Where would one need to go to see SD90/43MACs in action? Also, how do they measure up in the performance dept?

Compared to the junk trailing thsoe -9s.. that is a beautiful site indeed! In 20 years, there will be races on who can photo the last remaining -9s.. so avoid the holiday rush and shoot them now!

Well, not to long ago I cought a NS -9. A Conrail Unit was trailing. Can any one tell me what type of loco that Conrail unit is? Looks like a SD60M, or SD70MAC. Anyway, I don't consider the -9 boreing. I guess it's because I live on a Subdivision, and not a main line. So the -9s are pretty exicting for me to see. Even the never ending stream of SD40-2s don't get boreing. Just the paint scheam. I'm really not a fan of the SD40-2 because to me, it has no charchter. But pretty soon they will be gone, so I get photos of them anyway.

One of the reasons that I love the widenose GEs.  They're around now and I have loads of room to shoot 'em.  Plus they're cool anyway!

Rochelle Ill. caught it on the BNSF line. I also caught a SOO SD60 on the UP line, the SP heritage unit, 5 brand new SD70ACes on the UP, 2 former SP units. The evening before that I caught 9 UP units, and ALL the colors that BNSF has, (Orange, War Bonnet [2], Yellow Bonnet, and Cascade green.)

Definitely an SD60M.  One of the immediately recognizable spotting features is the top of the long hood over the prime mover - it sits a little lower on the 70 than on the 60, so there's a "step-up" from the prime mover section to the radiator section.  Another immediate tell-tale are the trucks - the SD60M uses HTC trucks, while the SD70 uses HTCR radial trucks (the sideframes of which have a flatter appearance).

Another way to tell would be Conrail never had any SD70M's (only 15 SD70MACs, which wore the white smiley paint scheme similar to the SD80MACs). So if you spot a widecab EMD in CR paint, if it's not an SD60M, the only other thing it could be is an SD60I, ditinguishable from the 60M by the rubber gasket down the side of the nose.

that would be me! 

a dash-9 by itself is fine, its an impressive piece of machinery..its just that EVERY locomotive I see these days seems to be a dash-9..boring boring boring.. (I live near CSX and NS mainlines)

I started railfanning as a teenager in the 80's..Conrail SD40-2's GP30's GP8's and GP10's, old U-boats..then the new SD50's and C39-8's..not to mention D&H and Susquehanna Alcos, and everything under the sun on Guilford...now its nothing but wide-cabs everywhere..

well, im sure there were guys in the 1950's who were saying "man..trains are so boring these days! nothing but F-units and Alco PAs everywhere!" ;)

things change..in 30 years dash-9's will be the rare relics we are out chasing before they disappear..but for me, right now, local class1's are exceddingly dull..

Near my home is a siding where BNSF frequently parks trains for whatever reason.  When I see old BN or Santa Fe power I will give it a second look.   I will pay attention to recent EMD.  Whe I see the GE's I look away and watch the grass grow.  I don't know why but I really cannot stand GEs. 

I will have a few on my layout but the will be weathered to look like the all too common GE blowtorch.

heh.its always interesting how different people like or dislike different locos!

to me, the SD40-2 is a classic, and has TONS more character than an extremely boring dash-9! If I had a SD40-2 and a -9 in a yard side by side, I would shoot dozens of photos of the SD40-2, and ignore the -9 completely..

Don't get me wrong here. I will still take a picture of the SD40-2, and the Dash 9. Why would I do that? Well I would take the picture of the SD40-2 because one day they won't be around much longer. I'll take a picture of a dash 9 because I don't seem them to often. Around here it's SD40-2/40-3 country. I rarely get to see a Dash 9 here. Although one came through yesterday, and should be coming back tomorrow. Really, the 40-2s don't get boring, just the same road number. It was like GTW grey Goat 5940 switched around here for months! BOREING, it was plain grey. I'm glad now that WC SD40-2 6004 is switching.

Honestly.....I am a huge NS fan, but I dont really like new locos, I hate the safety cab. Spartan Cab all the way. I mean give me a Dash 9 fine I will watch, but I would kill for a high nose GP38-2. I love EMD so much more then GE, but I dont really like modern locos overall. Mike

buddy, you're speaking my language! spartan cabs are so great looking. usually tough and powerful in appearance. especially on CNW where they almost appear to resemble a smirking face

i dont mind widecabs as long as they dont have noselights. that's why UP 1995 kicks CNW 8646 and CNW 8701's metal asses any day of the week and why NS widecab GEs are the coolest ever!

NS has some of the coolest power ever because of spartan cabs. their SD60s look really sleek! and you gotta love the SD70s and C40-9s

Something about NS SD60s has always bothered me, and I just found out why. Course I still like them, but most of them didnt come with open wheelbaring trucks like all of the stock SD60s did. They arent off of SD40-2s are they?

I think that he means open wheel-bearings - such as the Timken roller bearings which replaced the older, sealed Hyatt roller bearings that were used on most of the pre-1984 Dash Two and earlier locomotives.

I like any train I see,since I don't see them much.

 The locomotives I see on a daily basis are FP7s and a GP9! (I live near an R.J. Corman shortline)

I've seen the Dinner Train's FP7s used in freight service,even.

The nearest CSX line to me actually hasn't given me too many Dash 9s,I've seen most of mine on the NS line in central Kentucky. I could always post a list of locomotives if anyone wants to see them.
