No Train Crew Should be Subjected to This
Posted by Richard A on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 11:37 AM
See this link for another example of gross stupidity. Thankfully no one was physically hurt. I always wonder about the mental anguish suffered by train crews, though.

We used to find them on the Montana / Idaho border on the tracks in the deep (10' or more) troughs plowed by the rotaries. Fortunately train speeds were slow at 25 mph and most of the stupid riders were able to get their machines turned around to make a dash for the nearest open crossing.. It would still give your heart muscle a shot of adrenalin.

If UP can sue a jerk for trying (and failing) to commit suicide by driving his car straight at a train (Yes - down the track, not at a crossing/ Castle Rock, CO), NS' law department can certainly go after this loser.

Gross stupidity is an understatement! I've said many times that if I die at the throttle it'll be of a heart attack caused by some idiot like this one. Grade crossings are scary enough for me, so I'm glad I don't run snow country any more. Truth is, no matter where you run there's always some kind of idiot to deal with. The snowmobilers have a long way to go to corner the market on stupidity!

Well, on the bright side: 1 less snowmobile. Now if we can just get rid of a few million of those ATV's...

Couple on snowmobiles drove down the center of a railroad spur in my town the other night. Lucky for them the train hasn't used the line in 3 years and the switch is gone but I'm sure CN still wouldn't be happy for them using thier line as a path.

And as for one less snowmobile...not cool! It's one of the few things I enjoy besides railfanning. Up here in WI, what else is there to do this time of year! And I do it responsilbly too!

When I did my snowmobile operators course, the one thing we looked at was train safety and snowmobiling. There was a video, and they had a mock collision between a train and a snowmobile. Pure stupidity to ride a snowmobile between the rails. Its hard enough to get a snowmobile accross the tracks, let alone when you're parallel to the rails.

This sort of thing happens quite a lot in western New York. At one time we even had some geniuses set up a marked snowmobile trail for a rally on a secondary track used by 80 car unit coal trans and heavy local trains moving rock salt and other commodities. Only the arrest of the organizers and the cancellation of the rally seemed to get the point across to these nimrods...

Another act of stupidity!

The crew of the train should be allowed to sue the moron for causing undue stress.

Just my two cents

Back in the late 90's in Manitowoc, WI, a sled club had built an ice pack over the rails to get to the other side between two farmers fields. WC 1503 was the culprit and rolled over upon impact. Forced one guy onto permenent disabillity! He was a close family friend and had a few weeks til retirement. There are many people with no brains when it comes to riding sleds(snowmobiling) and trains. I for one, stop at every railroad track I get to and wonder...whens the next train coming?[:D][:D]

I wonder if the railroad has contemplated a civil suit against this guy to recover the costs of 1) fixing the locomotive and 2) medical costs from the crew. (From what I read on these forums, the crew probably has some "pain and suffering" issues, too.)

I'm always amazed at how smart people get after they do really dumb things and their wallets are surgically removed by learned practitioners of the legal community.
