Amtraks lack of transparency
Posted by blue streak 1 on Thursday, July 13, 2023 12:30 PM

Typical Amtrak announcement.  Said train 98 from Miami cancelled due to track work.  Actually 97 did not operate to MIA due to Washington derailment.

We are very sorry that your train was canceled. The cancelation is due to track work. Please feel free to send us a DM if you have any other questions.

Now here is an Amtrak bulletin that tells it like it  is.

@AmtrakAlerts

As of 9:45 am PT, California Zephyr Train 6 which departed Emeryville (EMY) on 7/13, is delayed departing Emeryville (EMY) due to the late repairs to a rail car. Updates to come.

Track work, derailment, a cancelled train is a cancelled train.  I doubt most people really care (or can really comprehend) about the cause.   And if we're splitting hairs -  it def'n looks like there needs to be some track work there.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

Doesn't it take track work to repair the effects of a derailment.  It is all a matter of how you want to look at it.

So there are only two train sets covering 97 and 98?  During July?

Not to mention that you're going to scare away customers by admitting to a derailment.

Who do you blame for this?.  The derailment of Train 86 has not been admitted by Amtrak to include a loco leaning against wall.

AFAIK the WA PO has not published loco derailed either.

Why do you feel that it's that important?  The Washington Post made an editorial decision about said picture.

Who else besides you (and the people at Amtrak) really cares?   You seem obsessed with pointing out every time an Amtrak is delayed or derailed.

Are you suggesting a cover-up is going on involving Amtrak and WAPO?

NO NO NO.  Lack of good reporting.

NO NO NO.  Lack of good reporting.

But... as zug said... do readers of the Post really care?

In a perfect world Amtrak would not only quickly, concisely, and clearly communicate with passengers, but arrange to get them either back to a safe and comfortable station or continuing their 'transportation' as fast as possible.  There's about as much chance of that as there is that Amtrak will issue a concise and clear press release to the media about their derailments, perhaps even forgetting to place blame on the hapless and give fulsome political credit as desired.  But by the time the Post sees print and distribution, the issue will likely have been reduced to whether there will be ongoing delays or inconvenience... which pointedly does not involve a blame game or need to make something or somebody look bad.
