Keeping UP Heritage Units clean
Posted by eolafan on Monday, August 22, 2005 7:41 AM
[2c] As one who realizes that it is nearly impossible for a railroad like U.P. to keep all of its locomotives clean for us railfans all of the time (no matter how much we would like to compare the railroads to U.P.S. who keeps all of its trucks clean all of the time!), I certainly hope U.P. goes the extra mile to keep the Heritage Units nice and clean. This is a public relations move (painting them that way) and it would be counter productive to allow them to get too dirty.

If you have ever watched the "happenings" at a railroad service facility you will notice that all engines go through the wash rack at one point in their servicing. Some railroads open the engine room doors to cut down on the amount of grease and oil inside the engine compartment. Most wash racks I have seen are actually much too small to do a very good job. The type of soap used can also make a difference. Some of the better soaps contain chemicals that can cause burns to a person and have been discontinued by the railroads to avoid injury to the workers.

This is an interesting thought.

I know the only thing that was going through my mind when I saw pictures of the new locos was seeing these 5 years later as the third unit in a foreign railways consist, paint peeling and filthy black.

They couldn't keep the "flag" units clean, so it would be disrespectful to the USA if the Heritage units received better care than the flag units. [}:)]

heh, I suppose not. but it is an interesting conflict when you think about it. the philosophy that UP somehow "owes more respect" to the heritage paint schemes honoring railroads that don't even exist anymore, than to the good ol USA.

As long as those heritage units are out there protecting copyrights I don't think UP will care how dirty they get.

Union Pacific will probably try to keep these units pretty clean for now. I mean, come on, they've just started this. I'm sure any railroad wants to keep engines clean when they have a brand new paint job on them or if it's a new engine. Probably one reason the "flag" UP engines get dirty more often now is because the paint scheme isn't considered "new" anymore...not because they disrespect the United States.
Long live the BNSF .... AND its paint scheme. SchemerBob

I bet that they get washed regularly. Washing won't be needed nearly as often if they'd keep them of those [censored] coal trains!

Oh, I dunno, I think that we should invade Union Pacific, and liberate all those poorr abused fallen flag tradmarks, set up a democratic from of order amenable to our own,, destroy any WMD thay may have stockpiled and pointing at our children in their schools, and give the flag units a good washing on our way out, ...just to show 'em who's boss [}:)]

I beg to differ! UPS does a "good job" keeping things looking nice, but they aren't currently as clean as they have a reputation for! (Especially the inside of trailers... bleccchhh!)

Not to bring this back up again, I've seen the MP unit 3 times now, twice in the lead, once as the third unit on a UP train (the air conditioning went out in Little Rock just prior do departure, so due to the unions and things, they put her in the back, the engineer did say that he wouldn't mind being hot, just to run that unit (ex-MOP employee). These employees take great pride in them, I'm sure there would be some sort of an outcry from employees if they did get too dirty. Like I said, in the 3 times I've seen it, it had a little bit of grime behind the trucks on the fuel tank, that's about it. The last time I saw it was last Saturday. I also saw the Katy then, but it was on it's first revenue run southward, and at the time I saw it, it was as far south as it had ever been, so I have no idea about how clean that one will stay.

It will be interesting to see where they will clean it. UP shut down the wash rack at north platte indefinately. It's challenge enough finding power that runs well, let alone clean. Hope it improves.
