The CN EMD SD75I is my all time favorite

This unit is the same as the EMD SD75M, with 4300 horsepower, HTCR-II radial trucks and a 72 feet 4 inch frame. The only difference between the two models is the cab. The "I" in the model designation stands for Isolated cab, this type of cab is recognized by a seam separating the nose and cab components. This seam is the rubber that dampens vibration and cuts down on noise, because the cab is not attached directly to the frame on the unit. This was the last model that used the "I" designation in the model name, later all units had the isolated cab, but the model designation continued to use the "M". The big buyers were Canadian National with 175 units, the biggest amount (now with 173), Burlington Northern Santa Fe with 26, and Ontario Northland with 6.

For me it's a toss up, I do like the tried and true GP7's and 9's ( before they were rebuilt to lownose units ) but my all time is the RS10-Rs18 series from MLW.

bit of a toss-up:

(in no particular order), CN's ES44DC (the first order), VIA's F40PH-2, and the new rebuild (#6400, soon to be all of them), P42DC...

I might also give a nod to the new SD70M-2's...ONLY the ones with the NOSE MOUNTED headlights...cab mounted lights annoy me to no end...

Let me ask you if there's a different between nose mounted healights or cab mounted lights?

IMHO, my favorite new locomotive is the GE ES44DC, those SD70M-2's are absolute junk. My favorite vintage locomotive is a toss up between the locomotive I use every day, a GP9, and a Baldwin DRS4410.

I grew up riding on GP9's and GP7's. And when I started my railroad career that"s all we had with the exepction of the GP35's and SD20's. That's were my heart is. A GP9 or GP7 is my pick.

I would have to say the SD70ACe. That notched nose won me over. Sound wise, I'm leaning more towards the Evoultion Series locomotives.

BEING FROM CHICAGO AND GROWING UP ALONG THE MILWAUKEE NORTH DISTRICT METRA LINE/NORTHWEST SUBURBAN TRANSIT AUTHORITY IT WOULD HAVE TO BE ALL 14 EMD F40C's THAT RAN ON THE METRA LINE FROM 1974 TILL 2005.  THEY WERE EFFECTIONATLY KNOW TO LOCAL's AS THE SILVER SIDES.

On the Dash 9, the dynamic brake vents are on the top of the hood immediately behind the cab.  The cabinet on the fireman/conductor side behind the cab is the length of the dynamic brake area.  On the AC4400, the dynamic brake is further back, next to the engine air intake.  The area between the cab and dynamic brake area is about the same size as the dynamic brake area on the Dash 9.  The cabinet on the conductor side is lengthened to match the location of the dynamic brake area.  The area in front of the dynamic brake is where the inverters are.

The question refers to the outer apperance of the locomotive.
