Joe: I was just amusing myself last nite thinking I might like to get out of the ice we always get and move some place more to my liking.

Let's see: California is either burning or drowning. East Coast gets their annual bath and debris scattering. Texas suffers from horrible humidity, which is probably almost as bad as ice. (Houston Ed has some places that might not be so bad...) Daughter lives in Bemidji - couldn't pay me enough to live there. Deep freeze and snow up to your tutu in winter and mosquitoes the size of birds in summer.

Now the Ohio Valley isn't doing so well. Deep south - well, it should just be left unsettled. Lived in Oklahoma - don't like tarantulas in my front yard and spending several nights in storm shelters. Modelcar may have a spot - haven't investigated that yet. Colorado is where most of the state of Nebraska moves, but there again - snow, snow, snow and like AZ - getting too populated!

Upstate New York and Maine - haven't investigated those yet - but Tree and Randy could fill me in. Still pretty cold and close to the annual mess in the east.

We live in Tornado Alley - but actually on one of the side streets. Plus, unlike the rest of the world - we get warned constantly. (maybe that's why our area has people that live to be very, very old).

Guess maybe there is no place like home...........maybe.................

Northern New York. Can't escape the snow (except this winter, so far) and it does get cold (although the forecast high today is 57 and it's already 50 at 8 am - high tomorrow is only 30, though), but it also gets nice in the summer. Life in the Thousand Islands is nice - gorgeous scenery a good part of the year, and plenty of water sports (and snow sports). The county has a population of about 65,000 - call it mostly rural. We're about 4 hours from Albany, Buffalo, Toronto and Montreal, 2-3 from Ottawa, one and a half from Syracuse. If you're big on culture, this isn't the place to be - you have to travel to the above mentioned places. NYC is about 6 hours, and you can take the train from Syracuse.

Trainwatching sucks, though - only a lightly travelled secondary, no passenger service (unless you cross the St Lawrence and catch VIA).

It's a nice place to live, I think. I don't have any compelling reasons to move away!

I keep telling you...

Move to the Texas hill country..

Like deer on your front lawn?

Got it!

Fishing, hunting, wandering through the woods and hills?

Got it!

Low humidity, mild winters and summers?

Got it!

Pecan, oak, pine, mesquite, juniper, ash and just about any kind of tree you can think of, even a few maples in Lost Maples Park...got that too!

Like strawberrries...Poteet, the strawberry capitol of Texas is right down the road from San Antonio...

Like pecans?

Seguin is nothing but pecan orchards...

Need trains to watch?

Look at the map from your Trains mag...San Antonio has lots and lots of trains.

Like eating out?

Real Mexican food?
How about French?
German?
All there in San Antonio, and you can do the Riverwalk in downtown...plus they got the Alamo.

Nothing like waking up in the morning, and going out on the back porch to have your first cup of coffee with the deer, and watching the sun rise over the city, all spread out in the valley below you!

So...GTT (gone to Texas)

Here in metro Chicago yesterday we had a record setting 62 degrees at O'Hare and really strong thunder storms last night with lots of lightning and much rain. Last week at this time we had just had about a foot of snow in some places in the area now that's all melted away. This weekend is supposed to be single digit highs with lows down to the minus 5 area! Talk about weather extremes!

C'mon Ed, don't lie too much about the low humidity although I will concede that a Chicago summer can get pretty muggy.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

So if the catfish is swimming across your front yard in Texas - the humidity is high. If it has to stay in the creek - the humidiy is low.

All Ed sayes is true - but the deer ate up my garden.

UPDATE from metro Chicago: Well, less than 24 hours after our record setting 62F with thunder and lightning and really hard rain, here it is at 30F and snow coming down fairly hard...MOMMY, HOW DO I DRESS FOR SCHOOL?

Now, it will all freeze over and then we get 4 inches of snow on top.

Hey Trees68, my good friends at the Rochester Philharmonic and at the world-famouse Eastman School of Music would get quite a shock of your saying that upstate New York is bereft of culture. And in the summer you have Canandaigua with its "Shed" theatre and all kinds of performances.

That's why I refer to our area (bounded by the Thruway, Lake Ontario, and the Adirondacks. Most would include the Adirondacks, too) as northern New York. Actually, I'd refer to Rochester as western. I dislike the "upstate" tag, since many people from 'the city' think of Westchester County as upstate.... Albany is in the woods somewhere, and is Buffalo even in NY state?

It's not that there's no culture here - Syracuse Symphony regularly visits, and we do have some local amateur theater. But if you want off-Broadway or or other big name entertainment, you have to wait for the 4 show local charity series in the summer, or head for one of the big cities (and I should have mentioned Rochester).

....By now I believe we all know there is NO utopia....and it seems many are experiencing weird and destructive Winter especially this January....We've just come through a massive ice storm that has some still without power since Wed. the 5th...550 crews in here from 9 states trying to put our power transmission system back together... Mid 60's yesterday for mid January...{we know something is out of whack doing that}, and warm still this morning but now falling temp today..but still raining...Probably have had 4 inches since yesterday morning...and maybe an inch of snow for tonight and we're under a wind advisory for this evening.....and single digits coming for lows this weekend starting tomorrow morning.....Golf course fairway that adjoins our back yard is starting to look like a lake as it does when conditions are as such....Oh well...we'll just have to ride it out....So, Jen...Sorry, it's not too nice here now either...Still have the streets loaded with stacks and stacks of tree limbs that came down with our ice storm....Oh, well guess that's enough...You get the picture.

Around this area,most people have two car garages;
but it seems lately that the homes for sale, are listed
as "two boat garages"
"Supposedly" the Ohio 'crested' today; However, they did not
include the 1.5" of rain we got today.

Yes, Locomutt......expect a bunch more coming down from Central Indiana....In the last 24 I'm sure we have had 3 1/2 to 4 inches of rain and now we're getting just a skiff of snow enough to make the tops of my shrubs a bit white...Temps have dropped here to about 32 degrees....We're not to get much snow...probably less than an inch. Then cold for the week end and Monday.

We're not supposed to get the (yuck) snow, but after an almost 70 degree high
yesterday, back to about 30 degrees tomorrow. Rain is SUPPOSED to be
ending tonight.

Hey Joe, Way off topic here,...but how much do you know about "The Celina Spillway"? The dam structure built at the west End of Grand Lake to regulate waterflow into Beaver Creek/Wabash river? If you know very much at all, I'd be very interested in an e-mail dialog, especially in context with the claimed versus actual net effect of the big "upgrade" they did in 1997....

LOVE the humidty guage! We just put up a piece of string;
If it flies in the breeze----Low
If it don't---------------------High!

Ah,what Ed said is true;the 'deer' will eat up your garden.

Now there is a place I know something about. I had to drive through a chains only snow storm there many years ago. And I think the 4 corners is getting hammered from the CA weather just yesterday.

Well at least in the ND, SD, NE and sometimes KS area - you always know what you are going to get. Hot, Cold, Wet, Dry....whatever drifts by.

...A strange bright item in the sky identified as the Sun is appearing off and on here in central Indiana this morning...NO rain....Just partly sunny and cold, probably for the weekend and Mon. and maybe Tue....Did not get the projected one inch of snow over night just a few flakes on top of the shrubs....Now maybe the flood waters can start to recede...Many folks have been hit with flood waters twice now in just a few weeks...Especially farther south in our state. But some around this area too and down White River....

In the winter time I can get very upset with Canada (not Canadians) because of the extremely large very cold air that is sent our way. Or maybe it's Andrew or Kevin getting revenge for us giving them a hard time. LOL.

The good news is that the freezing weather may slow the runoff enough the get water levels to drop faster. On the other hand, there's ice.

I think the only solution to bad weather where you live is to have your nicely equipped private jet close at hand to wisk you off to better climes on an hours notice.

I must say that Ed's description of the Texas Hill Country is tempting.
