LithoniaOperatorSince I made my living with it, Photoshop is about all I know. But I believe the Mac Preview program has basic editing tools, as does the Photos app. I'll figure out something. Seems like work, though.
As a current Linux user I have no recent experience with Photoshop 'relatives', but I've found that the cross-platform Xnview MP has some useful capabilities and doesn't have a steep learning curve IMO. I would have suggested Irfanview also but that's Windows only. Btw Xnview is free ....

wow! Larry, that is an imposng picture!
I agree with you; if what you have works for what you want to do, why get something that does far more than what you need? My daughters, at times suggest that I get a more sophisticated telephone even though what I have is, ordinarily, sufficient for what I want to do.

I use an "ancient" nag-ware graphics program called "LView Pro." It's simple and does what I need for web work without tons of extra bells and whistles.
Comes in for slow scan TV in ham radio, too. Load the picture, resize it to the desired dimensions and, voila!

Thanks, Train Man.
Still in training.
LithoniaOperatorHmm. Very interesting. Yes, I did change it a wee bit in Photoshop. (I am a retired commercial photographer.) I think first I'll try a filename change. If that does not work (which would tell me there is an image-recognition aspect) , I'll try using something other then PS.
I use to use PS all the time to edit avatars, but one of the updates to this site did something. Once an image goes thru photoshop, this site will not accept it. I don't know why, just what I've experienced.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any
I just changed my avatar in about ten minutes, including the time it took to find an image and get it cropped down to size, although I had to go to my laptop to do it, as the desktop is still running Vista, and that didn't want to play.
My first avatar - and it was put up only recently, as some may recall - was from a file that was MUCH bigger than 100x100 pixels, and not square; it was rectangle. Most of what I shoot is not intended to ever be square. (During my film days, I did have to shoot some jobs with my Hasselblad gear, but I never really liked that format. However, that shutter/mirror made a nice solid clunk sound which was oddly pleasing.)
My initial avatar went up in a few seconds, and was automatically resized. But in that tiny size, it looked a wee bit dark to me (I'm a compulsive nut), so I took it down. I made the file a little brighter, and then kept trying to upload it, futilely.
Then, this morning, I kept trying to upload square versions of 99x99 pixels and less than 100 kb. Smallest pic files I ever dealt with, but they did not reward me. And neither did similar files of other images.
Hopefully it'll improve. I'll try again in a week or so. I may upgrade my Mac OS (something which always gives me the willies) in the meantime, and maybe that will help. Or maybe that will scramble my entire digital world in such disastrous ways that this "crisis" will fade into the background.
Anyway, this ain't trains. I'd rather be talking trains. Fell in love with them 64 years ago. The only really negative thing that ever happened to me in the railroad realm was at the very end of my time on the Georgia Railroad. And that is a story for another time. Or not.
My avatar comes from a large and complex JPEG file; initially I used it as a kind of test, to see if the 'automatic resize' worked. In the 2015 version of the site code, it did.
This tells me that there has been some major revision or replacement of the platform in the intervening time. I have noticed significant delays in some operations here, for the last day or two, which usually heralds some forum software tinkering. It is possible that the problem is temporary (or an unanticipated consequence of some change or conflict) and the tech people will fix it ... or explain to Brian why they couldn't .. in a reasonable time.
Thanks for responding, Brian. I tried that. I tried everything. Tried a new image.
I "browse" for the image and select it, and the progress bar does its thing and says it's been uploaded. But when I hit Upload and Use, I keep getting the same error message. It says:
Either the site is offline or an unhandled error occurred. We apologize and have logged the error. Please try your request again or if you know who your site administrator is let them know too.
I've killed many hours on this. I'm throwing in the towel. I guess I will have to just be a stick figure with a truncated name.
I would suggest that in your guidelines you state the character-limit for full visibilty of the screen name. (Now, maybe it was there and I missed it.)
Try making a square image, JPG, and less than 100x100 and 100Kb...

If then no dice, I'll change the image. Sheesh.
Thanks, Zugmann. BTW, ich spreche Deutsch. Great handle, man.
LithoniaOperator ... I cannot change my avatar. Been trying for days. Get an error message. Uh, yeah, this site can be a bit funky, IMO.

Have you edited the image any? If I try to edit an image down in my old version of PS elements, this forum will not accept it. But I can edit it in MS paint, and it will.
