You start to seek information on how and where to look for railyards, and you may have a visit from the F.B. I. After what occurred on 9/11, they don't want anyone to go around railyards for any reason, other than to work. I wouldn't say too much while I am on here, if I were in your place. There are a lot of us who love our trains, and want to continues to do what we have always been doing. But the information you are looking for, is also looking for something that you don't want, neither do we.

Well lots of yards are quite well known like Cheyenne, No. Platte, Barstow, Hobart, Belem + probably in every major city in the lower 48 there is a yard.

spbed makes a good point. Most places are already frequented by railfans.

I have always stuck to the rule that if you stay in a particular region, eventually you will become a familiar face and not considered otherwise. I have never had a problem, even when I go outside my normal spots to new places. I have only been asked once by any police or security what I was doing. Even then they where fine with it as long as I stayed on public property (that was NS Police in Atlanta).

Mr. Zimmer: A grown man standing trackside was suspicious long before 9/11!!!!!
