It gets stranger by the day. Have been a print subscriber since 1971. Today when I was logged in I could not read the news wire as I had my 8 views, despite being a subscriber. But, when I log out, then I can read all the articles and the comments. Go figure, Kalmbach doesn't.

Dysfunction is spelled "Kalmbach".

Just now, on my phone, I was able log into Trains.com, using the same email and password combo that was deemed unworthy yesterday. And AFAIK, it was not counting the number of News Wire stories I read.

Tomorrow I'll see if things work on my computer ...

Stay tuned.

Feel free not to answer, as it's really not my business, but why would you want to log out?

Seems like in this joint, if you're in it might pay to stay in!

but why would you want to log out?

Someone having multiple accounts (eg sockpuppets) might be one example.

CO, I don't get what you're saying. "Sockpuppets?"

Multiple accounts here? Why???

There are more reasons than sock-puppetry.  Restarting the computer, updating the browser, or conducting something like a CCleaner 'broom sweep' of files would all justify formally logging out and then back in again with a 'clean' set of permissions.

Of course, if those permissions are being dinged with by the gremlins, you might want to do as I do and just let sleeping cookies lie.

Any Web site with 'proper' security automatically logs people off every so often, as a matter of policy, and I think Kalmbach might want to consider the same.  With a 'remember me' option enabled (and it is not just 'client-side' on a program like the one RyPN uses) it is simple to one-click log-in again.  But that presumes that you get the prompt, your information appears correctly, and the site produces pages rather than the repetition of death.

I looked up sockpuppet. I had not heard that term.

Odd to think that someone might have more than one identity here. I doubt it, but who knows?

I have no doubt that there are several sock puppets inhabiting this forum.

Just to be abundantly clear, I was not suggesting that I suspected Blue Streak of being one, I was just addressing your question.

As far as "why", well there are just  some people who seldom tolerate opinion  opposed to their own.  Sockpuppetry allows them to fortify the ranks by creating like-minded allies. Or, alternately by creating "the dog did it" style opponents.

In that same vein, not everybody who is branded a "troll" is necessarily the villain.  The term "troll" is frequently employed by members of ad hoc "good ol boy" networks  as a means to shore-up and reinforce groupthink.

If you're ever really bored some day and have nothing to do, go over to wikipedia and start reading about "gaslighting", and pay particular attention to the "see also"  block of related terms and concepts at the end.  It can make for a very interesting day of reading.

Sara T
Oohh, yeah: Deep Purple, Smoke on the Water!

Hey Sara, I read something recently that had me rolling on the floor with laughter.  Apparantly a lot of guitar shops across the US have signs on the walls that say:

"Do NOT test the guitars by playing "Smoke On The Water!"

Apparantly they've been driven crazy by kids playing "Dum-dum-dum, dum-dum-da-dum, dum-dum-dum, dum-dum!" over the past several decades!

I didn't take it that way. And I doubt anyone else did.

"Do NOT test the guitars by playing "Smoke On The Water!"

If I remember correctly, the movie "Wayne's World" included a scene in a guitar shop with a sign stating "No Stairway to Heaven."

I remember back in the day, at school when they issued us all Conn song flutes for music class.  "Smoke on the Water" was the riff most of us spent our free time trying to perfect. Which the music teacher was not entirely enthusiastic about. ( I, of course, focused on the live "Made in Japan" version)

Speaking of riffs, I find this guy   (Vimeo) to be somewhat impressive for his ability to transition from one song to the next, fairly seamlessly (warning 100 riffs in 12 minutes)

I find that for some reason, the only story that tells me I am over the 8 article limit, is when I try to open yesterday's NewsWire article about Amtrak's accounting.  I can open any other story without problem.  Was that article locked?

I had a very cordial email exchange with Kat at Kalmbach customer service today. She was quite helpful regarding an issue with my account. And she told me that they are tweaking the website, and consequently there will inevitably be times when things don't function right.

So I said I'd be patient. My guess is that things will settle down fairly soon.

I have the same issue.  Apparently both of us are members of the Great Unwashed who haven't signed up to pay the extra amount for "Unlimited Access".  That's my guess anyway.  I had the same issue as the original poster to this thread, cleared my cache, and cured the problem.  Clearing the cache didn't create the problems with other websites that I thought it would, which was nice.  The latest issue is that the little message at the extreme top right indicates that I'm logged in, but I couldn't reply to any of the comments, and I couldn't log out to log in again and hope that cured the problem.  I had to create a new screen name to be able to submit a reply.  I don't know what Kalmbach's folks are doing to the website, but I WISH THEY WOULD QUIT!!!

They have been tweeking things for the 18 years I have been participating - without ever coming to a totally effective resolution.

I can now get into the article.  Most important article on Amtrak in a while.

What I would REALLY like to see the Kalmbach people address is, why is it always this place asking me to flush my cookies to continue participating here?

I participate regularly in about a dozen online message boards, AND NONE OF THE REST OF THEM put their regulars through this nonsense with near the frequency that this place does...something about the way this place is operated is to blame, ....not us.

I don't believe the fact that access here being "free" is any excuse for poor stewardship, many other boards that I frequent have managed to roll out new software without placing the burden of functionality on the end users.  So what is it about this place that continually gets it wrong, and they just sweep it under the carpet imploring us to "flush our cookies and hope for the best"?

It would be comforting to know that was all that is to blame.

Admittedly sometimes I give people more credit than they deserve. But I just can't get over the feeling that this is not all due to just dumb happenstance.

This situation is pathetic.  Terrible, terrible customer service.  No response to emails complaining about the inability to login and use Newswire.  They haven't posted any updates to the forums, or even acknowledged a problem exists.
