Visits to the white coat and vampire today.  Now getting ready for this weekend's ARRL Field Day - 24 hours of seeing how many other similar stations we can contact.

We'll be running four stations most of the time.  This year, our club even got a special call sign (K2I) for the event.

A key feature is that we operate "off the grid" for this event.  Generator, solar, battery, anything but plugged into the wall.

Sitting here waiting on more info on the SF Bay area (Martinez?) Amthrax crossing incident that involves fatalities. As per usual, the newsworkers are short on facts on long on unsubstantiated accusations. My 2 Cents

A long day on the radio for the ARRL Field Day - I stayed awake for most of it, spent a lot of time with the radio.

Today is recovery.  Finish unloading the truck and maybe catch up on a little more sleep.

I did get a few nice shots of the sunset and the next sunrise with the drone.  Have to get them downloaded and maybe posted on-line.

All our posters"  It has not yet been a warning but there is the possibility of a Carrington  event.

A Carrington event will have a much larger effect on the eastern US/Canada that wester US/Canada due to the much higher conductivity of the deep rocks in the west. The higher conductivity allows for more eddy currents to flow which partially counteracts the fields generated by currents flowing in the ionsphere.

One other saving grace is that the magnetic north pole is further away from the populated ares in North America than it was in 1859.

Ns had a train on the main uptown after work.Csx had some ptc issues around west standley the other day.Signal would be green but the train would be put into suppression or emergency. All set to give hugs later this week.Yard is turning a shade of brown now.Wouldn't surpirse me if we had extra fire calls for fireworks.

Sitting here waiting on more info on the SF Bay area (Martinez?) Amthrax crossing incident that involves fatalities.

Here's what I could find in local papers:

https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/06/26/emergency-crews-responding-after-amtrak-train-collides-with-vehicle-near-brentwood/

https://pioneerpublishers.com/amtrak-train-crashed-into-semi-truck-near-brentwood/

The incident appears to be near here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/37%C2%B056'28.2%22N+121%C2%B037'29.0%22W/@37.9411712,-121.626922,558m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x290f2faec2ffebba!7e2!8m2!3d37.9411672!4d-121.6247275?hl=en

As far as 'Carrington events' I would hope to get good predictions directly from this woman whose reports appear on the Ham Nation podcast.

THis is why many amateur radio operators store radios in "Faraday cages" (metal garbage cans and similar containers), so they can communicate when every other comunications device is toast...

Most folks actually have a protective device right in their home, ready to use at a moment's notice.  It's their microwave oven, which is nicely shielded to keep the radiation in, so it will also keep the radiation out...

More warnings about Li Ion batteries.  This time charging.  This poster is moving my items that are being charged to a concrete block enclosure.  Main idea is do not charge if battery has just been used .  Also wait until battery has completely cooled before charging and then after charging cooled.

Have not decided on my computers and cell phones except do not charge phones for least hour after using.

Haven't had any problems with my various hand-held radios.  Those are the biggest rechargeables I have.

Advise on EV fires is to bring lots of water.  As I've mentioned before, a GM rep stated after a fire at GM's Proving Grounds, that these will be "protect the exposure" events.  We've had several fires in this area from scooters.

I saw someplace that scooter fires are a daily event in NYC...

Delivered some raffle tickets I'd printed to a fire department in another part of the county, and stayed for their parade.  A sign of the times - not a single band.

On my way home I spotted a rail inspection vehicle in a farmyard.  Couldn't miss it - yellow and white and big letters on the side - "rail inspection vehicle."  Didn't stop.  Must be relatively new (at that location, not the equipment).  I don't go that way often, but it's the first time I've seen it.  There are no tracks there, and never were.  It's several miles off the nearest tracks.

Evening

Ns came back in our building again today.Looked like they had a train stopped after work too.Went to Deshler to trim around the park and museum.Along with usual csx stuff the dispatcher asked the local to be facing southward when they went back to Lima.So they took the train north, backed down the Nw wye, then took the SW wye and used the north crossover to get back on the main and go south.Meanwhile B 522 was waiting to go into the sw siding. The cpls were showing all the aspects today.Met a grandfather and grandson and showed them around. Can't wait to go back for tomorrow.College boy is spending the night there as well.

Still hoping to get to Deshler this year.  The white coats aren't cooperating.

Saw the KCS unit holding on the SW wye.

Yesterday was the 30th anniversary celebration on the Adirondack Railroad.  I couldn't work in train service, so I spent time with the drone in the air, captureing various activities.

Today we (FD) catered (barbequed chicken) a class reunion.  We'll try not to do any more of those.  The estimated attendance was 100.  Fifty-seven showed up.  We didn't hold them to the 100 meals, but we should have.  It was a lot of work for what we got out of it.
