Good afternoon/evening Tom and all. I'll have one of those Bathams that is readily available.

Whewwwieeee...I think I see an open stool in all the confetti and party favors hanging about. Happy 1 Year Anniversary to you Tom and "OUR" placians. School has most of my time, and since the weather is getting warmer my 'puter time is getting smaller.

It's impossible for me to catch up with all the pages I've missed since my last visit so I'll try to do as much as I can to be caught up.

Tom, nice edition of the Gazette [tup][tup][tup][yeah]. The jokes were on par [:D]

BK. Nice pics of the ICE train. I took some pix of an ICE trainset when it was on tour here in the states. I can't remember where it was going, but since it was heading West, I guess it was on its way to California.

Page 302, over 6,000 postings and counting, plus I just received the "Book Relay" volume, "Trains." I would say that is a pretty darned good day , don't you agree Tom? I'll have one of those "Texas Tails" Pete was on about. The others, besides the brands Tom pictured earlier, all seem to have a peculiar tint suggesting potent consequences.[swg] Thanks Rob for the book, actually, the post wasn't all that bad from Ontario to Florida. I'll be sending it along to Pete in Jeff City a.s.a.p. I "cut away" earlier than usual so I could squeeze in one more reply before the day's end. CM3, there is such a reality conveyed with your memoirs that they always "ring" that proverbial nostalgic bell.[^] Great to hear from all who have consistantly made this thread work for so long. One might comment that a year isn't so very much compared to longer exisiting topical threads. I would reply to them: What about the quality, consistancy and contiuity not to mention the cordiality? 5 X [tup] Well, I have a long way to go for catching up from my ill fated absence.[V] Still, it can and will be done, only not as quickly as I would prefer. All the great pix on this day from so many quarters nearly puts Picture Posting Sundays to shame. But, afterall it is a very special occasion for everyone's enjoyment. For me personally, the excellent pix of the great steam era locos are the "jewels in the crown." Naturally, the fluted and smooth sided streamlined cars and domes are always a "standout."

I'm really looking forward to the "Rendezvous" in T.O. to meet up with Tom, Rob and Al and get some "hands on, real time" railroading and traction fun.[tup] I know Doug, Gunns, Rob, Dan and a few others working with the prototypes must take the "real thing" for granted. But for "armchairs" and modelers the protoypes are awesome. I've been scoping some maps of Toronto and can better appreciate just what a rail hub the city is, by today's standards.[tup] Can hardly wait for "touch down" at Pearson.

I just want to add that the year April 2005-2006 is one I would never wi***o repeat. However, "Our" Place was a much appreciated refuge which made even dire developments seem to disolve away. You may have been AWOL, but you still “have it” when it comes to providing honeset and relevant feedback![tup] I say “AWOL” because you WEREN’T given leave!![swg] However, we all understand and if not for the grace of God – there go we.

It truly has been quite a ride to this day and it seems like yesterday when we first conversed by E-mail regarding a “situation” elsewhere that you had the courage to openly discuss. The defensiveness, et al, in the responses pretty much convinced me to begin this Thread. The cyber bar ‘n grill “approach” was easy, in that I’ve always been comfortable in “environments” where the banter is good natured while getting some serious discussions underway.

So many have contributed – some now gone – others reduced to less than reliable and still others ready ‘n willing to pick up the slack. It truly does take “all kinds,” and that we have![tup]

Toronto in May seems almost dream-like in that it’s hard for me to finally say, “In less than a month, we’ll be enjoying all the things we’ve planned for!”[yeah]

Take the high road, my friend, and know that whenever you need to come up for air, there’s “this place” where the conversations flow, the drinks are plenty, the atmosphere friendly, and the characters absolutely without peer![tup]

Good Evening, everyone! Happy Anniversary to OUR PLACE. An idea to be different has blossomed into one of the best places on the web and the only one where I'll hang out. Tom, I would like a sample tray of all the specialty beers discussed previously.
A year ago, I was recovering from a job loss caused by a misdiagnosed health problem. I found refuge behind the double doors of a little bar next to the tracks where classic trains were the topic, beer was cold, and the company was(is) exceptional. Time and computer hijinks have not always allowed me to participate as often as I'd like, but amazingly, the welcome is still as warm as the first time.
The quality of the writing and depth of knowledge of the regulars around here are second to none. It has been said and I repeat, some of our regulars could write professionally. Word weavers, they are.
Tom, I liked those specialty beers but I believe I like something a little lighter. Set me up and surprise me. How about some Johnny Cash singing Rock Island Line on Herr Wurlitzer's creation. Makes me think about E6s and E8s. Happy Anniversary to OUR PLACE, Tom, its creator, and all of us who help keep this ship afloat!

I'm affraid to order the "Hammer" as I saw what the shed looked like after they tried to brew it. The Mentor villiage hazmat team still hasn't determined what it was or wasn't. I noticed several unmarked black cars suryeuing that mess as well [alien] So I think a round of "Awk's" for everyone. H&H have brought up their travelling scnitzel wagon and saurkraut vat so be warned, Mama Glockenspeils twice baked bean burittio's are only the appitizer [:O]

Nice to see the old first post Tom too nice idea, drag in the nostalgic to go along with the best edition of the gazette yet[tup] I do hope that you pull up your own permanent stool, it's the one with the gold plated hardware and the full back rest,only the best for the boss,the girls and I chipped in for it for you. You will notice that it has a back massager and heatimng unit in it as well,much better than your old briddge chair donchathink. Just think 4 weeks from now the four of us will be basking in the gloe of some good ole pub food ! Can't wait. Ok continuing my latest caboose theme, today's focus the Pacific Electric

During it's heyday the PE operated over eight hundered miles of freight lines and these freights were trailed br a motley collection of homebuilt and second hand hacks.

The most common were the former SP class CA1&2 of wooden construction, these were aquired when the SP deemed then too ancient to be worthy of rebuilding, in some cases they were equipped with archbar trucks and woodbeams long banned from interchange service and everywhere else the SP operated. Over two hundred and fifty comprised the two classes, making it the most common. A trait unique among the PE was the white painted ends for increased visibility. To add confusion, several pre C classes were rostered, they were refugees from the Central Pacific from before the turn of the century and true rolling antiques.

In 1938-40 ten sans cupola cabooses were built at the Torrance Shops, this allowed the retirement of a equal number of venerable examples, they were common to transfer runs that required the ability to be interchanged and survived the demise of the PE being eventually being incorporated into SP.

Five former D&RGW wooden hacks were also rostered, their unmistakeable high end cupola and forty foot length from their days as boxcars, was unlike anything rostred by the SP, they too survived until 1953 .

PE also had seventy two boxcar conversions, all from obsolote designs, the large doors were simply nailed open and a plank secured across the opening with a wooden ladder being installed to permit entry. Crews complained about the drafty and not too safe hole in the side. In response and to sooth the union ranks some, but not all were rebuilt yet again with new siding and a real door at the opening, some even had window glass installed!!! These were exclusive to the "rock trains" that orginated from the quarries along the Santa Ana river.

The final caboose purchases were nine former RF&P hacks aquired in 1950 for their cost of their scrap value. The Torrance shops closed before all could be rebuilt to PE standards so SP was contracted to complete the work, seems SP took a liking to these and purchased the lot from PE for far more then the orginal purchase price, eventually all were leasd back to the PE and these too survived abandoment and continued in local service on the SP in Southern California until the mid sixties.

It seems longer than a year since I discovered the Kalmbach website but the evidence is compelling.
I participated in the Coffe Shop dialogue for a few weeks without finding any particular `handle`-nobody seemed to be modelling Canadian outline and I didn`t sense any common ground behind the posts.
Then someone posted some shots of a Polar Express set running under the basement ceiling-of more immediate interest to me was the H.0. layout underneath on which I was sure I could see F40ph`s in VIA livery
Contact was established (sorry,been reading too many spy thrillers lately) and when a late-night stagger through the forums (fora.?)revealed the presence of our favourite tavern the die was cast.
[4:-)][oX)]TOM-I raise my hat to you sir,-Your happy combination of organisational skills,vivid imagination & secret delight in anarchy on a small scale has made this the only place to be on this forum........today the forums,tomorrow the stars..
Strange the odd bye-ways the mind takes-recently found a site all about the village where I grew up,was reminded of the huge party thrown to celebrate the 1300th anniversary back in `75-I was 15 & it was one of the hottest summers on record (superceded only by the following year ,during which I sat & failed the principal exams of our school system)....A definate `baby boom` blip on the charts was recorded that year..........Ahhhhhhhhhh.
Right,enough rambling-Those of you still sober enough to take notice will have observed the girls clearing the Buffet tables-we are about to re-stock so if you wouldn`t mind sliding over to the other end of the bar for a few minutes we can get set up

Hi gang...sounds like my kinda folks, mind if I join you for a cold one and impart a couple of examples? The WP had branches? Being sarcastic of course, the Reno branch and the Loyington branch. Chris this one is for you:

WP ran an excursion in conjunction with the 50th anniversy of the Nevada Northern. The special operated from Oakland CA. to the NN interchange at Cobre NV. where passengers boarded a steam powered NN special. A-B-B-A F7s from the freight pool along with a Zepherette provided the power (The Zepherette was removed at Cobre and continued on to Salt Lake on its regular run, talk about efficient power movement). The second set of CZ equiptment was tapped to provide a source for the domes, diner, and lounges along with heavyweight equiptment from the D&RGW .

There were two seperate excursions using 4-6-0 # 94 and 2-8-2 #34 from San Jose to Stockton in the late 50s.

So ok. Are there any additional WP excursions I have missed?

Well a happy good evening to you Sir Nick. I hope you noticed that H&H have been piling on the teutonic delights this evening as well. I figure with this crowd more food was better. I'm just hoping that some of their dishes haven't been around since the 1300's. [:O][xx(] Though for some strange reason I think Boris maybe from 1370 transylvania, I don't know why I think or know that I just do.

I'm trying to think what dragged me in here a year ago as well.I had been engaging Tom at the CS and then he started a well meaning Canadian Passenger train forum on the trains forum. that crashed and burned due to many an JO or AH depending on which bookend you talk to. Then Tom openned up shop here,I followed him over and voila one year of info with the right mix of hijinx and hilarity,not to mention all the friends made and those hopefully to make. Three more cheers to the barkeep,and a round of whatever for those in the bar.I'll be playing sax with sir Kramer this evening( yes I do play the alto sax, not well but when everyone is drunk it's all good )

I thought I’d stop in on my way home from work. This 5-8 stuff is really getting to me, so if you still have any of that Black Country Special Bitter that came in earlier today, I’d like a pint, please.

My, it must have been busy in here today, but then isn’t it supposed to be on an Anniversary, and the First is especially important. It’s always nice to meet new people at the bar. Ted, Don and Nick it was a pleasure! And, Nick, thanks for the micro brew. I liked that one!

And talking about beer, Pete I would have liked to try that H&H’s Hammer; please use a sturdier vat next time so we all can enjoy it! I also liked the picture you posted of the Sterling #1 engine. Those old engines have a special charm, don’t they? But it couldn’t have been easy on the crew when the weather was bad.

CM3, I really liked your article about the Rouses Point roundhouse. For some reason it brought back memories from a few (many?) years ago when the whole family visited Vermont and we stopped by in Brattleboro. I don’t know what it was, but that became vivid in my mind.

The ICE Train did go to Los Angeles, BK. I saw it there but was not allowed to climb on board that day, which was kind of strange since the X-2000 had been open to the public some time before. One little boy started to read on the train and said: “Dad, why is it called an ice train”? I asked a German friend what he thought of the Eis Zug being in US on an official visit. At first he didn’t understand what I meant, but when I explained it, I thought he was never going to stop laughing!

Lars (here I thought that was your first name, until I read one of your posts). I liked your pictures too, especially the one of CZ at the platform. All that smoke makes it look like a movie picture. The hero has just climbed on board and the train is leaving and his girl friend is wiping off the tears as she waves good bye. Oh, dear, getting all misty here. Bring another beer, please!

Tom posted some really good pictures also. The deer (or elk) waiting for the train to pass is priceless; or is he rail fanning, maybe? You can never tell when it comes to those Canadians, can you?

The PE has always been one of my favorites, Dave, ever since I read about them in an old Trains magazine. Too bad I came to Los Angeles too late to see them in action, but I have been to the Orange Empire Museum and soaked in all the good sites there. KCET (the PBS station in LA) had a program about what’s left of the main station in LA (under 7th and Hill). There is something left of the platforms and switch “tower”, but when they built one of the skyscrapers downtown, they just went through the tunnel and put the foundation right through it. No more trains through that tunnel.

And with that, and a warm Thank you to Russell for the nice welcome I am about to go home and hit the sack. I don’t think I ever told you guys, but I live in two places, Southern California (Tustin) and Dallas. The Dallas place is for work (I had to) and the Tustin place is where home is. I’m going out there tomorrow to see the family. I hope to be able to check in once or twice, but if not in time: Have a Happy Easter!

[:I] A kleptomaniac woman had been caught shoplifting in a supermarket and had to appear in court, taking along her long-suffering husband for marital support. The prosecution proved that the theft had taken place so the judge told her that, considering her record, he was forced to impose a jail term.
"This time you stole a can of tomatoes. There were six tomatoes in the can. Do you agree?" The woman agreed.
"Then I sentence you to six nights in jail."
The husband jumped to his feet, addressing the judge, "Your honor, may I approach the bench?"
"Well," said his honor, "this is somewhat unusual but I will make an exception in this case. You may approach the bench."
The husband wasted no time getting there and, leaning forward, he said in a low voice, "She also stole a can of peas." [:I]


[:I] Two good ole boys down in Alabama were sitting around talking one afternoon over a cold beer...After a while the 1st guy says to the 2nd, "If'n I was to sneak over to your trailer Saturday & make love to your wife while you was off huntin', and she got pregnant and had a baby, would that make us kin?"
The 2nd guy crooked his head sideways for a minute, scratched his head, and squinted his eyes thinking real hard about the question. Finally, he says, "Well, I don't know about kin, but it sure would make us even." [:I]


[:I] He ordered one hamburger, one order of french fries and one drink. The old man unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half. He placed one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counted out the french fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife.
He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them kept looking over and whispering. You could tell they were thinking, "That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them."
As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table. He politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said they were just fine - They were used to sharing everything. The surrounding people noticed the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said, No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything."
As the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked "What is it you are waiting for?"
"The Teeth," she answered [:I]

Good Morning Gents!

Another blue sky day emerging here in mid-Continent USA. We’re expecting temps in the high 80s today, which is about 20 degrees higher than the “norm” for this time of year. Crank up the A/C!![swg] Haven’t been out lately, but I hear Petrol has reached the $2.66 mark – and expected to continue on the rise. [banghead][censored]

So, what’s to say about yesterday and our 1st Year Anniversary Celebration other than FANTASTIC!! By my count, we had seventeen (17) individuals show up for the festivities, with the overwhelming majority providing multiple Posts. What a day! The total of 61 Posts established a new mark for daily Posts at ”Our” Place! Just a terrific turnout and well worth the effort.[tup][tup][tup]

As stated last night:

Finally, many THANX to those of you who made so many complimentary comments regarding my efforts in support of this Thread. A few of you go back to the early days and have stuck with it over the long haul. Many others have joined along the way. No matter – it’s YOUR support that keeps ME interested. It’s just that simple.[tup][tup][tup]


I see that Fergie (from the “Coffee Shop”) has stopped by along with Al (from the “tax preparation office!”)[swg] Good to see both.

I have my doubts that Fergie is really “into” what we ‘do’ here and ‘how’ we go about it, but figure the more time he spends over here, the sooner he’ll get the idea.[swg] He’s a great guy with a keen sense of humor and surely would “fit” quite well here. However, he too has a “life” – career CCG officer, family, interests, etc. So, “We takes what we gets!” (Popeye, circa unknown!)

Al I expect that YOU will be here for YOUR B’day Bash on the 18th! – YOU set the time as Noon to 4 PM (Pacific) which for me is 2 to 6 PM (Central). So, mark your calendars guys – another day to celebrate![yeah]

I think our “steamed” Proprietor summed it up quite well in his comments this morning – “What’s to say!” It was indeed a special event and a terrific turnout for the first year Anniversary of the bar! 17, huh[?] Well, that’s outstanding, truly a benchmark I’d say.

I can think of two guys who responded to my emails who did NOT show . . . surely was THEIR loss!

I’ve gone through the posts from page 300 thru where we are on page 303 and I’ll tell ya this – there’s all kinds of “substance” in most of them. The guys really were “into” the idea and it shows. Of course, as we entered the “night phase” and Nick emerged – well, then it was a PARTY![swg]


[soapbox] Want to say this and you can consider it for what it’s worth:

Many comments directed toward Tom and his efforts here were right on the money! Couldn’t have said it better meself![swg] Anyway, there always seems to be one or two who “gloss over” what he does here. I’m here to tell ya – if he wasn’t here – I wouldn’t be nor would the overwhelming majority! You are experiencing a “one of a kind” thread and when the time comes to board up the place, something will surely be missing from cyber space that I seriously doubt will be replaced in kind. So, when “generalizing” about this or that, try not to insult our boss by making gratuitous statements regarding the mundane – he deserves better than that!
