Passenger on station platform to conductor of arriving train: "it's good you're here on time."
Conductor: "Yes, but this is yesterday's train!"

Electroliner 1935 ASM.TRANSITDOCS shows Amtrak #3/29 Ar. Dodge City (DDG) @ 5:04 AM 9 min early and no departure; next entry shows #3/29 Ar. La Junta 8:17 PM 12:28 min. late. Currently the train has left Needles CA (NDL) @ 2:21 PM 13:11 late. ASM.TRANSITDOCS shows Amtrak #4/29 Ar. Lamar CO (LMR) @ 10:02 PM 1:01 late and no departure; next entry shows #3/29 Lv. Dodge City (DDG) @ 2:28 AM 2:41 late. It has arrived Chicago today about 5:35 PM 2:45 late. And this does NOT compute in my mind. How can a train arrive Dodge City @ 5:04AM and lv @2:28 AM? Or is this a bus replacement?

Does it say how many days/weeks/months are between 5:04 AM and 2:28 AM? In any one week there are at least 7 of both of those times.

Euclid A news story with photograph would be interesting just to see how the derailment of such a unique type of train behaved. It may be relatively easy to rerail loaded, but also relatively easy to unload it before rerailing the empty cars. Of course, without any apparent news coverage, it may be very minor, like one car on the ground. But if that were the case, the fact of being a rail train would probably significantly increase the rerailing effort. I think a load of rails would tend not to be forced into pretzel shapes as is common when average deraiments tear up track.

Sounds like a real mess. Any preliminary theories as to the cause?
blue streak 1Cannot imagine the mess cleaning up all those twisted rails ?
Not too many of them may have gotten 'out' in pretzel shapes -- my guess is that this is a relatively 'contained' derailment as all those rails in guides would tend to hold the train upright and in line ... ASSuming of course it was a full rail train.
MC or others might comment, though, on how one re-rails a rail train that has extensively derailed -- can you do it 'car by car' to work it back in line, or is the lateral resistance so great that you have to remove some proportion of the rails endwise before you can work?
Leo_Ames Might not be too bad of a clean up. I doubt I've ever seen a rail train surpassing 20 mph.

I've seen them at or near track speed on the "open road."

Snowing pretty good over there right now. US-50 that parallels the railroad is closed in places near Syracuse, KS (halfway between LJ and Dodge)....because of ice.
Reports that rail train derailed in front of trains 3 and 4. Amtrak is going to bus bridge both trains/ Cannot imagine the mess cleaning up all those twisted rails ? Have not found any local media links.
