SP's Pacifics from the early 20's, two of which live on in San Francisco - 2467 and 2472.

Well, here's a question I hope is relevant to this thread: of all the restored steamers in excursion service today, why aren't the Pacific types represented? Virtually every wheel arrangement is under steam somewhere in the country, but I've never heard of a 4-6-2 that had been preserved, except as a static display. My favorite: a couple of Harriman UP Pacifics (#3221 & 3222) with Vanderbilt tenders used in local passenger service on the old Kansas Division until the end of steam operations. I only have a hazy childhood memory of steam locos on the KD (2 blocks from the house where I grew up), but I've seen the pictures and they're my idea of what an engine should look like.

Davews,There two 4-6-2s that have operated in recent years.I believe that both SP 2467,and 2472 are still active.I rode behind 2472 at the NRHS convention in San Jose in 1992, and saw 2467 under steam at the Sacramento railfair in 1999.

If you like small engines, how about the Forneys? I've got a two foot gauge one on order.
My favorite though is the PRR K4 Pacific.

I was wandering around in my favorite Fort Lauderdale hobby shop and stumbled on a Lionel O guage Heisler in Pickering Lumber Company dress that was extremely detailed for a toy train. Absolutely beautiful! I thought I had seen an early 1900s picture of it on the web, but when I checked it was the Mason Lumber Company of southern Mississippi.

Only problem was the price--$1600 for the engine and tender.

Short update: All About Toy Trains in Crystal River, FL has the Heisler for a thousand.

I fired alot of Baltimore and Ohio steam engines and I think the best was the 5500 and the 6100. I started as a fireman in 1956. Loved those steam engines.

To me no other steamlocomotive comes close Milwaukee Road's class A Hiawatha's.
They must have been a beautiful sight when new, well that goes for their F-7 Hudsons as well. Does anyone have a colour photo of a new A or F-7?? I could make a long list on this topic if you know what I mean.

My favorites are UP Big Boys, Challengers and SP Cab Forwards. Love SF, SP & UP 4-8-4's. Big steam for me!

my favourite was the Gresley V2 (Green Arrow)2-6-2.Used to fire them on passenger & frieght and were a dream to fire.My favourite US loco was the southern passenger pacifics.

I love the hand built ,with whatever was available, backwoods logging and mining locos. The ingenuity, and creativity were amazing. Locos, and railroads, built from little or nothing, without fancy facilities, or tools. They showed the real spirit and inventiveness of the pioneer.

Who can really choose? They are all great although the D&H Loree Consolidations were butt ugly beasts! The thing is to see them in context. Five SP cab forwards walking a long string of yellow reefers up the Sierra grade, magnificent. A Pennsy Mountain speeding over the Middle Division with empty coal hoppers in tow, tremendous. A Santa Fe Northern storming up Cajon Pass with the Chief. Can't be beat! Double headed Big Boys on Sherman Hill. Goes without saying. Get my point?

I am partial to the C&NW 4-6-0 R1 #1385 that is currently being rebuilt at Mid-Continent in North Freedom Wisconsin.

I rode behind it when I was a little kid, and my wife and I rode behind it the last year it was in operation. I hope they get it running again soon!

My favorite steam locomotive is the only one I ever saw in revenue service. I was about 2 years old in 1950/51 and have no idea what it was. However, my favorite photos of steam are of runty, old 0-4-0, 4-4-0 and 4-6-0 survivors in the 1950s. These were like the cockroaches of the dinasaur eras and some lasted until the 1980s, I think.

As for my favorite steam locomotives there are but three.

Great Northern class M2 2-6-8-0

Duluth Missabe & Iron Range class M1 2-8-8-2

Milwaukee Road class S2 4-8-4

Mind you now these are my favorites, but anything that belchs steam and coal/oil smoke tends to make me drool & giggle like Quasimoto !!

For balance, great sound, exceptionally great looks, nothing beats Frisco 1522! Until a couple years ago, you could ride behind it,too. Perhaps some day, she will once again grace the high iron with her presence, leaving mere mortals dumbfounded in her wake.

I enjoyed the NYC Hudson's,both streamline and non-streamline 4-6-4's.
