Can't speak to Ausies, but UP tried this with the No 80 (later renumbered 8080) in 1960s.
Good writeup of this coal-burning gas-turbine-electric loco by Thos. R. Lee in The Streamliner, Vol. 16, No. 4, pp. 12-34. Many color photos, too.

Were not the Australians working on a coal-fired engine, using powdered coal and water as an injection mix?

Anyone know about this?

The ACE 3000 story is told in full on the "ultimate steam page" site,go to your favorite search engine and type in those keywords. Nothing larger than a scale model was ever built. The reasons are many,go to the website.......
Marlboro train:The two F59PHI locos were sold to a commuter agency, most of the cars were scrapped by Colorado Railcar before ever turning a wheel.

...Yes on the Marlboro train. I believe some or all of the equipment was sold off to various locations.

I think what happened is that oil got cheap again. I seem to recall seeing a photo of a frame with drivers though -- did that get scrapped?
Speaking of dead projects -- anyone remember the Marlboro cigarette excursion train?

What ever happened to the Ameican Coal Enterprises' modern steam loco? Has the project failed, or is it still in development?
