Just on principle, I would take it in any colour in which it historically found regular service. So.......
I have several model engines, and I do prefer the black...such as the Niagara. I also have a Lionel Grey Ghost Challenger, and she is a mighty handsome lady. Woudn't be without her.

I have seen a color picture of one in that paint scheme. I wish I saved it. I have to admit, that is my favorite paint scheme, too.
May your flanges always stay BETWEEN the rails
The black did make it look the closest to its other Alco-built cousin, the NY Central Niagaras.
Fashion has always said, you can't go wrong in basic black.
Personally, I prefer some oil, grease and grime, too.
Semper Vaporo
Pkgs.
Neither.
I did like it most before the grey paint. It was black and silver with white running board edges and white tires on every wheel.
(But a UP 4-8-4 is far away from being among my favs of steam engines.)
Which paint scheme did you like her best in?
Black and Graphite
Grey w/ yellow lettering & Striping
