The October 1989 Trains should have an article on that.

Yea, but the leasers were more likley to be rent-a-wrecks than these new SD90MACs.

In the 1970s Precision National leased a lot of locomotives.
A lot of the railroads had companies buy the new locomotives for them and then leased them for periods like 15 years. During 1984 Chessie had 40 B&O GP40s come off lease and suggested owner GATX lease them to CP Rail. That lasted for 4 years.
During the late 1980s GATX had about 65 locomotives on lease, National Helm Leasing had about 25 ex BN SD45s (several went to MRL later) and National Railway Leasing had about 20 leasers. All of these locomotives were GMDs.
You can look at these.

At the time of its bankruptcy, the Milwaukee Road was so short on serviceable power that they leased a number of PNC units (SD 24's?) that had originally come from the Southern. They had the distinctive high mounted Southern nose bell. Some of these, I believe, later on ended up on the C&NW after rebuilding as SD-18's. Somebody else with a better knowledge of the subject can jump in here and correct me on this. Anyway, we're talking late 1970's-early 1980's.

In the August 1994 issue of Trains there are a couple of photographs of a GATX SD40-2 in the article about the Oil Cans. If I remember correctly, the title is "Hot Seat on the Cans".

Extra 2200 South's from that era had good rosters and came out reguarly enough that there were decent updates as new engines went into the lease fleets, etc. - I know they did a feature on Precision. Also RELCO was leasing a lot of ALCo switchers (including HHs) to elevators and other industrial users.
