Before any asks (and because we're sharing) - Tree because I'm 6'5".  It actually started out as an insult ("you big .... tree") but I embraced it.  Some from the high school era may not know my real name....

The 68 is the year I graduated from HS.

The moniker doesn't get a lot of use in "real life" any more.

Iron & Steel both scrapped and resold. I cannot tell you about the steeplecabs specifically but remember my Uncle Bill talking about reselling hopper (coal) cars and all sorts of parts.
Bill had a bell from an IC steam locomotive they scrapped in his front yard in Flossmoor but I don't know more than that. And my grandfather built a 2-story garage to house his Passenger pigeons in Blue Island using wood from scrap cars.

CSSHEGEWISCH, I've noticed some time warps on this forum before, but you seem to have been caught up in one.   I know you have been here longer than I have, but under your avatar it says you have been a member since March 2016, and yet you were posting back in 2007.    How did you do that?

"76" as in "Spirit of '76."  The American Revolution is a favorite field of study for me, I'm fascinated by the period.

No, I wouldn't have wanted to live back then, I like my indoor plumbing, but a one-day visit by a time machine if it were possible would be interesting.  So far the closest I can get is Colonial Williamsburg, which is a fun place at any rate.

Not quite a time warp.  I joined the forums in December 2001 but I had password problems a few years back which accounts for the change in my seniority date.

Sometimes a blessing, sometimes a curse.  Was reading the article in Classic Trains about the Slumbercoach.  The berths were only 72" long...

At least you don't have to dodge low-hanging light fixtures and doorframes.

Was just there this week.  Platform appeared to be in service-can't speak for usage. Took CSS Chicago to Michigan City and back.  The line impressed me...as did the overall poverty of the area as seen from the tracks–decline of the industrial mid-west.

South Shore's ridership has held up fairly well.  While I will concede that the industrial output of the Calumet Region has declined, much of what is still there is not that visible from the South Shore with the possible exception of US Steel in Gary and Arcelor Mittal (formerly Bethlehem Steel) at Burns Harbor.
