Neither.

I did like it most before the grey paint. It was black and silver with white running board edges and white tires on every wheel.

(But a UP 4-8-4 is far away from being among my favs of steam engines.)

I prefer the black due to the yellow passenger coaches.  I really don't think the grey looks good with the yellow. Now if they had the grey passenger coaches I might be more tolerant. I think all steam engines look good black except the Daylight. I am not fond of colorful locomotives seems silly.

Fashion has always said, you can't go wrong in basic black.

Personally, I prefer some oil, grease and grime, too.

The black did make it look the closest to its other Alco-built cousin, the NY Central Niagaras.

I don't know if the 844, or any of the FEFs, ever wore the two tone grey with silver lettering and striping or not, but that is my favorite paint scheme for UP steam passenger power.

I have seen a color picture of one in that paint scheme. I wish I saved it. I have to admit, that is my favorite paint scheme, too.

Just on principle, I would take it in any colour in which it historically found regular service.  So.......

I have several model engines, and I do prefer the black...such as the Niagara.  I also have a Lionel Grey Ghost Challenger, and she is a mighty handsome lady.  Woudn't be without her.
