I've seen several brand new SD70ACe locomotives at UP's North Salt Lake yard. Nothing like a locomotive with that "factory fresh" look. Even if it's a strange looking locomotive. [:p]

FWIW, I saw a Union Pacific EMD SD70ACe at Rochelle, IL on Monday May 30th. The guys at the railroad park commented "she looks brand new.." They were right!

Electro-Motive's SD70ACe model, which meets the 2005 U.S. EPA emissions standards, has been developed for the North American freight locomotive market. This model uses the 710 Series diesel engine and is rated at 4300 traction horsepower. The SD70ACe employs an AC (Alternating Current) traction system to develop high wheel-rail traction for heavy haul service. The SD70M-2 employs DC (Direct Current). The SD70M-2 is entirely different than the SD70M. EMD’s currently diesel locomotive production line are the SD70ACe's and SD70M-2's.

No, Chris, it's an SD70ACE with DC traction motors--basically an SD70M with Tier II emission controls. It'll have the flared radiators that look more like those on an SD80MAC or SD90MAC.

What constitutes an SD70M-2? It's not an SD70M with a different cab configuration is it?

By the end of the year the SD70ACe's and SD70M-2's will be working the rails on Kansas City Southern, Norfolk Southern, Canadian National and Montana Rail Link. CSX already has 20 Units and the Union Pacific is currently receiving part of their 115 Unit order.

BNSF is still interested in testing EMD's SD70ACe's after EMD installs distributed power on several units to allow BNSF to test them in DP coal service.

Since EMD was sold correct...? Will they still be producing locomotives in the future. Has anyone heard recent news on teh SD70-2 and if they have done testing or if any railroad is interested.
