...I believe the man was a local fellow and that track is a well used line....I'd say circumstances just came together and caused a mistake to be fatal....as we all know mistakes are made by all of us each day....just without the effect of this one.

I am deaf.

My prayers for everyone involved. I think we will not learn the full story until the investigation is complete.

It is difficult to pick up vibrations of a puny train whistle that is being drowned out by the trembling earth being shaken by horsepower and rolling mass. At the volumes most hard of hearing can pick up the whistle. Profound deaf cannot but feel them.

If the deaf man was a local living near the track then he should know about the trains. Regardless I must also say that deaf can really use the other senses such as eyes and are observant as an eagle unless distracted by something else.

Or simply looking both ways before you cross that tracks. I do it, and I can usually hear a train 5 minutes before it gets there at 40MPH!

Now if they could just get them for people who can't listen

...No update in todays paper. Guess we'll have to assume it was a total oversight and carelessness and....unfortunate step on the person's part....

Feel bad for the crew. That's gotta suck. But, you would think a person who had lived that long in a world being deaf, would have checked before walking across a railroad track.
Deaf, blind or not, once again it is an example of people not takign railroad tracks seriously. Feel bad for him and his family, big price to for one act of stupidty.

Sounds like suicide by train. I've known many Deaf people and they all could tell you there's a train coming without seeing it. their working senses are so attuned they could smell a difference in the air, and as stated above the vibrations would have been a very clear indication. Also, none of them would every think to cross railroad tracks anywhere but at a crossing and even then they would check both directions multiple times before crossing.

I highly doubt he had a dog woth him, since the dog would have pulled him right out of harms way.

The part about the dog was extreme tongue in cheek, playing on the blind concept, though in this case the victim was in fact deaf. Actually, I think there are dogs trained for the deaf, though the practice of using helper dogs is best known for the blind.

If it was a suicide, it is particularly sad that he chose McDonalds as a final meal.[xx(]

Keep in mind I have warped sense of humor.[:0][;)]

Well, like I've said before, Darwin is watching.

Beware of McDonalds, that stuff will kill you.

....It is my understanding he was carrying some McDonald's food and walking next to the tracks...{not at a crossing}, and conincidence would have it he stepped on the tracks to cross just as the train was upon him....

Are you serious??? I didn't see any smileys.

Yes, the dog was barking loudly, but couldn't be heard over train's horn. [:0][;)]Strange thing about deaf people, they don't hear very well.

I'm not making fun of the victim here, just taking a good natured poke at Coburn.[:o)]

I'm kind of surprised that he couldn't feel the vibration of the ground as a warning that the train was coming.

What was he doing walking on the tracks? If it was at a crossing, there should be ample visuals (lights and gates) to indicate an on-coming train. But if he was walking on the tracks or crossing the guage, he was (tragically) in the wrong. Imagine how the train crew must feel, not knowing the man was deaf.

Deaf man victim of train accident....
Posted by Modelcar on Thursday, November 24, 2005 11:13 AM
....A deaf man walked onto the tracks here in Muncie yesterday and was struck by an oncoming train....Second pedestrian killed here this year. Paper reported operator of train blew his "whistle"....Train was only traveling about 15 mph.
Paper also related train was "hauling semi trailers that were lifted on rail wheels"....Of course it was the Triple Crown train that travels daily through this area. Other incident was this past June when a person in a electric wheel chair become stuck in the crossing and was hit by oncoming train....
