PRR PANHANDLE

Looking for info on PRR panhandle div. out of chicago through Dolton.
I am looking into modeling this line but am a little fuzzy remembering
it. I grew up in Dolton in the 70's. Any info will help. thanks[:)]

Good luck, institutional memory for PRR is about as bad as NYC when you go west of the Allegheny molehills. Might want to pay a visit to the archivist at the Illinois railway museum and spend a day thumbing through out-of-print books.

Now the Panhandle ran through Dolton(there was a small yard there) then the Bernice Cutoff<connection with SC&S-The South Chicago and Southern> and then, Lansing in Illinois before crossing over into Indiana where it first encountered Munster(the crossing was called Maynard) where it crossed the Monon and GTW. Next up was Schererville(Hartsdale) where The Panhandle crossed both Michigan Central Kankakee line and the Elgin, Joilet and Eastern at grade. It also ducked under the NYC Danville(IL) branch here. There was a small interchange yard located to the east of the main line between Junction Ave and Kennedy Ave. it ran SE to NW. Might have been 10 tracks wide. It is still there but reduced to 4-5 tracks that are used mainly to load coated pipe from Midwest Pipe Coating. At one time this was a busy place. After here it was mainly nothing else until Crown Point. From there it was Leroy, then Hebron, IN. Again a long strech before North Judson,IN where interchange was made with C&O of I and also Erie. thence on the Logansport. After that I am not sure. I hope this helps. I think that The Panhandle Chicago Terminal was PRR 59th Street.

A thought about modeling this line. If you use off-line staging you could model the most impressive parts. Maybe in this order. Dolton(brickyard that was there) The SC&S interchange and Maynard and if you have room you could do Hartsdale. This would allow the greatest variety of railroads and also the greatest variety ot equipment since as we know now, interchanges are the "Universal Industry" Not sure on passenger trains because by the time I got there-Late 60's into the 1970's, they were gone as is the Panhandle itself. A victim of Conrail's rationalization I guess.

Rick, you forgot LaCrosse. I remember the C&O paralleling the Panhandle southeast of there, but at LaCrosse it would have had to cross the Monon (and probably interchange with PM and CA&S back in the days).

There is a picture in Don Ball's PRR book of a Lines West N1/N2 2-10-2 coming under the NYC Danville Branch at Hartsdale. That bridge could be a view block for modeling purposes although it would make neccesary the loss of Hartsdale Yard or at least a moving of same.
This topic got me to remembering raifaning this line during the PC days. I recall Alco's and EMD's running through Crown Point and parrelling US231 east from there to Hebron. I guess the Panhandle would be a good topic for a book or at least a section of a book on NW Indiana/Chicago Metro railroads.
