the Erie RR played a big role in shipping completed locomotives from the east to Chicago...both the original Erie main, first built to 6 ft gauge, and the line built thru OH and IN with east west mains seperated by 75 ft had realy wide clearences so many High Wide loads went Erie.....in fact
the Erie played into the design of the Mulbury landing barges used at Normandy Beach....it was planned to build these vesels on the Erie main at an undisclosed location in PA and ship them on the Erie....the only RR with big enough clearences

The eastern RRs had low bridges and tunnels here and there, but detours were always available -- on some other RR if not on the originating RR.

Since clearances in the East were very restricted in the early 20th century what routing did the new super engines have to their buying RR. EX: the SP's ACs, UP's Big boys?
