I skipped a few parts because it's late, but that was fantastic! I've been to Connellsville and rafted at Ohiopyle but the rest was new to me, other than in articles.

Don't overlook the WMSR operating out of Cumberland to Frostburg using the 1309 steam engine as well as other power.
My affinity is slanted towards the Pittsburgh-Harrisburg for railfanning, but I've yet to see anything as beautiful as the trip between Cumberland and Pittsburgh.

It's a big area and a very rural one at that. Non-railfan wives often have a good time there nonetheless by doing some of these things:
1. Whitewater rafting or kayaking at Ohiopyle; 2. Renting a bike at Ohiopyle and going for a long ride on the trail that used to be the Western Maryland RR; 3. Picnicing nearby at Cucumber Falls; 4. Touring world-famous Fallingwater; 5. Visiting or staying at Seven Springs Resort; 6. Touring historic Harper's Ferry; 7. Touring Cumberland, MD, which looks charming from Amtrak's windows; 8. Walking or biking the C&O Canal towpath. Also, while it's in Pittsburgh, Kennywood amusement park is well worth a visit. I sure hope you'll get to ride the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad out of Cumberland.
It's not Manhattan, it lacks fine cuisine, large malls and has spotty cell phone coverage, but this area is very beautiful, as the movie shows, with plenty of things to enjoy outdoors, and is certainly worth a weekend visit.

Although I would point out that Harpers Ferry is about two hours east of Cumberland, so Sand Patch and the affiliated region is going to be more than three hours away.
Finally had a chance to watch it.. spectacular... I have a cycling trip planned for later this year which isn't far from there.. The Great Allegheny Passage... which follows an abandoned rail line (P&LE) from Cumberland to Pittsburgh.

As info - P&LE is Pittsburgh to Connellsville and it is WM from Connellsville to Cumberland and shares the right of way with the WMSR between Frostburg and Cumberland.

If you're that close - I'd def'n make the effort to go to EBT. I haven't seen the 1309, but the WMSR trip wasn't that impressive to me for the cost ( 734 was running back then). *shrugs*.
