Just like it did with the 21st century express and Yellow Ribbon Express...

File it under "I'll believe it when I see it".

I expect that the promoter thinks the railway is just like a public highway, and anyone can just appear and operate over it, essentially for free.  It ain't that easy, and he probably has yet to make even an initial approach to CSX.  When he does, there will be a reality check that will instantly kill his dream.  Beyond that aspect, he may have the locomotive but I wonder if he has passenger cars qualified for mainline operation for it to pull.

In other words, don't bother to make plans to ride it.

Actually, the promoter knows, since it's Ross Rowland.  No stranger to RRing.  He's had some huge ideas lately, but none of them are panning out.  I just don't think having a $7-800 a trip luxury train in this economy will have too many takers, though....

I live in Pottstown PA where he claims he will rebuild the cars at.......I`ll believe that when I see it.

I was unaware it was Ross Rowland, and he will indeed be fully aware of the many challenges to be overcome.  I still doubt that he will be able to make the numbers work.

Over the years I have seen various other schemes that were complete non-starters, dreamed up by folks who thought starting a train operation was just as simple (and cheap) as it would be with a highway bus.

this is what i got from TO
1. Motive Power- We have purchsed 3, C-39-8 locos on the second hand market ( all runners equipped with cab signals) and will be giving them a top to bottom going over and then a first class repainting into GBX livery as designed by noted rr artist Bob Lorenz.
The biz. plan calls for the GBX to be all diesel powered for its first season ( 7/2/2012- 1/15/2013 ) and for steam to be added ( subject to approvals from Amtrak, CSX and Buckingham Branch RR, approvals that I am guardedly optimistic we will achieve) in the second season ( 3/17/2013- 1/15/2014).
When steam is added the GBX will be diesel powered WUS-Gordonsville and steam powered Gordonsville-WSS in both directions. There will be NO repeat NO diesels in the consist when steam powered.
C&O 614 will be one of 3 steam engines in the steam stable. We will need 3 engines so that we have one on hot standby and one in cycle maintenance in addition to the one in active service.
We are actively vetting many candidate engines to be 614's 2 stable mates with a goal of finishing that task by 11/1/10.

2. Employment-- Pls. send resumes to; Cathy Pattison EA, Greenbrier Express Co.,Inc., POBox 700, Sackets Harbor,NY 13685. Please DO NOT call. Pls. include day and evening phone numbers.

plus i think  they understand the price to get it up and running because they are spending 15,000,000 dollars on it

please help the cb&q 5614

 The project is a go.

Well, there is their first mistake. They'll be all week trying to get those box rocks to accellerate!

I wonder if Mr. Rowland has bothered to pay his bills from the last time he ran the 614 in NJ in the mid - late 90's?

Linked: http://steamcentral.com/2010/06/20/co-614-to-return-to-service-in-2012/

FTA: "...The Greenbrier Express project is real and the check has cleared the bank, therefore it is no longer a ” concept” but rather a solid project..."

Further:"...The GBX will be a 17 car long, ultra first class day train that will bring 210 guests from Washington DC to the Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs,W.Va. It will operate the same route as the Cardinal, departing Wash.,DC on Tuesdays at 10:00 am arriving at WSS at 5pm. . . The GBX will return to Washington on Sundays, departing WSS at 10:00 am arriving DC at 5 pm.
. . .

Motive power will be a mix of modern diesels and classic mainline steam locomotives. On the steam powered portions of the journey there will be NO diesels in the train with HEP supplied by 2 baggage/generator cars. . . Service is scheduled to commence on July 2,2012. .."

I've read Mr. Rowlands postings.  Let's just say 2 years is a long way away, and erfurbishing some C39-8s and 17(?) cars is a LOT of money.

More power to him if he can pull it off.  But I won't hold my breath.

Ross Rowland may be a god to many in the steam fraternity, but I think he's wasting his time and money on this proposal.  As I've mentioned elsewhere, the track record of the American European Express would suggest that the market for a luxury cruise train like this one is too small to make it work.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

So despite being a sponsor of this well-advertised event, CSX decides not to transport one of the main attractions 10 miles on its own rails. That's the stupidest public relations decision I've ever heard of. But seeing how CSX is run on a daily basis, it's not surprising.

And also that joker still has a lot of debt he still owes.
