Canadian Pacific & Union Pacific

Does anyone know how much of a connection there is between Canadian Pacific & Union Pacific[?]

I ask because a buddy of mine said these two railways were ready to merge. This was just after Burlington Northern & Santa Fe merged.

I've Union Pacific engines in Cranbrook, B.C. which is about a hour north of the Kingsgate/Eastport border where the two companies have exchanged cars for years. Also I've seen Union Pacific engines on the Canadian Pacific mainline just east of Kamloops, B.C. as part of the front point engines hauling frieght & in Saskatoon as part of the front point on a potash run going to one of the two mines just west of Saskatoon.

They have had marketing arrangements and agreements meant to boost traffic for both lines for at least 5 years but nothing on the merger front.

In this neck of the woods I actually see more CN engines running on UP than CP engines. They very well could be leased or payback for hours used.

In my neck of the woods, on the CPR main, I see a few UP locos, but the further south you get, the more UP you see, slowly blending from 1 railroad to another. I certainly hope they don't merge, they are too similar already.

The main coordinated operatons between CP and UP are via the old Spokane International Railroad (now part of UP) through Idaho.

However, if BNSF and CN decided to merge (that speculation has come up again), I suspect that UP and CP would have little choice but to merge with each other. Not the prettiest combination, and I'm sure we could manage to foul up yet another merger without trying too hard.
