Early in my "career" on the PRR, I was working with a signal crew somewhere South of Eaton Ohio and was on the track (single) and looked up and about 1 1/2 mile away I saw a headlight come around a curve. Passenger train from Chicago to Cincy. No sound. Naturally, I called HOT RAIL. but that train was quiet. No crossings near us and It impressed me on how deadly it could be if you were not alert. There was no sound until it was almost upon us. I suspect he was drifting at track speed on a slight downgrade.

It is truly amazing the amount of money wasted by industry to compensate because common sense no longer exists in most of the human race, not just railroads, but things like laundry detergent and even cups of hot coffee.

 

You ever read into that coffee case?  Liebeck v. McDonald's Restaurants if you're interested.

One item I have noticed over time is the darwin theory does work most of the time, you just have to watch yourself on team related tasks such as those in the Armed Forces that the guy slated for darwin elimination doesn't take you with him.

The South Florida mindset is what is dangerous, not Brightline, Tri-Rail, FEC or CSX.

Frieght trains have become quieter rapidly so over the last several decades.    Back around 1970 I used to walk along the Milwaukee Road Twin Cities main and you could hear both the Passenger and Freight trains a long ways off as they approached, so it was relatively safer than it is today..........horns on the Passenger trains, the engine noise on the Freight trains (especially the 1st generation units).     Nowadays the train is almost right on you before you hear it due to quiet zones, quieter engines, quieter horns, etc.    It has become more dangerous over time.    Additionally they have ear pods and smart phones or walkmans today.
