So Amtrak has 20,183 employees of which 2,766 are back office so lets just pay them to put passengers in Amtrak Employees cars and drive them!

This shouldn't be a problem because passengers don't equate to people.  If you take 4 Amtrak trips a year you are counted as 4 passengers but in reality you are still only one person.

I'm not an Amtrak employee but if i was I would sign up for the Sunset Route in the winter and the Empire Builder in the summer.  That would work out to be a nice gig.

Amtrak carries about 60,000 passengers a day.

In FY17 Amtrak had 31,738,000 riders or a daily average of 87,068.  In FY16 it had 31,274,000 riders or an average of 85,448 per day.

A couple of weeks ago I watched an interview with Condoleezza Rice.  She opined that most federal departments could cut 10 percent of the workforce and continue to function without any impairment.  I suspect Amtrak could do the same.

Amtrak carries about 60,000 passengers a day. Amtrak has 20,183 employees most of which have cars that have at least 4 open seats. We could get rid of the national long distance rail system and start a national AmUber car service that shuttles people anywhere they need to go using all those Amtrak Employees.

FY16 Amtrak had 20,183 full-time or full-time equivalent employees.  Of this number 2,766 or 13.7 percent were involved in support functions, i.e. Office of the President,
