Seems like CSX is trying to be good corporate citizen. I am sure thier is the need for this in the area's it serves. So is this a better way to get better PR in the non rail fan community ?
Doesn't hurt.
Run a steam program and the railfans will love you.
Feed the hungry and everybody will love you - even those people who would raise a howl about steam locomotive smoke and cinders...
Chuck
My feelings as well.
The food bank will make the public love CSX! The steam train will make the public love the railroad! There is a difference!
Sometimes I don't think the CSX loves the railroad, I think it loves money, they are just business men - railroad be damned - Amtrak passengers can drop dead - because its just a money making business - just a career!
There is a difference. One thing you can tell about Union Pacific is they love Wyoming and the "west" and the railroad - I think they would rather be railroading than anything else. The money is just an extra benefit! You mean they pay us for this?!
Why else would you drag a Big Boy out of the museum and put it to work again in 2016. Why else would you have an unretired 4-8-4? Why else would you have a mint condition executive train? and passenger excursion fleet? Why paint your logo with Old Glory for all the world to see! And celebrate your the one "Amerian Flag Line" that never fell?
Ya got love the railroad!
Doc
You think thier shareholders gotta love the railroad or gotta love the business. I see your point just dont agree with it. Many ways to love the railroad and participate in worthy projects to help both the image and the regions they serve.
Trust me I been chasing steam since I was a kid and plan to go on the hunt again this spring. But I don't think you can judge CSX or any other railroad or corporation by any other standard . they gotta to love the business.

Too bad you have no knowledge about what you are spouting!
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
Doesn't CSX have heritage diesel paint schemes? Gotta love the railroad to do that!
Who can argue with foodbanks and food for the poor? CSX is being a good corporate citizen by doing this.
As long as they are supporting the food bank for people in general. Unlike Wal-Mart who has a food bank for it's own employees. Don't get me going about that!
It sure looks to me like the U.P. takes some serious pride in themselves which is a fine thing.
Wal mart supports local food banks. Not thier own.
A food bank for its own employees?
That is what I've heard. Makes you wonder what's wrong with the world.
When Caterpillar closed the EMD plant in London, Ontario and moved production to Indiana, they were going to pay all their new hires $15.00 an hour which made them qualified to receive food stamps. And Indiana was glad to get an uptick in employment.
Remember what Raoul Duke (Dr. Hunter S. Thompson) said in Doonesbury years ago? "This is why I don't do drugs anymore, who can tell the difference?"
I can tell you that at the food bank I volunteer at, Wal Mart is a major player along with other local companies.
Dr D I think they would rather be railroading than anything else. The money is just an extra benefit! You mean they pay us for this?! Doc

I think we can find the name of an insitution to refer those people to.
--zug (in it for the money).
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any

Any rational corporation wants to get the most of any spending on publicity. The food program probably helps the locals more than we know. What they get with a steam program is mostly the same people including me taking pictures and not adding any real upscale type of publicity for their spending. We are a minority of people when it comes to watching trains compared to almost any other hobby. I am not sure why any railroad today would want people, often called trespassers by the railroad all over their property in an era of lawsuits for almost any incident.
Just a thought

Walmart gives away so much food and other items to local charities that I find it amazing they make so much money. They gave the representative of the school where my wife worked so much stuff weekly that they formed a full time give away program to the needy kids and helped many families at that school.
Then maybe that article I read about it was wrong? I tend to think the worst of the Beast from Bentonville, anyway.
daveklepper Doesn't CSX have heritage diesel paint schemes? Gotta love the railroad to do that!
Actually Dave, CSX hasn't done any heritage paint schemes as Union Pacific and Norfolk-Southern has. LIONEL, on the other hand, did do some CSX heritage trains several years ago. And that's the closest we've gotten to a CSX "Heritage Fleet."
Oh and CAZEPHYR, how does Wal-Mart make so much money? It's simple, keep the prices as low as possible and make it up in volume sales. It works. It's the "fast nickle is better than a slow dime" philosphy writ large.
Plus, they keep prices low by, say, you have a product you want to sell from your factory. Wal-Mart tells you they will buy everything you make and here's what you'll get paid. At the price they offer, the only way you can make any money is by moving production to China. Everyone loves cheap but there's still a huge cost to be paid.
There's quite a few other things involved concerning moving production to China, but it'll get political if I go down that road and I'm not sure I want to go there.
Do I like the cheap prices if it means having EVERYTHING made in China? No. This old Marine has serious national security concerns involving same.
Firelock, I feel the exact same way. Fuel is cheap right now so it's not likely that production of much is going to move back here anytime soon like people were talking about when fuel was expensive. They still make things in North America but aside from vehicles and large household appliances, most everyting else is made in China. I try to buy Canadian or American made items wherever possible. When I need a lamp, for example, I'll go to an antique store. Or Ebay which I did when my 1977 vintage Dremel tool finally died. I bought the exact same one for 40 bucks. At Home Depot, all the power tools are made in you-know-where and I highly doubt I'd get 38 years out of anything made over there.
So what Wal mart competitor sell american made merchandize and how many customer really care about the country of origin. Obviously very few. If this wasn't the case Wal mart and its competitor would not be successful. Its all market driven

And also allow the government to susidize your workers and provide tax breaks for your stores., but that is getting OT.
So long if CSX dumps its lost orange juice train that cant make it to New Jersey in Richmond VA and throws in some ethonal as a mixer I am fine with that!
Ya know, I see that CSX Tropicana train come through Richmond quite often, but the thought never ocurred to me to turn the whole cargo into "torpedo juice!"
Oh well, I can't think of everything. That's what the "Forum's" for.
