I know the only thing that was going through my mind when I saw pictures of the new locos was seeing these 5 years later as the third unit in a foreign railways consist, paint peeling and filthy black. Some railroads open the engine room doors to cut down on the amount of grease and oil inside the engine compartment. Most wash racks I have seen are actually much too small to do a very good job. The type of soap used can also make a difference. Some of the better soaps contain chemicals that can cause burns to a person and have been discontinued by the railroads to avoid injury to the workers. This is a public relations move (painting them that way) and it would be counter productive to allow them to get too dirty. Eolafan (a.k.a. Jim) Reply Join our Community!
