward to Passenger Fan Al's birthday bash on Tuesday the 18th. That will be from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. my time, so I should be able to attend "with bells on" and of course street attire as well. Tom and Rob, I got kind of a scare with the threatened Delta pilot's strike but it seems to have been resolved, thank heavens. Okay, I must get some shrubs and lawn issues under control today before the City Fathers post a notice on the front door.[swg] Right, I see the bell has been found and Nick has his teeth returned, so the pre Easter egg hunt is resolved. In that case, I shall part with a mention that the "Trains" book realy will be posted early next week to Pete. Boris, grab your clapper...ready? Let fly...BONG...now that's more like it! Happy rails and happy holiday.

Hi Tom and all.

A mug of the coffee and any chance of a tradition breakfast.CINDY.

Good to see you RUSSELL. I was in the car-park yesterday and heading for the bar door when the bride caught me and I had to go to Columbia MO. I did get the chance to take a couple of photos of the old WABASH depot building The station area is in use as bus depot and the building is to be renovated to its 1910 condition.[^].

Thanks for the interesting links LARS and MIKE[tup].

DOUG Hope the move goes smoothly. Liked the joke[:)] Looking forward to more Railroad Magazine stories when you can. More than welcome to the Congrats[tup][tup][tup].

G'day!

Nearly noon and I'm done, finished, no mas! with the lawn work - always good for about 2 1/2 hours of sweat! Fortunately the temps this morning are much more tolerable than yesterday when we were sweltering in April!<groan>

See that Ted Posted pretty much at the same time as my last - didn't really have time to hang around, but I saw it! (That refresh/repost really works!)

You must be suffering the lingering effects of the 1st Year Anniversary Celebration for Pike Perspectives is recognized on Wednesdays - YOU "originated" it![swg] Anyway, I expect there will be considerable absences through the weekend. We'll survive![tup]

Glad to see ya, Pete and we'll look forward to your Pix on Sunday Photo Posting Day!. Run into any difficulties, let me know - you've got the number![tup]

Ted Appreciate the "heads up" on the RR Book Relay! - please ship off an E-mail to Pete 'n me when it's in the mail. Thanx![tup]

Pete That's interesting info on the old Wabash Depot in Columbia. Hope your Pix turned out well enough for Posting . . . hate to see those old buildings go, especially when it involves railroads.

Okay boyz, I'm back at "it" - the bride has a bunch of "Honey do's" all lined up for me. Ain't love grand[?] You betcha![swg]

Thanx Cindy for giving up your Saturday to help out 'round here. And why of course it's perfectly okay for you and your lady friends to use the back room to color eggs! Spend as much time as you like, but just be aware of Tex and Awk - they have a "thing" for eggs. One thinks they're food, while the other wants to nurture 'em!<grin> Should be interesting . . .

Later![tup]

PASSENGER TRAIN NOSTALGIA #41

Here’s something to enjoy regarding the GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY in a 1949 advertisement from my private collection:

. . . . . Glacier National Park . . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . IN THE MONTANA ROCKIES . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

HIKE on high trails.

RIDE to ancient glaciers.

SEE snowclad mountains.

FISH in great trout waters.

TOUR in open top motor coaches.

EAT and sleep in fine hotels.

ON THE MAIN LINE OF THE GREAT NORTHERN

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Enjoy! [tup]

[8D] Greetings to all this fine day, Tom, sixty post, incredible[^][^] that calls for a round of the best Ale money can attain. Looks we had a great anniverasary, that first post of mine sure does take me back.

I haven't any hard numbers, but I suspect we me have drank several small breweries into bankruptacy with all the celebratory functions.

Well, I was informed yesterday that i'm line for promotion, conducive on that I sucessfully complete the tedious training course. Seems my Commander has serious health issues, in addition he will, within the next year be at the required retirement age.. The training course dosen't seem all that difficult compared to the training required when I was a Federal Agent , just the same can't become too comfortable.....

I'd like to expand on a reply offered by our newest member "Marthastrainyard" regarding the PE Hollywood Tunnel, true the foundation for the Arco Towers did invade the tunnel. Several lawsuits resulted from this as the the city intended to keep the tunnel clear, at the time it was being used for city storage and as a fallout shelter, but if the city rebuilt a rail transit system the tunnel would prove invaluable from a labor and time factor and be exempt from the newest bugaboo of the time enviormental studies.

The tunnel saw very little use by the PE, it was built twenty years too late. Because of the stout construction it served as a visible reminder of the glory years in LA transit long after the PE elsewhere had been paved over and bulldozed out of existence. Several years ago it once agin was the center of attention, the city sought to sell the land under the tunnel approach and several addtional acres to a developer who proposed backfilling the tunnel to seal it forever and build seventy six condos on the site.

The normally lack luster LA preservation scene, known to blanch at the thought of taking on city hall politics, rose to the occasion, filing countersuits and seeking historic landmark status. An injunction was obtained that killed the conversion plans in their tracks. A decision is still pending over these law suits. In the meantime, volunteers have cleared weeds, trash, abandoned cars, and graffeti from the site and sprunced up a newly installed fence. LAPD assisted in removing the homeless encampments, hookers and drug dealers from the area, setting the foundation for a safe family oriented park as the ultimate goal.

A engineering study found that the invasive foundation could be removed and replaced should the need to use it as intended should ever arise, the cost to restore it rail service would be substainial however..

Ok keep good Pwolf, Ted, Rob, Lovedomes, Lars and all the gang...

Keep the encore's comming
