Central PA Railfanning 101 advice needed please
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 8, 2005 11:34 PM

My life will be vastely changing in the next few months. I've had a total of 4 back surgeries, which has finally forced me to close my business, and back off of 15 hour days. So....

I would like to do more railfanning and photographing of
trains. Other than the school of hard knocks, where can you find
schedules, frequencies, and general place to go, and those were you will be thrown out of. I live in Lancaster County, PA. where we have NS,still lots of CR painted stuff, and Amtrack. Several trains a day on the Old PRR Keystone Corridor from Philly to H-burg. We also have the Strasburg RR and State RR Museum. My Real interest is in the R&N ( Reading & Northern ), I'm a coal cracker at heart, and do make it to Schuylkill county, Port Clinton, and Reading. And my Wife has relatives in Marysville so after I show face I head off to Enola or the Rockville Bridge. I just don't know the best times to when and where. And never find the observation bridge people talk about in Enola.
in Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Dave

Sorry to hear of your medical problems & wish you well in the future. My sons lives in Glenside North & East of Philly & there is NS action + Speta (2 lines) there. [:p][:o)][:)]

Dave, good luck in being well enough to do a bunch of railfanning. I'm a Pennsylvania native from way back and always have interest in the railways of Pennsylvania.
Is the traffic density down to just a few trains on the ex. Pennsylvania RR broadway route in eastern Pa....? From Harrisburg east is it 3 tracks now under the catenary...? Hard to believe that once saturated route is so quiet.....

Oh man, come to harrisburg and a little bit north. Get on the west shore across from harrisburg, and go up 11/15. Tracks right by the road. Then the rockville bridge is right up there, and no need for a scanner, as there is always something goin on.

"From Harrisburg east is it 3 tracks now under the catenary...? "

Thanks for the replies and concerns. In My area which is 35 miles east of H-burg it's 2 lines under catenary, but I've not seen an electric loco in 15 years. Amtrack all Day, and NS at night. They are in the process of replacing all standard rail with welded rail, and removing all crossings, so Amtrack can up their speed to 120mph. I have lots of MOW pics from the last year. And a ton of spikes ;) Thanks, Dave

Enola is a Great area....To find the Overview Bridge, you need to exit Rte 81 at the Enola Rte 11-15 exit and head south on 11-15 for perhaps a mile....You will come to a traffic light where 11-15 goes from 4 to 2 lanes as you head South into Enola...Make a right onto this Road at Light. This road is called Valley Rd. A very short distance on Valley make a right onto First Street and take it about a half mile up the hill until you make a right turn onto Miller....follow Miller up until it ends at a stopsign at Bella Vista Rd. Turn right here and follow Bella Vista about a mile...Road will then make a hard right and pass over 11-15. A short distance after this, you will come to the Iron Bridge over the West End of Enola....Park in a paved lot on the right before crossing the bridge and walk onto the bridge..High fences with viewing ports will allow photography. Continuing over the Bridge , the road renames to River Rd and you will eventually pass under the Rockville Bridge...immediately after passing under Rockville Bridge, on the right side, you can park in a gravel lot at the Marysville Boat Launch and Treatment Plant and get great views of trains coming onto the West end of Rockville Bridge. Continuning on River road into Marysville, you will make a left to go under the Mainline, and another hard left to bring you back out to 11-15 across from the old Marysville Trainstation, now a boat supply place. A left on 11-15 will take you up to Cove and Duncannon. Several gravel pulloffs and lots will allow you to park trackside and watch the action...Hope this helps...Dave Williams @ nsaltoonajohnstown@yahoogroups.com

The Norfolk Southern's Pittsburgh Line has some good locations for photographing or watching trains. I suggest Lower Bailey Road in Newport, PA, Thompsontown, Millersville, Mifflin, Lewistown, Mt Union, and Tyrone.. Get a copy of the DeLorme Pennsylvania atlas, and it will give you a good idea where the railroad lines in central Pennsylvania.

Yeah, I've been to all those spots myself...a quick direction on how to get to Aqueduct, Lower Bailey Rd and Newport, using the scenic route, is by 11-15 North from Marysville until it goes to 4 lane..exit at Duncannon, make a right at end of off ramp, then another right to follow road through center of Duncannon. At end of downtown, a left onto 849 West will take you up a hill and over 11-15. Make a right onto Aqueduct Rd by a Brick house and after a mile or two, you will start paralleling the tracks...there will be several roads interesecting with Aqueduct Rd that lead to grade crossings where you can set up...avoid the private farm roads, which are usually posted private property. This road will eventually rename to Lower Bailey Rd and will lead to Newport, but there will be a rough couple of miles of unpaved road....There are a few roads that bypass this by jumping back to 849 and bypassing the unpaved section to Newport......Dave Williams @ nsaltoonajohnstown@yahoogroups.com
