A funny thing happened on the way to the office
Posted by Hugh Jampton on Wednesday, April 13, 2005 9:15 AM
I was heading into work on the tram, as usual, and there was a car parked foul of the line outside of a shop. The tram driver stopped and tooted the horn a couple of times in order to attract the attention of the motorist. Eventually someone came out of the shop and stood by the car. The driver looked the other way down the road and than made a sweeping motion with their arms indicating that it was OK for the tram to swerve around the car. The tram driver opened the cab door, and in his best "trouble at mill" accent told the person that he couldn't swerve. The motorist again looked down the road and told the tram driver that he could swerve as there was no traffic coming the other way. Well,, the tram driver lost it a bit and shouted "It's bloody tram,, runs on t'bloody tracks!!!!. The motorist looked down at the tracks embedded in the roadway, looked at the tram driver and announced that they'd only be a minute and went back into the shop.. The tram driver got on the radio to the control centre so they could call the cops, but before they got there the motorist returned,. There was an exchange of words that are unrepeatable on a general forum, and the motorist got into their car and drove off. According to the conductor this sort of thing happens all the time, and the motorist will be getting a visit from the local constabulary in due course.

You're right - it is funny because it is so ridiculous! Another point for the "ME" generation!

That is classic...

Also helps explain the mentality of folks who drive around the gates... Trains can swerve and stop on a dime, can't they?.

Isn't that why new locos have steerable trucks?

Hugh, maybe the 'motorist' was a "Lurker".

Yes Dan,the "steerable trucks" make it easy to "swerve"
around all foreign objects found on tracks.

Being Crazy, keeps you from going "INSANE" !! "The light at the end of the tunnel, has been turned off due to budget cuts" NOT AFRAID A Vet., and PROUD OF IT!!

But aren't they self-steering? So the engineer wouldn't have to do anything.

The only part that surprises me, is the part where the person even bothered to come out at all. :-)

Write them a ticket or manhandle the keys from them to move the vehicle . . .
"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]

If trains can go around curves like they were on rails, why can't they swerve and stop on a dime?

I was on a trolley car in Pittsburgh that was trying to ease by an auto that was parked very close to the tracks. As the motorman moved the trolley very slowly several riders went to the windows to watch and the trolley leaned enough to hit the side of the auto.

hahahahahaha... I must remember that in future.
Our tram drivers are very good,, I've seen them pass parked cars with less than an inch to spare

I lived in Pittsburgh for a while back in the mid-60's, and this was a common occurrance on the 40 Mt Washington streetcar line, which was still running along with virtually all of the east end and the south side. When it happened (which it did even several times per trip every time I rode it), the motorman and all the guys on board would just get off, go surround the illegally parked car, and start bouncing it until we got it going well enough to bounce it up onto the curb/sidewalk. Then we'd all get back on and head on down the line.

It was well-known--almost an "unwritten law" that illegal parkers blocking the tracks were subject to bouncing.

Imagine doing that in today's litigous society.[(-D][(-D][:-,][banghead][banghead][banghead]

Streetcar collisions happen all the time, mostly because of people making U turns and somehow ending up on the ROW and getting their cars smashed up, or getting T-boned by the trains. It happens in Boston occasionally.

They do... The WRONG side!!!! Which is why I take the train, admittedly the trains run on the wrong side of the tracks,, but I'm not driving so it doesn't matter.
