NorthWest
They sold off one of the 3 ex-demonstrator GP60s. Surprised that they didn't sell or trade someone for all of them a while ago.

Understand the one that was sold was a Shop Queen.  The other two haul freight for their keep.

VGN Jess
Why were they called "Thunder Cabs"?

They are very loud in the cab.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

Just a guess, but I would think it was started under EHH.

When he was at CP and downsized the locomotive fleet there, he parked a lot of the smaller classes like the SD9043MAC units (which may be all scrapped by now).

That results in efficiency of parts supply, training of repair staff, etc.

Again, just a guess.

Was this mass retirement EHH's idea before he retired or was it planned along time ago?

VOLKER LANDWEHR

What is a SD70AE? The CSX designation for a SD70ACe?
Regards, Volker

In it’s internal system CSX classed it’s SD70ACe’s as SD70AE due to the 6 character limit in the computer system, a common issue on all railroads. The units were stenciled as SD70ACe on the actual locomotives though. Likewise CSX classes it’s SD70MAC fleet as SD70AC.

The SD70ACe was indeed a rare and unique model in the CSX fleet with only 20 units on the roster, CSXT #4831-4850. CSXT #4839 was retired and sold to LTEX in 2016 while the remaining 19 were just retired and sold back to Progress Rail.

Thank you for the photos.

I found a CSX roster on thedieselshop.us that showed SD70ACe with the numbers of the SD70AE but I wasn't sure.

Volker, it looks like you are correct that they are referring to SD70ACe units.

Here are a few recent pictures of CSX SD70ACe units and the numbers correspond with those in the posting.

In the captions, the SD70ACe units are referred to as "rare" due to them being a relatively small class, and "despised thundercabs"....

CSX Locomotives on Facebook
CSX Locomotive Roster Update As of 01 Jan 2018

Welcome to 2018! For this beginning-of-year update, covering changes we were able to find and confirm in December, we’ve got the largest raft of retirements we’ve ever reported at once, at nearly 200! We’ve been able to confirm the remainder of the 7300 series and all of the SD70AEs as gone. Additionally, we’ve learned that SD60s of all three variants are beginning to be retired, with plans to wipe the whole fleet soon – so any out there still running are on borrowed time – at least as CSX power.

Therefore in this update we’ll cover the retirements of the 7300s, the SD70AEs, and the SD60/I/Ms. Yes, while the SD60s are not yet all gone, our numbers will reflect this change as one move now, since tracking them each individually just isn’t feasible. Note that the SD70AEs are confirmed as going back to Progress, and the GEs are going to Larry’s Truck, in some sort of deal with GE for what to do with them next. Some are showing up as GECX lease units, but note that LTE/GE have amassed hundreds of C40-8s and C40-8Ws from CSX, UP and NS, with more on the way – potentially the rest of CSX’s Dash8s could serve their last miles in 2018.

Also one SW1500, the 1105, which was previously used as a training unit at the REDI center in Georgia, has been retired off the roster and sent via sale or lease to the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
