Good Morning Once again Captain Tom and Crew

Well time is coming close to our trip to Toronto and it looks like my last couple of days before our flight are booked solid with appointments and such.

Sorry Tom for the lengthy article. Realizing some of it was a tad long in the tooth the overall gist of the story is actually something one could change the names and would still describe all the Rise and Fall of Railways of the Maritimes. A sad state of affairs. The Railways here roam through some of the areas most picturesque spots. A real shame we've rid ourselves of these gems.

Eric: I can only imagine what it would be like to be at the throttle of a Run-away. Something I hope you have never had the mispleasure of experiencing. I'm glad you enjoyed the article.

Rob Excellent photos of the Museum! Much bigger then the one at Shearwater. The canablization of Machinary is truly a Canadian Thing. Saw it with the navy and their Oberons. Hopefully I won't see that in my organization. The Starfighter had anextremely small wing span and was basically a flying rocket! made a model or two of them when I was a youngster.

Nick: Thankyou for the pics of the steamers rather similiar to Thomas and Friends, which was always a favourite in this household.

Gunneral: Glad you enjoyed the article as well.

As for Boris's cooking... I told him once if I've told him a dozen times... Lighter Fluid is note required with a propane BBQBanged Head [banghead] Talk about "Smokies" Boy -o- boy....

Anyway gent's

have a good one

Page 30 - Eric <EricX2000> at 1:29 PM <11:29 AM Sandbox time>: Good to know that we can COUNT on our Sandman to help things during daylite ‘round here! Bow [bow] With Pete away, it's going to be a streeeeeeeeetch to keep us "up" . . .

Super-fine fotos from you - liked ‘em all, especially from North Freedom, WI - one day I'll have to drag my caboose up that-a-way! <grin> Previous comments apply to the Mountain Village Depot at nite time ‘n Boris' barbeque! <grin>

My high school love was a brunette - no, no - not black, but brunette! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Many thanx <again> for providing your day lite Post AND ROUND! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 30 - Nick <nickinwestwales> at 5:42 PM ‘n 8:06 PM <11:42 PM ‘n 2:06 AM Sunday GMT>:  Most welcome visits from our Resident Musician in Wales with some fine fotos, good chat ‘n cheer ‘n of course libations for all! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

All sorts of new stuff to peruse in those fotos - especially interested in that incline. Never saw anything like that before! Hmmmmmmm. Appears a lot of effort went into that stone marvel! Thumbs Up [tup]

Previous comments apply regarding some specifics - but always enjoy your narratives. Gotta read ‘em through TWICE in order to extract the "fullness" from ‘em! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] So, do I have this correct - you are residing in a house that once was a pub AND is still frequented by the ghost of the ProprietorQuestion [?] No wonder the horseshoe "thing" factors in! <grin>

HONESTLY, I do not worry about trips to the Doc - ‘n this year there have been far too many. Guess I'm just pragmatic about it all - I'm only concerned about things under my control - that I can deal with. The rest of it is life's crap shoot. Have one on me, Mate! Thumbs Up [tup]

Many thanx for the visits - makes for a much happier Pub when our man from Wales is on board! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 30 - Allan <Gunneral> at 10:08 PM <4:08 PM Sunday NZ DST>: There used to be a TV commercial some decades back where the "exit line" was "Better living through chemistry." That's kind of the way I sum up my day-to-day. Without the pharmaceuticals - who knows, eh Question [?]

I do "cheat" from time to time - especially when in the company of our Bar Chandler. So I throw caution to the wind now ‘n then, and imbibe - fully aware of the consequences ‘n always ready to own up to ‘em. Just the way it is . . . In my warped way of looking at whatever is left down the road - I'm surely NOT going to live my life in a bubble - for that's NOT living. ‘nuf said . . .

Thanx for the Saturday nite visit, chat ‘n ROUND! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Nice shots, all! Thumbs Up [tup]

Museum Members Night sounded like a good time with some fine "eats"! Dinner [dinner] Hope you went back for "seconds." <grin>

H&H have medical SKILLSQuestion [?] SKILLS! Are you kidding meQuestion [?] Those two would make the "butchers" of WWI look mild by comparison! <yikes> No, no - I already have my flu shot, so no need to use that squared off "horse" needle on me! <triple yikes>

To put to rest the "mystery" of the lake in Norway - here it IS: The 35 Sqn Halifax II, W1048 was recovered from Lake Hoklingen, Norway, in 1973.

TWO visits - TWO ROUNDS - lots of good stuff ‘n good cheer! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Sunday - October 5th:

Page 30 - Eric <EricX2000> at 1:27 AM <11:27 PM Saturday Sandbox time>: What got me to my knees in the yard was the non-starting chain saw! I completely wore myself out with that <censored> POS <you figure it out!> Finally just went out ‘n purchased a new one! <censored> I detest those <censored> MoSheens where the pull-start doesn't . . . Also picked up a replacement mower. So, the "coffers" are a bit lighter than when the day began. Just thankful there's someone helping this economy! <Moi!> Thumbs Down [tdn]

Then after the woesome nightmare with the chain saw, my chipper-shredder "decided" that jamming would be a fun-thing to do. That of course requires some disassembly of parts - which sad to say I've become well acquainted with. Oh, it was a lovely time of it! <barf> More to do on this day as well . . . fun in the back forty. <grin>

Not sure if we've Posted conflicting info regarding that RCAF Halifax in Norway . . . Hmmmmm.

On the day I took the trip up to Gaspé , the temps were in the 60s (F) - it was beautiful outside. That lighthouse is well maintained ‘n one of the few I've seen in wood - very, very nice. Would like to have been able to enter it . . . but hard to do from a moving train! <grin>

Ah, Seattle - a place where there's lots of memories for Moi. Was there for 7 weeks back in 1960 <Jan-Feb> - there again when Mt. St. Helens erupted on my B'day in 1980 - was also there for my 49th B'day. All just coincidences regarding my Natal Day - but just the way it worked out. Last visit was for our 5th wedding anniversary in 1996 . . . Yes, Seattle is a grand place to visit. Lovely when you can see the mountains - gloomy when overcast.

Thanx for the visit, fotos, chat ‘n ROUND! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 30 - Fergie <Fergmiester> at 7:11 AM 'n 8:44 AM <9:11 AM ' n 10:44 AM ADT>: And who to our bleary eyes should appear on this kick-back Sunday, but our MOST Irregular part-time FREE-SPIRIT Resident Canadian Maritime Mariner! Wow!! [wow]

Master-at-ArmsQuestion [?] HereQuestion [?] On SundayQuestion [?] In a CLOSED barQuestion [?] Hmmmmmm. Ain't no one ‘round but us "chickens" - so the song goes. Anyway, thanx for the B'day Post for Mr. Keith! Long live the authentic brew! Yeah!! [yeah]

Sad to say that Keiths has fallen under the umbrella of InBev and is no longer an independent brewer. First acquired by Labatt, then the internationalists got ‘em . . . Thumbs Down [tdn]

An Edit:

Listening to a couple of CD albums of Gordon Lightfoot whence I  picked up on your 2nd morning Post on this Sunday 'n appreciate your inclusive comments along with the "heads up" for your upcoming trip 'n absence from the bar. Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Your Epistle IS a good read - a very sobering reminder not only of the demise of railroading from your part of the continent, but for many others as well. <sad> Some very poignant material - many tragic accountings - but all part of the lore of railroading, ehQuestion [?]

One day - perhaps while I'm still above the ground - those with the "say so" will recognize the sins of the past 'n quickly restore the movement of goods 'n people along steel rails. It makes too much sense to NOT do it 'n do it NOW. <geesh>

Always enjoy your visits . . . 'n if there's no time for a follow-up, have a most enjoyable 'n safe trip to Ontario! Bow [bow] You DO have your Passports, ehQuestion [?] <grin>

"Our" Place is CLOSED on SUNDAYs

Starting TODAY at the Mentor Village Emporium Theatre!

. . . October 5th thru 11th: Green for Danger <1947> Starring: Sally Gray, Trevor Howard, Rosamund John, Alastair Sim & Leo Genn - and - ENCORE Presentation of Lost in Alaska <1952> Starring: Bud Abbott & Lou Costello.  SHORT: The Three Stooges - Jerks of All Trades <1949>.

<Note: Lost in Alaska first shown Sunday Mar 5th thru 11th, 2006>

Green for Danger <1947>

PLOT SUMMARY:

In the midst of Nazi air raids a postman dies on the operating table at a rural English hospital. But was the death accidental? A delightful and wholly unexpected murder mystery British writer/director Sidney Gilliat's Green for Danger features Trevor Howard and Sally Gray as suspected doctors and Alastair Sim in a marvelous turn as Scotland Yard's insouciant Inspector Cockrill.

<from: amazon.com>

Lost in Alaska <1952>

PLOT SUMMARY:

Leave it to Lou to get into trouble with a piece of Whale meat. This film is uneven mostly because some of the gags are repeated too often. The boomerang episodes are one example; Lou's sinking for the third time is another. On the plus side there are times when the humor is right off the wall. Lou's attempt to save Tom Ewell is one. His encounter with the Alaskan Crabs is a riot. The incident with the Eskimo Medicine man is a replay of a scene with the Monster from the boys' meeting with Frankenstein but it's just as fresh as the first time. It's easy to imagine that the guy playing the witch doctor had just as much trouble getting through this scene as Glenn Strange did the first time around.

<from: amazon.com>

SHORT: Jerks of All Trades <1949>

PLOT SUMMARY:

Moe, Larry and Shemp are three bumbling interior decorators who manage to trash their clients' homes.

Good evening all , I too will raise a toast to Alexander Keith ( along with many an other person(s) accross the country today ) A supprisingly active Sunday here nice to see actually Thumbs Up [tup]I note that Boris and Leon have returned from their normal Sunday trip upto the gorge , looks like many a critter has come back with them to be stewed.Shock [:O]

Tom-Couple good flicks for the Emporium this week , thanks for providing the extra info and wiki link to that other Halifax Thumbs Up [tup] Seems to be lots of neat stuff at the bottom of Norwegian Lakes.Glad you liked the photo's.

Well you know the "girls" they are used to tending to Boris and his kins injuries, they just figure the rest of us can handle the same type of "gentil" ministrations. Shock [:O]

Funny how we all seem to be attracted to Brunettes,I'm married to one, and most of my high school and after sweeties were of the same variety as well.

Eric-Thanks for finding the Lake.Looks pretty close to the Swedish border.Yes teh Starfighters were not an easy aircraft to fly and tended to react poorly to mistakes. They also had the unfortunate tendency to bend their tails at take off which normally ended up in and ejection and a destroyed aircraft, and more often than not a dead or badly wounded pilot.

Fergie-A fine tribute to the beer master Thumbs Up [tup]Keith and his history are an inteersting read. know that when Heather and I were in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland last year we enjoyed our tour and samples at the Keith Brewery.I do hope the Coast Guard is not forced into the kind of Canibilization the navy, and even army have done to equipment to keep things runnning.

Well looks as though most of teh paerwork is squared away,so I'll see everyone tomorrow.

G'day Gents!

Monday has rolled ‘round once again - the 1st one in this month of October <Oktober>! Thumbs Up [tup]

That aroma is our freshly ground ‘n brewed coffee mixed with the arrival of pastries for The Mentor Village Bakery case! <aaaaaaaahhhh> Why not imbibe with usQuestion [?] Check out our Menu Board while you're at it for the featured <light> ‘n <traditional> breakfasts! Bow [bow]

I finally broke my self-imposed boycott of NFL games 'n watched the Steelers game last nite. A good one to select. Thumbs Up [tup]

Still can't stand the appearance of some of those guys and the unwillingness of the league to enforce uniform standards. It's pretty much that way throughout pro-sports. So why call it "uniform"Question [?] Just don't understand these "statements" being made by guys who are being PAID very well to play the game and supposedly toe-the-line when it comes to the "standards." <barf>

Also had the Red Sox on the split screen - another good choice, but not for the Beantowners. Today's another day . . .

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox. My apologies for not posting sooner but the installation crew showed up this a.m. to finish work in my area so I was "homeless" for awhile. Enjoyable sports weekend for the football folks; alma mater defeated Auburn in a most interesting match and (for Lars) our Jints won again. I did not stay up to see the end of the Red Sox game last night - IMHO several of them need to head for medical repairs; Mike Lowell in particular.

Allan was by with comments.

Eric - I'll check on the headlight situation on the 2-8-4s for you. The C&O was good to move appliances around on their locomotives. In addition, there were some variations in their "as-built" format as well. Thanks you for sending the car detail pictures. They loaded fine although some of the other ones did not.

Fergie - Downloaded and saved the CN material. Family connections count for a lot. I have an ancestor who worked for the Fitchburg RR; even after it became part of the B&M, he always was a "Fitchburg" man.

Rob has been in with planes, trains, and no automobiles. IIRC, F80 was the Shooting Star and F86 the Saber (at least in the USAF). There is a fine sample of an F80 along I-90 westbound in PA right before you get to where 79 ties in. The F104 was, indeed, a handful of airplane. The M420 was one of my favorites - thanks for sending the picture.

Nick - A gracious good morning (well it is here) - thanks for the pictures. Enjoyed your comments re blacksmiths. There is a large statue of Vulcan in Birmingham, Alabama. Since we share mining material every now and then, the first two buildings to become operational when a mine was developed around here back in the day were usually the sawmill and the blacksmith shop.

OSP - Enjoyed the SP&S items and MOT material. Glad to hear that the pill pushes deemed you good for another 50K (No, Boris - miles; not the bill). I detected a small typo in the remarks about H&H triage - I think you meant Florence Nightinjail.

Work safe

G'day Gents!

This "enabling" Post comes as a result of Shane's visit this morning - the first of the day. Thumbs Up [tup] Florence night-in-jail, ehQuestion [?] Hmmmmm. Probably a sailor or three has spent a nite in the lockup over the affections of a Florence, Flo, Flora or . . . . <grin>

SPECIAL for NICK: Your fone number has been passed to Pete - confirmed by Mrs. Wolfman yesterday <Sunday>.

‘nuf of that . . . here's something NEW for our Bar by the Ballast!

Now Arriving on Track #3

Classic Steam Locos

Number Two - Santa Fe 2-10-2

This 2-10-2 locomotive is a Pennsylvania Railroad class N1s. Note the way the trailing truck allows a larger, deeper firebox than that of a 2-10-0. <from: Wikipedia.com - Public Domain>

ATSF 2-10-2 #3860/troop train, 1943 <courtesy: www.yesteryeardepot.com - foto: Fred C. Stoes>

The 2-10-2 type was a direct lineal descendant of the decapod 2-10-0. Application of the rear trailer truck was more for guiding than for support of the firebox. To provide a pair of guiding wheels for a decapod in reverse motion, a new class of locomotive was developed for helper service over Raton and Cajon pass.

Assisting heavy freight trains up hill, the natural procedure was to simply back down the hill for the next up-grade train. A locomotive that could travel equally well in either direction dictated that the decapod 2-10-2 with a two wheel trailing truck added should be named after the road that developed this configuration. Hence the Santa Fe was born on the road of its name sake.

Well good evening all and blessings upon this fine house..Approve [^]..

Leon-Lets continue the theme here and have a round of foaming steins how about some Dortmunder bier tonight-I understand they win awards with it (not sure what for though.......)

O.K:-quick bookmark,then browsing,then back with responses...

Couple of quick points before I forget-one for the etherial presence of PETE (just in case)--R.E-Kings,have done some checking and as far as I can discover (G.W ALAN may know more here) were all allocated to either Old Oak,Laira or Stafford rd (W/Hampton) for use between Padd. & Plymouth and Birkenhead-until Laira dieselised in about 62-3

Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-A couple here-1st, further to the vexed question of couplers,as SHANE pointed out weighting is a good step forward-I try to adhere to NMRA standards on this (although, perhaps ironically,M/Power 51` hoppers have proved the hardest to do-splitting the cylinders is a royal pain in the Eng. Dept)-also wheelsets-ideally,we would all be using machined metal sets in brass hat bearing cups....back in the real world.....plastic wheels on metal axles are tolerable but the real rat in the soup-pan is the all plastic sets-any slight distortion will transmit to the coupler with fulcrum like effects-not so bad with body-mounts,but still noticeable-I am sure this is all well known to you but I mention it for completeness....

2nd-Spotted an add in the M.R for the latest Walthers proto 1k subway cars-grey with blue stripe-looked quite elegant-again I am sure I am preaching to the choir here, but are a number of easy-install circuits for multiple trains on single tracks-3 rail breaks and a half hour of quiet cussing.............just thinking aloud you understand  Whistling [:-^]

Right then-off to see whats new, back soon

Good afternoon Captain Toma and Gentlemen!!

Hi Ruth, glad to see you are still here! Yes, a ham sandwich, please! A Gold, that's correct! Yes, I know! No, we better not tell anyone.

It seems to be quiet, but I guess a lot of people are taking it easy after the first weekend of the Oktoberfest! The Second Class Saloon was almost demolished Saturday night.

Fergie –  A very belated Happy Birthday to Alexander Keith! Some time since he passed away. I have a feeling that you like what he left behind!Wink [;)]

No, I have never been in that situation, being in a cab of a runaway train.Smile [:)] Except in a dream I used to have every now and then.

Tom –  North Freedom is well worth a visit! I’ve been there a number of times, it is close to Baraboo where I have friends.Smile [:)]

A brown-hair brunette? Not bad!Wow!! [wow]

Chain saws can be tricky. I even cut my knee once with a chain saw.Oops [oops] I survived and still have the same knee. What did you do? Cut down all the trees in the back?Question [?]

I agree, I like Seattle too.Smile [:)] Maybe a little bit too much rain, but it is a nice city. I haven’t been there since 1993.

Interesting movies at the Emporium this week. Green for Danger. It’s new for me even though it is an old film. Lost in Alaska, first I thought it was about your adventures there! Is it?Whistling [:-^] Hmmm.

The Santa Fe 2-10-2 is a very good looking locomotive! Santa Fe had 342 locomotives of that type. The last one is service was Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 514, built by Brooks and it powered an excursion train September 29, 1962.Smile [:)]

Rob –  The lake Mjøsa is not far from Sweden. I have been driving by there a number of times. Beautiful area. But I didn’t know anything about what was hidden in that lake.Smile [:)] I am gald they saved that bomber and now have fixed it so it is on display.

Thanks for the info on the Starfighter!Thumbs Up [tup]

CM3 –  Thank you in advance for looking in to the question about the headlight!Smile [:)]
What pictures did not load okay?

I didn't see this car at the MoT this year.

Round for the house!

Eric

PS. I didn't see you Nick! Where were you hiding?

Well well, plenty of good meat to chew on there-Leon,I think we need more beer to wash it all down with-and some quarters here for the ever compliant Herr Wurlitzer who tonight will be giving us a selection from the Stephan Grappelli/Django Reinhart quintet,at their fluid and thrilling best...................with perhaps a brief masterclass interlude from Senor Segovia, just for the purists..

Right then-Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-Appreciate that my prose may require a 2nd reading-suspect this is due to an abandonment of basic grammer & punctuation as the evening progresses-my apologies Ashamed [*^_^*]-Panama Engine-many thanks for pointing out (gently) what I should have read first time around.........a fascinating piece of technology Thumbs Up [tup]..Now-yard work-1st off, full marks for getting the job done Thumbs Up [tup]-Would I be way off beam in suggesting that 2-stroke chain-saws need draining of vital fluids when not in regular use and the spark plugs need regular de-gunking,likewise shredders need cleaning out of accumulated debris to avoid overloading motors-grandmothers and egg-sucking here I realise but as I make a fair proportion of my spendies in this field............Santa-Fe`s-Have a lovely book of prints by a guy named Wendell Folkins (one for the next relay BTW) one of which shows a C.N S/F lifting a night time freight out of Bathurst yd in To-you can feel the power being displaced......Approve [^]--Welsh Incline-these were quite common back in the day-are quite a few passenger ones,I believe the technical term is a funicular-the freight ones are free to run-the weight of the loaded wagons lifts the empties, the passenger versions achieve the same effect by means of water tanks underneath the cars-ballast basically....3 Horseshoes -Yes indeed, according to the 1843 O.S map our house was the pub....Apparently what is now the garage in front of #1 was the butchers,#1 was the abbatoir,#2 was the slaughtermans cottage, our house and #4 were the pub and associated dwelling and #5 was one dwelling and it`s shed another-I suspect that my workshop was the beer store-by 1900 the whole terrace was private dwellings and my workshop was the bath-house for the street..how times change............Movies-anything with Alaister Sim & Trevor Howard is good with me-remember him & Celia Johnson in `Brief Encounter`?....Enjoyed the monday smile........One to be argued about-should a downed plane be regarded as a war grave and left alone............

ALLAN-Wilko(bless him) is always going to be a target-especially when they build a team around him....Poor start to the EDF-all the druid teams got wins(more by luck than skill in a couple of cases) -still,Heineken cup starts soon-then we shall see.......casting back a few days, agree Gresley coaches don`t look right in C/C.......

ROB-Delighted the Museum B-B-Q night was a success-Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]-interesting notes on Lancs,Mancs,Halifaxes etc.....also fine pix-am halfway sure that F40 is the one that Walthers modelled (and I have upstairs).....

ERIC-#57 is indeed a full sized engine-believe it to be a Rolls-Royce powered Sentinel shunter-before taking on diesel power,B.R invited tenders from all the established builders for various sizes of engine-this was one of those-will look up the stats when I have a moment......further to your `Halifax` notes-Rootes were a major supplier of auto parts during the 60`s-another fallen flag now...Thumbs Down [tdn]---The reason you didn`t see me earlier is cos I was out in the galley, stocktaking (an evil neccessity..)

FERGIE-Happy B-Day [bday] To Mr Keith-the only other Keith who looks 213 years old is the guitarist with a popular South London beat group......If Thomas is a big draw in your house, would recommend a quick internet search-there are a couple of sites out there that give the full spec on all of Wilbert Awdry`s various models etc-fascinating stuff for fans (I am one BTW.....Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg])...Enjoy your trip to the big bad city.........

SHANE-What ho there-Smile [:)]-makes perfect sense-first build the means to build everything else, then build everything else...........AHHH-Dear Florence-she made a man out of me (have always wondered what she did with the left over bits & pieces)

O.K chaps-work tomorrow (many books to pack..) will try and check in tomorrow night-be good, sleep well

<VIA Rail's Renaissance coach interior - personal foto>

G'day Gents!

A most disappointing daylite portion of the day - but gratified to see Eric 'n Nick pick up the slack as the sun headed for the horizon - many thanx! Thumbs Up [tup]

I'll withhold specifics for the 'morrow's round of Acknowledgments. However, a few comments are in order. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Eric - use of chainsaw involves getting rid of lots of deadwood from the dozens of trees in our back forty, including the wooded common ground. Much left from the ice storms of Jan 2007 . . . just kept putting it off. Then spring of 2008 was soooooo wet - then the summer had me spending far too much time with the Docs - then . . . . anway, just finally got A-ROUNDTUIT! <grin>

Nick - you are absolutely spot on regarding the care one must provide when maintaining a chain saw. The one I had been using <10 plus years> was most unreliable pretty much from the get-go. Being a very infrequent user, I was willing to put up with the <crap> of difficult starting - resorting to starting fluid <ether> to get the <censored> thing to work. And yes, I always ensured that during winter, the tank was run dry - oil changed, etc. It just was a rather expensive POS that is now destined to the trash heap come this week's pick up. New one is working the way it should. <phew>

Jamming chipper-shredder due to my impatience - overloaded it 'n paid the price - THREE times. <geesh> Some people never learn, eh Question [?] <grin>

Eric - next time I'm at the StL MoT, I'll make a point to look for that MoPac car. Hmmmm, come to think of it, Pete 'n I didn't see it last month - but, we really weren't looking for it either.

Nick - oh how I'd luv to add those modern subway cars to the Can-Cam Subway System <CACSS>. HOWEVER, enuf is enuf! <geesh> The two sets of older models are running fine 'n "do the trick" insofar as achieving what I had in mind. And, I had to make rail cuts in each oval of track in order to get my "pause" devices <intermittent stops> to work properly at the station. It all seems to be operating 4.0 - 'n hopefully one day, you'll be able to view it with me <and perhaps a couple of others from the bar> at a Rendezvous! Yeah!! [yeah]

Again - there's more to come in the AM Acknowldgments . . .

Have a good nite! And, Boris, ring the bell - Da Bossman is springing for a ROUND! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Hi Tom and all,

Leon, the usual round of Tui`s for all the guys` please.Yeah!! [yeah]

Rob. The RCAF museum site is a very interesting place with all the photos` and info on all the planes. Some fine shots from your photo collection.Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

Eric. The birds that fly down from Siberia are Godwits, I think?Confused [%-)] You are really lucky to have that kind of grass that you do`nt have to mow in the winter. Nice link the the Halifax bomber that Rob informed us of.Approve [^] Nice shot of that observation car tail.Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

Fergie. Good memorial birthday wish for Alexander Keith the namesake of your favourite brew.Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

CM3. Good to see you sir.Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

Nick. I agree with you about poor Wilko, he is always targeted for special treatment by the opposing players`as he is such a game winner, his recurring shoulder problem was caused by the Aussie player Smith in that World Rugby Cup final that England won. Looks as if the Druids teams have improved a lot with a bit of Kiwi coaching.Wink [;)]Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

Pete. Hows the old country going mate?Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

Tom. Some of those chemicals that we take sure do a great job do`nt they?Thumbs Up [tup] Could`nt make it on site yesterday, had to take a trip to Napier again at short notice, so it put everything out of kilter for the day.Yeah!! [yeah]

<In for my modest hardcover RR book library!>

G'day Gents!

And Tuesday once again. Not much to add to that, ehQuestion [?] So, let's make the best of it by filling up those coffee mugs, enjoy our freshly baked pastries ‘n order a <light> or <traditional> breakfast! Galley crew is waiting . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

Petrol was $3.36 <rounded> yesterday - weather was almost summer-like, but expected to change as a front has moved in. Should be seeing some rain ‘n more fall-like temps. Trees are now beginning to show the change of seasons - some are hanging in, but the colors are there. Thumbs Up [tup]

Comments from the Proprietor

Sure could use a little HELP 'round here during daylite hours . . .

It's "You Post, I Post" at the Bar by the Ballast! Thumbs Up [tup]

Customer Acknowledgments (since my last narrative):

Monday - October 6th <all times Central daylite>:

Page 31 - CM3 Shane <coalminer3> at 10:30 AM <11:30 AM EDT>:  BoSox advanced! Thumbs Up [tup] Was there any doubtQuestion [?] There's still a chance of a Dodgers-Red Sox WS, which would be the only reason I'd watch it this year . . .

Undoubtedly Lars is enjoying the fine start for the NFL Giants. Kinda proves that last year was certainly no fluke. Also think he's in a deep-snit over the Mets collapse <again>, but the foo-ball season has probably soothed that sting by now.

I stayed with the BoSox Sunday game ‘til the 12th inning ending . . . glad to see the Angels broke the "streak." Both teams had many opportunities, but I was impressed with the Angels pitching ‘n not permitting that 3-run single to ruin their night. <geesh>

When I think of Saber jets, I think of the Korean war <aka: police action>.

Amazon.com notified me that "the book" will ship on Oct 14th . . . moved up!

Previously commented on Florence! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thanx for the visit, chat, quarters ‘n ROUND! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 31 - Nick <nickinwestwales> at 5:01 PM <11:01 PM GMT>: Methinks you are far more the modeler than I. NMRA standards at that! Wow!! [wow] I pretty much do as needed to keep ‘em rollin' to my satisfaction. Once that level is attained, to blazes with NMRA. <grin> Sorry.

Probably shouldn't let it die there - I've had experiences over the years with that organization which have turned me "off." Not answering correspondence, being just one <before there was Email>. Also never really cared to the "attitudes" on the part of some at model RR shows where "they" came across far too omnipotent for my humble tastes. <barf> Don't like to indict the entire organization, though. For I'm sure there are some fine, well meaning folks involved with it . . . ‘nuf said.

On couplers - I try to use body mounted when possible, especially with passenger cars. Converted my ConCor fleet of VIA Rail corrugated beauties ‘n they've operated much better-er since. Good advice with the wheel sets too. I've purchased metal wheel sets ‘n one of these days <daze> will set out to convert my rolling stock. One of these days <daze> . . . <grin>

Thanx for the ROUND ‘n "bookmark" - as always, THAT's the WAY to DO IT! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 31 - Eric <EricX2000> at 5:02 PM <3:02 PM Sandbox time>: Didn't catch your Post ‘till it was dark ‘round here. Kinda gave up on the daylite portion, as I had other things going on aside from checking to see if anyone gave a Rat's Patoot about us.

Do appreciate your visit ‘n effort in helping to keep things "on top" at our Saloon by the Siding! Bow [bow]

The Second Class Saloon was almost demolishedQuestion [?] How do you KNOWQuestion [?] Hmmmmmm. Not frequenting the competition are you Question [?] OR is that brunette of yours <the one from Hooters> singing her Siren's Song to you from thereQuestion [?] Hmmmmmmm.

No, I've never been lost in Alaska! <grin> It's a huge piece of real estate ‘n not one where one would ever want to get too far from the beaten track . . . Also some beasts that eat meat lurking in the brush ‘n up in the ice. <yikes>

Not hard to figure out why Seattle is referred to as the Emerald City. An absolutely beautiful place WHEN the sun shines. No kidding about this - for the 7 weeks that I was there during Jan ‘n Feb in 1960 - I didn't see the sun even ONCE. That definitely can make one depressed . . . although I was having the time of my life as a young, single sailor with far too many "distractions" to keep my occupied than to worry about sunshine. <grin>

Concur, those 2-10-2 Santa Fe locos are impressive MoSheens! Thumbs Up [tup]

Many thanx for your visit, chat, foto ‘n ROUND! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 31 - Nick <nickinwestwales> at 6:58 PM <12:58 PM Tuesday GMT>: Back with Part Deux ‘n in typical Nick-style, lots to mull through . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

More on the chainsaw <previously addressed> - I probably spent as much in trying to get that POS to operate properly than it originally cost. But, as an infrequent user - every other year perhaps over a 10 plus year span, just seemed pointless to get a new one. Until this past weekend, that is! Frustration reached the boiling point - case closed.

Honestly never appreciated the beauty ‘n majesty of steam locomotives until being associated with those of you who do. Really has opened up a new chapter in my railroading interests <not to mention opening up the wallet as well!>. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Aside from perhaps residing in a former rail station, I'd say a pub would be my 2nd choice! <grin> Thanx for the elaboration . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

Also the info on the incline is appreciated as well. Always something to learn ‘round here. Quality info along with good cheer, how can one go wrong at "Our" Place,eh Question [?] Some just never get it. Their loss . . .

I definitely think that the final resting place for downed aircraft <undiscovered for ages> along with sunken ships, should be left as is. Bothered me to no end when the "rape" of the Titanic began . . .  still does. When it comes to the tombs of our fighting men, that's an inner outrage that doesn't take much to surface. Ask me how I really feel . . . <grimace>

As fine an < I3 > Post as you've ever put together ‘n our small group of regulars appreciates it along with the ROUND! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 31 - Allan <Gunneral> at 8:31 PM <2:31 PM Tuesday NZ DST>: What Ho! Our Resident Downunder Boom-boom Kiwi has found his way to the bar! Bow [bow] Pays to leave the doors unlocked! <grin>

Apologies unnecessary, we do what we can when time permits. And there's no doubt that you give a Rat's Patoot about this joint. Bow [bow]

Just curious - do you recall EVERY movie shown during your tenure as a projectionistQuestion [?] I'll bet you do . . . kinda like a musician recalling each performance. Wondering . . . I've really enjoyed watching films the 2nd or 3rd times - so much missed during the 1st showing. I never did that until meeting my bride - she's gotten me hooked on movies, big time. Before 1990, I was a very sporadic movie watcher - probably visited the theatre only on rare occasions. Then all of a sudden is was like a curtain was raised <appropriate, eh?>. Nice way to pass a few hours . . .

Thanx for the visit, chat ‘n ROUND! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

jukebox. Gonna be another lovely day here today but it may rain later this week (all forecasts disagree, so we'll send out the K9 Korps - he comes in wet, we know what to do. Gas is $3.59 here today.

Two grinding nights of baseball but at least the Bostons are in and continuing. So we will have two AL East teams competing - let's just say that they don't like each other; it should be an interesting series. Even though the Cards didn't make it, I'm sure that they're not unhappy over the Kubz Kollapse.

Nick was in with comments and history. As a map person, I truly appreciate your comments - it's always interesting to see what used to be around. Back years ago much of western New York was mapped and photographed from the air (have a friend who used to do that) - my wife found a picture of the home place and had in enlarged to 11x17 - amazing how much more wooded it is today. Of course, there are a few more houses in the area, but not as many as you might think. Unfortunately the railroad is abandoned but you can still find the ROW and the tracks if you know where to look, especially after the leaves are off the trees.

Eric - IIRC it was the third and 4th pictures - the other ones came through fine. Went and did some more looking at C&O headlights. There were four orders for 2-8-4s: some were built by Alco and others by Lima. The headlights were all set low as usual C&O style. I carefully looked at about 20 different 2-8-4s in the book C&O Power. Some had the "twin" bulbs on the one at MOT and others had what looked like a single bulb. Then I started looking at Pere Marquette 2-8-4s (just like OSPs Polar Express engine). The headlights were placed differently (on the smokebox). The engines were absorbed into the C&O fleet and r# after the C&O absorbed the PM in about 1948, IIRC. So that's where we are right now - will keep looking.

Allan was in with comments and avian observations. We have a flock of approximately 100 Canadas on the grassy oval in front of the Post Office every a.m. when I go to pick up my mail. Lovely birds, but the output is phenomenal. We also have a bunch around the ponds near my workplace. Our location is between two flyways so the exotics we get around here are usually blown off course by storms or just "passing through" on their way to other places.

OSP - I have a mower like your former chainsaw - runs great when it wants to do so; most of the time it's a shop queen. Nice write up on the 2-10-2s, aka "mudsuckers" on the B&M. The interior of the coach that you sent along kinda resembles the planes that United Express used to fly between Charleston and Chicago.

Work safe

Morning Ruth.Lets see a number three and a large thermos of the "extra warm" coffee , yes Boris I'll have a spiked oj as well.Woke upto the first frost of the year today ( very light one ) and a 0C temp over night, warming up to a bright sunny 17C today 20 tomorrow.the colours are good on the trees. Not too many of the beautifull reds this year though Sad [:(] Sigh [sigh] Still on the upside the ags prices plummeted over night along with the temp to a still untolerable $1.04 a litre.

Tom-Great info on the Sante fe types.I believe one of the CN ones is on display at the Steam and Tech Museum in Ottawa.there may be one in Delson as well ( not sure ) I have a feeling that Shane's right about which "Florence" H&H were emulating,I see also that you may have met her once or twice when you were still at sea.Whistling [:-^]

Nothing for me to watch spotrtwise till later this week when the NHL pulls itsell out of pre- season mode and the games start counting.]tup]

I'm with you when it comes to war graves and wrecks in general leave them be.At least in teh case of the Halifax puled from the lake though some of the crew were killed all the bodies were recovered at the time of the downing so in my way of thinking this is a salvage o. Whereas removal of artifacts from something like the Titanic or lets say for arguement the Wreck of the USS Maine or Azirona is tantamount to disrespectfull grave robbing,so is excavating Egyptian tombs of pharohs in my oppinion as well. A thin line I suppose it just PO's me howmany people cross it in the name of science.SoapBox [soapbox]

Eric-I like that Mopac car hopefully it was just moved for repair work, sounds like the lake in Norway is in a nice rugged part of the country, the way you describe the area it sounds just like NorthWestern Ontario.

Shane-Yes your right , I got my "F's" transposed.Though in my defence the F80's called T33 shooting stars up here were always used as a training aircraft ( the few fliable ones still are )I never liked the Sabre's they just didn't do it for me,although the RCAF / CAF certainly flew a ton of them over the years as well, again manufactured in Montreal by Canadair.

Nick-You might be right about that F40,I've never checked the number that closely on the Walthers one.Funny thing proto put out a couple GP9's which I have photo'ed around Ontario quite often over the years as well.Odd coincidences only I suppose.

Great thoughts on couplers trucks and waieghting thrown around by you and Tom as well. The only thing I'll add is that metal wheelsets are the way to go , espeacially if you have some climate control problems in the layout area, the metal wheels tend to help keep the "grungies" of the rail heads, not pick it up and spread it around like the plastic wheel treads do,run a hobby knife lightly around ( don't cut into it ) the tread of a plastic wheel and see the stuff that comes off.Shock [:O]

I had to giggle a bit when you mentioned the pole vault effect with the plastic  axle / wheel combo's. Many years ago a good friend of mine brought out to the club a sixty car coal trains, all Stewart 70 tonners in the various Chessie letterings. { he had lettered decalled all of them great job ) pulled by three Kato Chessie SD40's. In his wisdom he put live coal loads in all of them which was fine but made for a very heavy train, one with predominantly plastic wheel plastic axle wheels sets under them. You can imagine the effect of this weight on those wheel sets,Tow complete traverses of the layout ( two level job with climbs upto the top level instead of helixes all percent and a half )He was comming into the main yard when they did their thing on the custom built double slip #10 crossovers cars and coal were everywhere,I think they are still picking bits of woodland sceneic coal product out of that part of the layout.

Allan-Nice to see yo make it in again last night,I would have been in my self but the forum sign on software had other idea's <grumble>

Shane-Good morning to you today sir.The Canada's I must say area  nuisence bird. There are some around here year round now as soem don't even bother to head south.Shows howmany birdfeeders etc are around.I read a newspaper article last summer on the state of Toronto's lake Ontario public beaches. Many still get closed for much or part of the swimmimg season due to bacteria counts etc. They have found that most of the ecoli etc is contributed now by the vast flocks of Canada's that plague the beachfront not the water treatment plants or strom drains from the city. Time for a hunting seson I'm thinking, one way of feeding the homeless I suppose.

G'day Gents!

Some on the spot Acknowledgments for our two morning customers - Shane 'n Rob! Bow [bow]

Page 31 - CM3 Shane <coalminer3> at 8:14 AM <9:14 AM EDT>: Figured you'd be pleased with the success of your BoSox . . . I know lots of Cards fans pretty much expected the Cubs to fold the tent even BEFORE the end of the season. What's that they say - Completely Useless By SeptemberQuestion [?] <grin> Anyway, Red Sox are just an awesome bunch who should NEVER be written offf . . . or is that nevAHQuestion [?] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Rains have arrived along with a modest dip in temps - nothing severe expected, just some wet 'til mid-day tomorrow. Petrol supposedly has dipped to BELOW $3.20 <rounded> in some places, as the price drops are now coming in increments of 5 cents or greater - haven't been out since yesterday morning, but have a day trip on Thursday. We'll see . . .

Simply amazes me regarding the 'eye for detail' you have. I couldn't explain the location of the headlight on my Polar Express Berkshire much less the headlights on my Volvo! <geesh> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Canada Geese are a plague on the wing in these parts 'n have been so for many decades. There are so many of 'em that the FAA has set up . . . . nah, never mind! <grin> It is nice to hear the wings flapping as they make their way from pond to pond in our area - it's the "eh" that get's me instead of "honk." Approve [^]

I must say that the Renaissance coaches I've experienced were very comfortable with fine views from their large windows. I always "book" bedroom - but since there were no domes in the consist, the traincrew permitted bedroom passengers the use of coach on a space avail basis. Again, no complaints - they are well done 'n ride nice. Just prefer the Budds - always will. Biased comes to mind! <grin>

Appears the beginning of your Post was partially devoured by a Great White Gremlin - so, I'm guessing you DID buy a ROUND 'n offer up some quarters! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 31 - Rob <trolleyboy> at 9:04 AM <10:04 AM EDT>: Yeah, I'm pretty much looking forward to the start-up for the Blues - they open up on this Friday. Kinda strange with this staggered start. BUT, what's new, it is the Garage League afterall. <geesh>

Almost caved in to temptation for a purchase of a mini-season ticket set for us. However, practicality overrode that idea. Our ONLY major link between here 'n downtown has been CLOSED since Jan 1st for major rebuild which makes that trek a nightmare in traffic. The highway people have done a good job though in keeping to schedule and closing it in halves. Our half will reopen at the end of this year, then the remainder into the city shuts up like a drum. So, nahhhhhhhhhhh - we'll watch the games on the telly. Cheaper that way 'n Juneau prefers it! <grin>

Actually, Florence <Flo> was one of the "beauties" who frequented the waterfront dives establishments in St. Johns, Nfld. A fine looking beast specimen, especially at closing time. 'nuf said . . . <grin>

You are spot on with the comments regarding war graves and wreck sites. And not only the "name of science crowd," how about the just-plain-greed-mongersQuestion [?] <barf> And yes, I feel precisely as you do when it comes to any kind of grave robbing, which is what has occurred in Egypt 'n right here in north America with the native American mounds. <triple barf>

Regarding the Canadas - there have been sanctioned "trimming of the flock" hunts for 'em with the meat going to the prisons. None in these parts that I'm aware of, but I've read about 'em happening elsewhere. Good idea . . .

Funny, but predictable outcome for the model coal train. Probably something just not thought of when assembling it. I'd probably NOT have given it a thought either. But surely KNOW BETTER now! Thumbs Up [tup]

FROST in Brantford! Awwwwwwwwwright, I'm on my way! Let the St. George Arms pub crew know that the thirsty Yank is heading north for the winter. Open up the Penthouse Suite! Say whatQuestion [?]

Thanx for the daylite visit, chat 'n business! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] <KaChing> <KaChing>

* * * * *    * * * * *     * * * * *

Keep seeing Fergie logged on <yesterday 'n today>, but no appearances here. Hmmmmmm. As tenuous as things are 'round here in daylite . . . even an encouraging word! Oh well. Confused [%-)]

Later - I hope! Thumbs Up [tup]

Good Afternoon Capt Tom and Crew...Angry [:(!]

I've been busy! What can I say... not much as I'm packing and taking care of business and so forth. But I'll take a cup of Java and some Apple Crumb Pie with melted cheese and a scoop of Ice Cream.

Been a very hectic couple of days as I' spent the better part of the day in Halifax with son in tow for Doctors appointments and an all morning tour of Kings University. AJ is looking at this one very seriously so if he can mintain his grades it's looking very positive! As for myself been under the weather this past week with flu like symptoms but I will live... Sorry Tom can't get rid of my lingering presence quite yet! And yes I did get to the LHS to pick up turnouts and more sound decoders Big Smile [:D]

As for the Sports banter... Keep it!! Lisa's ticked as her heart has been yanked out and stomped on as the Jays go down yet again in de feet of agonySad [:(] I think she is now a "Anyone but Boston" kinda girl. As for my "Boyz on the street Football pool"... Well I was doing good until I got home from the Arctic and did the picking of teams. Lisa had 8 for 8 up unitl that point and I have been 1 for 4 since my arrival back. The concept is pick a winner, pick a loser for each week, for each one right you get two points and you can only pick a team once be it either winner or loser on a given week. Who would have thought the Dolphins were going to win this week... who would of thought the Chiefs were going to beat the Broncos?!? WHAAAaaaa

Anyway we fly out tomorrow for 6 or so days and have train trips to Kigngston and Brantford.

Rob: did you get my e-mail regarding possible rendezvous? We head back to to Toronto from Brantford on the 12 45pm train... I think... I'll check with LisaWhistling [:-^] BTW Bachmann is releasing new PCC's and one of them is in TTC livery. I may even get one.

Shane: Glad you liked  the story on the H&SW! Yes she's a keeper!  I've only got one book on the C&O and that's the one by Morning Sun. Always thought the lights for the Kanawha's were the same, now I'll have to check.

Eric: Hate those kinda dreams! I've hit a lot of shoals and docks that way!! Waking up in a cold sweat with a shiver down your spine

Tom: I'm - not - talking -  to - YOUAngry [:(!] Making me feel bad for not coming in and staying... Sorry bud just too busy and too many things going on (had a 1 1/2hr  Physio session this morning) though I did like the 2-10-2 articles not that I'm partial to that arrangement (as the MESS has 5 of them) You'll be interested to know Bachmann is doing a re-release of the ATSF 4-8-4's and they look much better then their original offering by Bachmann.

Anyway guys AJ is in the door an has home work, and I have housework

Later

Good Afternoon Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please (New England Full City Roast will be good with a little "something" to ease the nasal congestion.

Rob - Your coal train story is just like the real thing.  The C&O did something like that a few years ago when they dumped two loads into a restaurant parking lot on Mother's Day.  Believe me, there were lots of sentence enhancers used that day, especially since that was the restaurant's biggest business day.  The cars didn't pole vault, rather they just, as the foreman in charge of cleaning up the mess told me, "Sorta got tired and decided to lie down."  Turning rail over tends to do that.

Fergie - We have created a headlight monster - one eyed beast sorta like Boris!  Ah, there he is now.  I have had the sickness as well but have been fighting through it.  Have the oldest hun down with it as well.  Mom made him go to school and, of course, I had to go get him b4 heading to work yesterday.  They never, ever, listen to me! (lol)

OSP - My, my what a lovely 4-6-6-4; look at the monstrous pilot on the front!  I have never seen one in operation as I don't get out to UP territory very often.  The D&H had some which were the only ones in New England, and the late, lamented Clinchfield had some in this part of the world.

The C&O, always thinking big, decided to go with the H-8, a 2-6-6-6.  The Virginian, not to be outdone, got some of their own.  A friend in Nashville had a very nice O scale layout and he modeled C&O - and yes, he had a pair of H8s in O scale - amazing to watch them handle curvaes and turnouts!  IIRC, they were Max Gray models.

Have a good evening.

Good afternoon Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Ruth, my dear, wonderful, wonderful! Food? Oh, yes, I'll have a #5 and a cold Keith's, please!  Did you? Hmm, yeah that wall came right off! Even the safe blow open. A lot of money, I know. I'm glad Vito wasn't here. Was he?

Tuesday and time for a break at the Tavern by the Siding!

Nick –  Ahh, I should have thought about looking in the galley!Smile [:)]

Thanks for the info on #57! Did B.R. order any more of that type?Question [?]

I have heard that name, Rootes, before and now when you mentioned auto-parts it rings a bell! Thank you!Thumbs Up [tup]

Tom –  I guess you are using all that deadwood in your fireplace.Smile [:)]

I was looking (but never asked) for the MoPac car last May, but didn't see it. It is probably in the big shed. Maybe they are working on it? Question [?]

Gas here is now in the low $3.20’s.

No, it was an accident at the Second Class Saloon. One of Vito’s guys came down to Our Place and went to Boris’ shed to borrow a can of fuel to get their grill up and running. He took the wrong can and got a can of high octane fuel for airplanes. Boris got that fuel after reading about that old Halifax bomber, just in case. Anyway, the grill started in a kind of explosive way and blow off a good portion of the back wall of the saloon. The corner where Vito has (hrrmm, had) his office. Whistling [:-^]

I have actually been in Seattle when the sun was shining from a blue sky! But most of the time it has been cloudy (and some rain). Smile [:)]

Allan –  Godwits? Interesting, they have special Godwits Days in California in the spring, see the link

http://www.godwitdays.com/

Yes, I like to take a break from mowing the lawn in the winter. Smile [:)]

CM3 –  Hmm, I checked now and all pictures are showing up the way they are supposed to. Maybe Boris...?

Thanks for the info on the headlights!Thumbs Up [tup] So they had that kind of headlights with the twin bulbs in the 40’s?Question [?]

Rob –  I hope and think you are right about the MoPac car.Smile [:)]

I’ll see if I can find any pictures from Lake Mjøsa among my slides from those trips. Very possible.

Fergie –  Yes, it is strange about those dreams. I have two different ones, one with a set of EMU’s and one with a locomotive and passenger cars. It always ends with me waking up the same moment the crash happens. Dead [xx(]

Have a nice trip!! Smile [:)]Smile [:)]

Entrance to Vito's new office.

Found an interesting link.

http://www.coffeecreek.info/restore.html

Looking forward to see that car finished.

Round for the house!

G'day Gents!

I see Fergie emerged from his busy, busy life to spend a wee bit o' time on his stool AND Shane also swung by for his refill this day. <sweet> Surely helps to have some daylite conversations 'round here . . . thanx, Gents! Bow [bow]

Then Eric too! Wow!! [wow]

Let me get to a semblance of "real time" Acknowldgments while I have the TIME! <grin>

Page 31 - Fergie <Fergmiester> at 1:20 PM <3:20 PM ADT>: Aw c'mon Fergie, don't be mad at me. After all, you were logged on 'n that sez you ain't THAT busy! <geesh> But, sorry to OH-FEND your sensibilities <again> - I keep forgetting about the MODERN DAY Sailor, et al. <grin>

Must find a way to get Lisa away from living 'n dying over the fates of pro-sports teams. Perhaps a HOBBY is in order. Hmmmmmmm. I KNOW! S-gauge trains - with diesel locomotives and lots of passenger cars! Yeah - now that's a great way to get the mind "off" . . . <grin>

Amazing how the available time ALWAYS seems to fit the available needs <'n vice-versa>. Found that LHS in spite of being busy, ehQuestion [?] And why NOT, sez I!! Thumbs Up [tup] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Just took a "sneak" preview of my Christmas present - a Pennsy K4 Pacific w/tender <Bachmann Spectrum series> 'n Athearn caboose. Test ran 'n placed on Carol's desk for wrapping for the holidays. At this stage of life - I enjoy receiving what I feel like giving myself! <grin> So, that makes 11 steamers for the display case which is rapidly filling . . . figure there's only room for a few more w/cabooses of course.

A streetcar in TTC markingsQuestion [?] Now that's something I just might consider for display purposes. After all, I've traveled aboard 'em 'n therefore they would "qualify" for the way I do things. Well, most things! Well, some things! Hmmmmm. Whatever! <grin>

Had me worried there for a sec - thought you said you were at a psycho thereapy - which of course makes sense! <uh oh>

By the by - that order of yours qualifies for a massive <tweeting>! Good Gawd Gertie! What do you think this joint ISQuestion [?] A coffee shop! <horrors> Nope, we're a gin mill - a tavern - a bar - a saloon - watering hole for adult beverages. Ice cream, apple crumb pie INDEED! <geesh>

Have a wunnerful time away 'n hope you 'n Lisa get everything accomplished in the window of time available. Believe me, WE surely know about that sort of thing! We'll keep your stool at the ready 'n of course will be looking for ya in a couple of weeks. Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow]

Page 31 - CM3 Shane <coalminer3 at 1:54 PM <2:54 PM EDT>: Surprise visit in the form of a refill from our Resident WVA Connection! Many thanx for recognizing we can use all the help we can muster up during daylite in these times of so few available regulars. Bow [bow]

Appears that 4-6-6-4 steamer flicked your Bic! <grin> Appreciate the ensuring chat . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

Ah, I see you've ordered a "little something," which of course we just finished concocting out in the outback in the barrel with the smoking seams! <yikes> Kickapoo Joy Juice comin' right up! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I'm here to tell ya that the more I see those steamers being "test run," the more I've become enamored with 'em. It's easy to understand how one gets hooked on 'em for real. Especially given life's experiences. I really didn't see too many in New York City - but we've discussed that before. I was therefore weened on the GG1s and diesels of PRR, NYC, NH & B&O times. Ahhhhh.

Hope the malady-monster has departed your digs! <geesh> Looks like Boris, eh Question [?] Now THAT IS frightening! <yikes>

Thanx for the visit, chat 'n business! Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow] <KaChing> <KaChing>

Page 31 - Eric <EricX2000> at 2:42 PM <12:42 PM Sandbox time>: Just caught your Post before depositing this into the Ether! Bow [bow]

Some of the deadwood is okay for the fireplace, most not. Don't like bringing critters into the house that are sleeping then awaken to the warmth of the interior -if you know what I mean! <yikes>

When Carol 'n I spent our 10 days on the west coast in 1996 (5 in Seattle - 5 in Portland) - the sun shone every day that August for us. It was terrific - most picturesque, fer sure, fer sure.

So THAT's why there's a "hit" out for Boris lodged by Mountain Man Mike! Explains it all. <geesh> Some guys just can't take a joke, eh Question [?] <grin>

Came home today from the 2nd walk with Juneau <in between the rain drops> 'n noticed all kinds of paint markings on our lawn - front, sides 'n back. Wondered WHAT in bloody blazes was going on.

There's all kinds of utility crews in our area - literally destroying front lawns 'n the like. Thought the worst.

BUT, I managed to see the guy who was doing the marking 'n he explained that it was in connection the "landscaping work" I had contracted. We have a law that sez all untility lines must be marked before any digging gets done. <phew> So, of course, the guy marked every one - every easement, etc. With the work being contracted restricted to the front of the house only - I guess they are required to mark everything. BUT, at least I KNOW 'n that also means it can't be too long before things get moving for us! Yeah!! [yeah]

Most interesting "office" for Vito - reminds me of a place I used to frequent as a kid! Called the Detention Center! <grin>

Many thanx for thinking of us during daylite! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] And of course, thanx for the ROUND! Yeah!! [yeah]

Well good evening gentlemen all-another day another dollar as they say, Leon-beers for the company please and see if we can tickle the bossmans fancy with a large brandy for turning the page  Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]--just a quickie before I nip out to the galley-got a sweet deal on a full striploin of prime Welsh black ( I suspect Vito`s influence here ) so we are looking at some midweek specials,-how about 6oz Sirloin subs (with onions, mushrooms and secret recipe horseradish-makes wasabi look like burger relish).....or for the serious diner-12 oz Sirloin with fries/jacket,onion rings, mushrooms, grilled tomato and Chef [C=:-)]salad or veg de jour and sauce of your choice.....For an early-bird breakfast/lunch special try the body-builder:- 8oz steak,2 fried eggs, hash browns or waffles, bottomless coffee mug and a courtesy copy of the Gazette to enjoy while you digest your food-have yet to price it up but $5 for the sub,$20 for the dinner & $10 for the breakfast looks to be a good ball-park figure-

O.K-back in a bit

Unfortunately I has this bad habit of logging on and then walking away from the puter... sometimes for hours on endWhistling [:-^]

Lisa is the kinda girl ho doesn't hold grudges, no sir they become embedded! This is why I will never cross the track on her... ever! Better to lay down on them and take it like a man! Less painful too.

As to the Tweeting sorry I forgot to order that covered in Nova Scotian Apple WineDinner [dinner]\

Eric: Look in a few books and all I saw was the 4-8-4's, 4-6-4's and 2-8-4's all had the double bulbed headlights. pictures were @ early 50's. Also saw a picture of a B&O beast with a double headlight. Wonder if this was a state law and might have had something to do with Passenger type engines. Though the Allegheny and Mountain was a single bulb.

Anyway enough chat NCIS is coming on.

 G'day Gents!

And TWO more have made it "in" before the sun has reached the horizon in Can-Am County! Wow!! [wow] Nice turnout in the daylite! Bow [bow]

To the Acknowledments!

Page 32 - Nick <nickinwestwales> at 5:02 PM <11:02 PM GMT>: Hmmmm, as Proprietor - cut those prices in HALF, Mate - that'll be plenty to sustain the way we DO things 'round here! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Can-Am County hasn't been impacted by the world-wide near panic <yet>.

Many thanx for the Brandy! Have a beverage of your choice on the house! Thumbs Up [tup]

All kinds of good things to savor on your Menu, all befitting of a Chief Chef Chef [C=:-)] who is unparalled in culinary specialties of the house. <phew>

Appreciate the "bookmark" - THAT's the WAY to DO IT! Bow [bow]

Page 32 - Fergie <Fergmiester> at 6 PM <8 PM ADT>: Back with a surprise visit <actually, they are ALL surprises!> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Not sure about the need for the cut 'n paste . . . but whatever floats you boat! Confused [%-)] Whistling [:-^]

Logged on but walking away is a <tweetable> OH-FENCE! <geesh> But, it will be held in abeyance . . . Hmmmmm. Nice try, but NO seegar with the 'sauce' - we don't feature soda shoppe -type orders! <uh oh>

Good to know that you KNOW your PLACE in the pecking order when it comes to husbands 'n wives. Learned that a loooooooooong time ago. <grin>

We haven't watched "regular" TV 'round here in ages - only exception is "24" which has my bride "hooked." She was devasted at missing the entire last season due to whatever strike kept 'em off the air . . . but they'll be baaaaaaaaack. <groan>

Appreciate the 2nd shot at trying to regain your "status" at the bar! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

* * * * *     * * * * *     * * * * *

A head's up: I'll be away from the bar from mid-morning 'til late afternoon on Wednesday!

My my-there`s an interesting and eclectic bunch of posts..Approve [^]-well done all..

Leon-better go for the litre steins again please old love-this might take a while..........

Lets have some music while I think-how about a blues selection tonight-Junior Wells,Bessie Smith ,Ray Charles,Otis Spann,Mr Muddy (of course) John Lee (likewise) Willie Dixon (who else) and for the real feel Mr Robert Johnson-lets hope it drowns out the reportage from the mud wrestling and venom spitting contest down in Tennessee tonight..............Whistling [:-^]

O.K-to business

Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-saws & chippers-Have always found Husqvana saws to be good to go-although sharpening the chains is as tedious a job as one might wish for-always go for one with carbon-steel teeth if poss-just like kitchen knives, they hold the `edge` longer --with chippers, the manufacturers tend to eggagerate the abilities of the machine-if it says `will eat 1/2 " round`it generally means`will get sick on anything more than1/4" brush`............Banged Head [banghead]

Like yourself,I associate the name `Sabre Jet` with Korea-age precludes `real` experience but a childhood diet of the brilliant M*A*S*H helped cement my opinions ..........

To easier topics,NMRA-have no experience with them other than trying the car weighting standards-seems to improve running,so am cool with that..Can appreciate that these organisations can get very cliquey and holier than thou-no use to me at all-can`t be doing with it....

Havn`t tried Con-Cor products-they certainly look fine in your pix and if they run well--job done says I-I would agree with ROB-R.E wheelsets-not only do they clean the track but they reduce the frictive co-efficient which can only increase motor life---plus that lovely clickety-click on the joints which we all love so well Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]

It would seem we have a house majority on the war graves issue-nuff said there..

Glad you enjoyed yesterdays submission-and thanks for the drink -I`ll have a special rum Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

ALLAN-Have mentioned before how similar Wales & New Zealand look-could be something to do with the procession of coaching staff over here Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]-(bring back Graham Henry says I-for England though ) could we be looking at a new tradition of service to match the Swiss Guards at the Vatican or the Gurkha regiment..... More contentious is the Wasps coach taking a job `over the border`-my dear old mum can get quite vocal on the subject...Whistling [:-^]

BTW-Any updates on the take over you mentioned some time ago..?? -interested parties and all that....

SHANE-Now maps-theres a subject dear to my heart-If I could have my time again I would love to have been a cartographer-the greatest pleasure I get from any trip away is getting the map sheets first and working out where everything is Approve [^]-how much more of a thrill to be there on the ground doing the mapping Approve [^]Approve [^]-can sit down with an O.S sheet and read it with as much pleasure as a good book-

incidentally,I note you describe your enlargement as 11x17-over here that would be 17x11-just one of the many differences Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Canada geese-we have huge numbers of them stopping over here-they usually `flock` (if thats the word) about a mile upriver from here-the river and surrounding fields are black with them for weeks at a time-must admit, rather like the sound of the `wings`(or is it `skeins`?) flying in and calling to each other........

ROB-Prototypes and models-well,they must get them from somewhere-most of the Brit steam models are taken from preserved examples (to allow accurate measuring I assume)-I guess statistically they must be near someone........agree your points R.E wheelsets ( I realise I was preaching to the choir but given the number of `silent` viewers we have ,I thought somebody might find it useful-gotta pass it on somehow)

The coal train tale was a beaut..Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]-can imagine the appalling silence as the poor soul was picking them all up again-my heart goes out actually-must have been a horrible moment....

On a linked theme-several times recently there have been serious de-railments at Cochrane yard where the C.N bridge traffic that the O.N.R are carrying has dug up the rails and settled in the dirt-usually seems to be covered gons for some reason........

FERGIE-Interesting things to do in Brantford #1-drink beer with ROB

#2-see above..repeat as neccessary....Approve [^]

ERIC-Sorry mate-have been flat out since we last spoke, but will get on the case R.E #57 as soon as I have a moment-I suspect there were several of them but won`t commit until I have firm data Thumbs Up [tup]

A final note on the avian front:- now this may be another urban myth,

Scenario:-testing of new jet aero engine-part of test involves resistance to flying into flocks of birds-test involves firing chicken into engine-result-total destruction of fan blades etc, memo sent to engine manufacturer-what to do-reply sent " try defrosting chicken..."

O.K-gonna post this and try for a record 3rd post (will he make it...??? ) well-missisnick is taking the monkey to school tomorrow ,so YES HE WILL !!

Back for more-

FERGIE- NCIS-am also a fan-the only one of that whole slew that `cuts the mustard` for a Brit-Would love to see ALL of Abby`s tattoos Whistling [:-^]-the CSI stuff is worse acting than my daughters school play.................

Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-Sorry,should have mentioned, advertised prices are just for `Joe Public`-regulars get the 50% discount......

Leon-better do the business again-a large one for FERGIE before he is launched into the living hell that is `wife in big city shopping mode` (good luck mate )

O.K-as its prolly gonna be wednesday before most of you read this, thought I might be a bit previous and drop into Pikes Perspective mode-

Well, have cobbled together a sequence T/table for the layout-have yet to test it out and a couple of trains in reserve to fill in any gaps-

basically we have 13 trains and 32 movements-wont waste bandwidth with the full detail but thought a list of the trains might be of interest...

1-Pines Express-Bournemouth-Manchester & return-5 B.R Mk1 coaches inc diner -Green

2-Cardiff-Bournemouth express-3 Colletts & 2 Staniers-Carmine & Cream

3-Through Sleeper-Mixed Mk 1`s & Gresleys plus van-Maroon & C/C

4-Weymouth local-Cl 33 + Southern Electric 3rd rail 4-set-Green

5-B/mouth-Bath local-4 Maunsell coaches -Green

6-Bath-B/mouth local-3 mk 1`s-Maroon & Green

7-Bath-Bristol local-1 Collett-Carmine & Cream

8-Parcels-Bath-B/mouth-up to 5 assd vans

9-XP-Express freight,-assd fitted vans,flats etc

10-Coal-Loads in,empties out, plus coke loads from Bath Gasworks

11-Through freight-mixed loads

12-Tanks-Esso tanks -Avonmouth-Hamworthy

13-Pick -up gds-all the stragglers to be collected plus some loads to set out

N.B-the passenger locals do several `turns` everything else just runs once out and back

Hope this is of some small interest......

Leon-nightcaps for all please-I think the special brandy should do it............

Well gentlemen-I guess PETE & DAN should have had their meet at Birmingham New Street stn earlier-I look forward to seeing the pix-shame I couldn`t join them but today was a work day-and 100 or so happy bunnies should have their brand new books dropping on the mat tomorrow-is quite a nice feeling making that happen Approve [^]-also the $130 I got paid for doing it helps.......

O.K-I think it is time for the long and winding road-ah what the heck-lets have a Mentor Rickshaw home-I can afford the 75 cents plus tip......

Sleep well all-I know I will...

Hi Tom and all,

Leon, the usual round of Tui`s for all the guys` please.Yeah!! [yeah]

Nick. Another great tasty menu at very reasonable prices`.Dinner [dinner] The Wallabies are now coached by the Kiwi Robbie Deans who coached the very successful Canterbury Crusader`s Super 14 team, he really should be the AB`s coach after the RWC debacle according to most AB fans here.Banged Head [banghead] A very comprehensive sequence timetable with train consists for your running sessions, nice to see you have included some Gresley stock in that sleeper train.Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup] Hope Pete and Alan give you a ring while their in the Brum area, it would be good to have a chat with them.Yeah!! Tuesday - October 7th <all times Central daylite>:

Page 32 - Nick <nickinwestwales> at 7:08 PM ‘n 8:02 PM <1:08 AM ‘n 2:02 AM Wednesday GMT>: Our Resident Musician in Wales returned with a two-fer to make it a trifecta nite! Bow [bow]

In hopes that Wolfman will call you . . . Regarding work - yeah, it can get in the way more often than not - but one can't ignore the pay!

Canada Geese in Wales! TransAtlantic flights . . . no refuelingQuestion [?] They do make good sounds in flight . . . but are a pain in the Patoot when it comes to the droppings. <ugh>

Good "tip" for Fergie . . . methinks he'd thoroughly enjoy to food ‘n fare at the St. George Arms Pub - the Rendezvous I OH-FISH-UL after hours HQ. Yeah!! [yeah]

Mud wrestling ‘n venom spittingQuestion [?] Nah, just plain ole politics ad nausea. <barf>

All kinds of good stuff in those submissions ‘n especially liked the details regarding the makeup of your 13 trains! Wow!! [wow] As with you, I have some favorites that make the rounds ‘n rounds ‘n rounds - whereas the rest remain at the ready. It's a fine hobby, in spite of those who delight in criticizing that which so many of us find delight in.

And absolutely - the pricing you put forth IS for the general public - our <GoR> surely deserves ‘n always gets the reduced version. Thumbs Up [tup]

Many thanx for the inclusiveness ‘n always entertaining chat! ROUNDs help too . . . Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 32 - Allan <Gunneral> at 9:36 PM <3:36 PM Wednesday NZ DST>: Yeah, I can well imagine one sitting in the projectionist's booth watching a flick over ‘n over ‘n over. Probably have the soundtrack still imbedded, ehQuestion [?]

And yeah, I can relate to the long-term memory stuff, although thus far - the short term is better ‘n average. Can't say the same for "me bride" <as Pete likes to say> . . . there are times when I really wonder. <grin>

Speaking of the better-half, I told her about her "countrymen" being on the wing in downunder territory ‘n she too was amazed. Now that's one hulluva flight! <geesh> Must be the attraction to the Tui, ehQuestion [?] Those Canada Geese are EVERYWHERE! <grin>

Luv the names of the various sports teams! Surprised that some still exist in this day of "sensitivity" over pretty much EVERYTHING! Permit some to enter your country on the premise that they will assimilate ‘n in short order they're demonstrating against the values ‘n way of life that afforded them entry. <barf>

Appreciate the visit, chat ‘n of course the ROUND of Tui! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox. Gas is at $3.49 this a.m. Mid-range clouds this morning with a hint of rain for later in the day. The money eater in the basement is quiet as the temperatures have warmed up again.

It looks as though it was a rough day for Vito; his new office resembles a powder magazine. We can inspect it and see what's what.

Nick was in with all sorts of information and commentary. Good to hear from you and I applaud your choices for the jukebox: let's head for the crossroads. The Canadas were back at the post office this morning when I picked up mom's daily load of catalogs; she's on every mailing list in the world, I think.

Cartography is fascinating. Both of the huns have inherited my interest in that.

Years ago the WV Geological/Economic Survey published a series of books covering mineral resources in virtually every county in WV. Lots of fascinating material in there covering everything from coal geology to railroads. Each book came with a set of maps covering geology, terrain and there was also a railroad map. These last are particularly useful as they are a snapshot of what was around in the 1920s.

Also, the State of WV has been involved in a project to digitize old mine maps. These are important for reasons such as rescue and for making sure you don't dig into what's called "abandoned works" which can be full of water, dangerous gases, etc.

Last, since you are in the book trade, let me suggest a title that's worth hunting for. James E, Vance, jr, The North American Railroad: Its Origin, Evolution and Geography. Baltimore; Johns Hopkins Press, 1995. IMHO, it's right up there with John Stilgoe's book, Metropolitan Corridor.

Sequential timetable is a good way to go since you can stop and start anywhere and you're not tied to a fast clock. Back when I had a functional layout, I used the sequential table. If I wanted to run freight, I ran freight; if I wanted to run passenger, I could. If I chose to "watchen das trains roll," that's an option as well. I built mine from a 1960 era Official Guide and some appropriate freight schedules. Yes, Awk, coal trains ran as extras which gave me even more flexibility

Allan - Good to hear from you. Canadas, like Boris, are omnivorous. Around here, however, the deer are more of a destructive problem than the geese.

Fergie - See my comment to Eric re headlights.

Eric - Can't be sure as to which bulbs were applied to the locomotives as built. However, all of the pictures I have looked at so far are from the late 40s to early 50s. Coffee Creek link was interesting. If you think race horses eat money, buy a private car.

OSP - Always a good idea to mark out where you are going b4 you dig even though the marks may be approximate. Verizon hit a nearby gas line the other day which was not even on the plat for where they were working. No damage but it will pucker things for awhile. Steam will make a believer out of you after awhile. Nice shot of the PRR 6200 at Englewood. NYC 3144 is a Class L4b Mohawk (an order of 25 and the last 4-8-2s blt for the NYC). It is a Lima product, built in 1943. 26x30 cylinders, 72-inch drivers. I remember seeing NYC 4-8-2s in service on the B&A when I was a youngster.

Work safe
