 Just wondering what people think about IRM getting the CNW sd40-2,

 I'm a big CNW fan so to me this is fantastic news, but I do think it makes the once modern SD40-2 now seem old, it wont be long before UP's C&NW AC4400's wind up at IRM permanently

Excellent news.  All too often the oddballs and rareties attract fan interest and get preserved, while the more typical and representative items get scrapped.  For example, heavyweight business cars are displayed all over the continent, but how many classic 12-1 Pullmans still exist.

The SD40-2 has arrived at IRM.  Pictures are on the web site.

I am glad too see that a SD40-2 was preserved.As much as many fans ( including myself ) hated these units in the 70s and 80s I would have been saddened to see every one go to scrap.

Just look at Amtrak's units. How many SDP40Fs exist today? Or P30CHs?

sd24b if you are referring to the SDP40Fs and P30CHs I believe the correct count is three and zero. The one ex-BNSF SDP40F has been preserved and EMD's two SDP40Fs are out at the DOT Pueblo Test Track. And yes we did not save a Pooch. Does anyone know of any other SDP40Fs extant.

An SD40-2 in a museum does sound unique, but it has done its duty for both C&NW and UP. It deserves a rest!

There is also an SD40-2 (UP 9950) on display at the Barstow Amtrak station, along with the Beep (ATSF 1460).

What is the criteria for saving something to a museum? If you took the "one of everything" approach, you'd go broke. Has to be "successful and/or significant". The SD40-2 passes on both accounts. By this measure, you might make a case for the SDP40F. It was significant as Amtrak's first attempt at modernizing their locomotive fleet and there is the interesting story of their eventual demise. But, the P30CH fails both criteria. It was an inconsequential dog.
