Our Firefighter Safety Seminar was generally a success - one speaker facing a four hour drive AND some nasty road conditions rightfully backed out.  But I got a replacement for another that had other plans.  Still left us short an hour from what was planned but no one complained about leaving a little early.

Everyone ate well.  A local restaurant provided lunch.

I still have to do the certificates, but that's the easy part, comparatively speaking.

I'm glad it's over for another year.

The no-show was going to speak on solar systems.  He offered to come in later and do a presentation, and I will be taking him up on it.

Nasty fire in Watertown this morning - dispatched as "fully involved," which is really unusual for a fire at 11 AM in a house three houses off a main drag.

Turns out it was most likely arson.  Haven't heard a cause otherwise, but I'm guessing there was some accelerant involved, which resulted in the rapid spread.  The first engine out reported heavy smoke as they left their station about six blocks away.

Our away from motel has developed a mouse problem.  I had heard about it, but hadn't seen one until a couple of trips back.  I was sitting in the room's easy chair, my cooler (lid closed) next to me.  I heard something, and thought I saw some movement in the shadows under the night stand.  A few minutes later, Mickey jumped up on top of my cooler.  We both were startled and he took off.  I was only there a couple of hours before being ordered and I didn't see any more of him.

One co-worker was putting stuff in his room's refrigerator (I leave my stuff in my cooler) when he started to reach in for another item and discovered a mouse in it.  I know leave all my bags zipped and closed unless I'm actually needing to get into them.

Sounds like the finest in crew hotels.Ns has a manifest parked in our siding at work.Local company uptown was looking to see if their boxcar has arrived.(it's tomato paste we unload the boxcar and send it over on their trailers). With the manifest there it can not get to our dock to unload.Have been plenty on trains parked the past few days.Guessers say spring fever this weekend.Probably will get a few things out of the shed.

Well it could have been 'Hand the Tank' brown bear that has been mentioned in the news recently.

Enjoying some relatively mild weather - just about perfect for syruping (maple) - below freezing overnight and above during the day.

Piles notwithstanding, most of our snow here is gone.  There's still plenty at higher elevations.

Thursday is packing day, and Friday travel to Vermont for a train show.  When I signed up to do the show, gas was a lot cheaper, but we'll tough it out.

My trusty waterbed decided to spring a leak, and in an impossible to patch spot (corner seam).  The new mattress is on it's way.  Last night I was about to climb into the bed when I noticed more water than I should have, so the thing got drained in the middle of the night.  As I was trying to get comfortable in the recliner, it occurred to me that right over my head there was a perfectly good king sized regular bed in my "guest room."  I'll be sleeping there tonight...

Ns still had a boxcar on our dock after work. They have more cars uptown and sent a westbound stack train.Got a tip that the former power station for and interurban line was taken out.We went to Stryker to check it out.Even with the spike in gas prices curiosity got the best of us.We went through Bryan and saw a big hook and some track panels for a crossover. We got to county road 6 and the other building(whats left of the walls) was still there.Matt and I also saw an eastbound Loram railgrinder.Did have a waterbed with foam backing too.Back did not like it after awhile.Fun draining that and setting it out for the garbage man.Time to get cleaned up.Tomorrow is Friday.

Did have a waterbed with foam backing too.

Mine have all been full motion - no baffles.  It doesnt take long for them to settle down.

When I was living in California, there was an outfit that was selling waterbeds with both a heater (I have a heater) and a vibrator (I don't have that).  Somehow they apparently aroused the wrath of some folks who thought that was obscene.  Somewhere I have a pin from that kerfluffle (a radio station got involved) that say's "I'm for Sensuality..."

Drove six hours today (seven actually...) - two to pick up the show materials and four to get to the site of the show in Vermont.

Except they postponed it a week because of the storm.

My FD is doing a chicken BBQ next weekend, so I can't come back over.

My room is non-refundable, so I'm "enjoying" a mini-vacation, except with the forecast storm, I can't even go out sightseeing.

Oh, well.  I was looking forward to meeting Harrison, too.

The extra hour was the wild goose chase my GPS sent me on.  The poor darling wanted me to take a ferry that's not running right now, and after I did a quick check of a paper map and figured out where I actually wanted to go, "she" spent the next 20 minutes trying to get me to turn around and go back to the ferry slip.

Ironically, the trip planner I accessed before I left had me going over the bridge I needed to actually go over, although the route (all surface roads) was a bit convoluted.  "Turn onto the Old Corderoy Road..."  It's just hard to read instructions going down a winding country road.  And pretty much my entire trip was on such roads...

60's and sunny yesterday

Started to rain overnight and began to snow about 8 AM

Snow plow just made a pass on my street.

Nice being retired - I don't have any place I am required to be.

Unless you want to, of course.  That's my problem...

Snowplow is doing the lot outside my hotel window right now.  Still snowing, but I don't know as they will get the forecast amount.

Haven't been watching the temperatures, but it was pretty obvious when I cleaned off the truck to go after some supper that it started off with ice last night.  Probably 3" to 4" of snow, and still snowing as I headed into town from the hotel.

Hopefully it'll all be done snowing and I'll have decent roads for the drive home tomorrow.

Nice, bright sun here in northern Vermont this morning - good for the trip home.  Report from the home front is for the same thing there, so hopefully the roads are in good shape.

It'll be a much better ride than the trip over - which was over some very winding roads, not to mention rough.

The weather here wasn't as bad as forecast, but it was still pretty nasty.  They probably could have held the train show, but...
