Re the Bosler spill, cleanup looks like a great job for wild critters but I can't recall local ones. Wild turkeys and feral pigs aren't likely, canada geese are out of season and not enough water. Pronghorn antelope?

Due to wildfires across the state, the air here now rates 'chunky style' ala 1975 Burbank; may have to moisten the cloth mask and wear it indoors. New air fighting assets have been procured and stand ready but are grounded due to the low visibility. On top of that, an unusually long & hot heat wave (upper 90s+low 100s) for this area adds to the misery index. At least I got some refuge in Oakland (!) earlier with lower temps and better AQI.

Oh, yes, we're under Red Flag warning due to the tropical storm caused disturbance moving northeast. Possible thunderstorm activity ....

Are the "Rolling Blackouts" affecting your area. Heat wave plus overload can add to the misery. Good luck for all those people in California.

Some years ago a local fresh fruit dealer dumped a truck in the median of the Interstate.

Officials had the same thought - let Ma Nature deal with it.

There were so may animals hit on the road that they finally had to clean up the fruit.

Headed to Florida a few years ago - a produce truck overturned just South of the Florida/Georgia line - traffic was shut down for about 3 hours while the authorities got several Bobcats on the scene and shoved all the spilled produce into the St. Mary's River.

Three days later the local news was reporting that Fernandina Beach (downstream) was reporting that the town was being inundated with rotting produce floating in the river.  Duh!

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Methinks Uncle Pete may be re-thinking these monster trains. They blew-up another train at Maxwell, NE Saturday night-Sunday morning  (Mixed freight this time)...Hmm

The transcon is taking a beating this weekend. (Wonder if Jeff is about to get caught in the frenzy to get moving after both spectacular failures get cleared-up.) North Plate just became the world's largest parking lot.- Is #3 brewing out there???

Edit: After 13+ days, I-70 through Glenwood Canyon has re-opened on a limited basis. Will Uncle Pete detour through there and across the KP? (Amtrak 5/6 plus the local UP and BNSF rights train have been crawling through there for 5 days. The big fear now is rain caused mud & rock slides later this week.

Train derails between North Platte and Maxwella truck that is sitting in the grass: A massive pile up of rail cars Sunday east of North Platte.

The way they're talking, we may be lucky to see 70's for the next few days.  Signs of fall.

I'd like to see 70's.  We're in the middle of a heat wave with record-breaking temps in the upper 90's predicted for today and tomorrow.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

At that time of the ~100 degree days we had one day very close but not enough for rolling blackout here; not sure about the hotter areas near Bakerspatch.

After three days of terrible air quality, a little breeze and short duration sprinkle came in last night and the AQ improved dramatically (but still in Yellow today). Subject to change without warning as there are many wildfires around the state.

Need to call my cousin in Phoenix where the short break from 110+ degree temps has ended. Is my pizza ready?

Tommorrow is supposed to involve a trip through Glenwood Canyon. Could be interesting. (maybe by then the 40,000 pounds of chicken poop the agridummies dumped onto the interchange ramp to I-70 will be cleaned-up Ick!)

BossHen is supposed to be lacing up the (rain) dancing shoes. Long overdue storms might start showing up tonight.

We got three quarters of an inch of rain today, but the thunderbumpers they suggested never materialized.

Never saw +70F, either...

Had to balance a "Zoom" meeting and two radio nets tonight.  Thank goodness for mute, and no one noticed when I did talk on the radio.

Then, again, no one noticed my virtual background of the Huron River in MI.  The centerpiece of that image is the 1888 arch bridge, an icon of the village and still in use, now by Lake States Railroad.

Rain....FINALLY!

Sadly, going through Glenwood Canyon, the rain was not in the fire areas. Uncle Pete has had his hands full and got lucky this time.

We've had no rain here since the Deecho/tornado system nearly two weeks ago.  My Thursday-afternoon office (at the Peck House Museum, Lombard's oldest building) is open again.  It was nearly Ground Zero for the tornado, with trees destroyed in the back yard (the house, thankfully, was undamaged).

Across the street from the Peck, at Lombard Commons, they've finally cleared away a lot of the damage...if you haven't been by, the once tree-shaded building is now visible from the street openly, instead of being nestled among trees.  Startling and sad.

Temperatures finally moderated yesterday, making it a great day for a church picnic with all of the precautions and trimmings.

Today will be a fine day for going out somewhere, sometime...

Just caught this impressive YT footage taken near Amarillo TX, probably the BNSF Panhandle sub.

Note the UPS trailer with spilled packages, no longer meeting their delivery deadlines.

Anyone know what the weather backstory is?

One of the videos says Conway, TX, which would be on the line going to Ft. Worth, I believe. Good think I didn't order any Haggar trousers last week.

Mike: (DERECHO/ straight-line  wind event) and agree it looks like Panhandle Sub along US-60 (Even though Conway is not along that line, Conway was along the CRIP Amarillo-Little Rock line now mostly abandoned....BNSF has a portion now known as the Pullman Spur Sub to the west coming out of Amarillo via BN/FW&D)

91 degrees Sunday afternoon. 14 Hours later it's 46 degrees and Miningman is sending us another cold front (Yes! and the rain & snow coming with it knock down the fire and smoke... )
