Does anyone know how much of a connection there is between Canadian Pacific & Union Pacific[?]

I ask because a buddy of mine said these two railways were ready to merge. This was just after Burlington Northern & Santa Fe merged.

I've Union Pacific engines in Cranbrook, B.C. which is about a hour north of the Kingsgate/Eastport border where the two companies have exchanged cars for years. Also I've seen Union Pacific engines on the Canadian Pacific mainline just east of Kamloops, B.C. as part of the front point engines hauling frieght & in Saskatoon as part of the front point on a potash run going to one of the two mines just west of Saskatoon.
