Got my card from Carl as well, and the package folks were busy - a part for the truck, two gifts (for others), and my new phone (the old one is acting up and it's apparently a hardware issue).

Gonna be on the railroad all weekend - have to get busy and get my cards out!

While searching for a nearby Barnes & Noble, and a good place for lunch, we happened to encounter an inbound manifest freight on its (and our) approach to Elmhurst.  It was good for three sheets' worth of notes, and a lot of grist for the next report.  I bravely dated the next one for September 20...and I could probably take that long to update without seeing another train between now and then.  That's a good date...December 21 will be devoted to cleaning house (which is not saying we won't do anything before), and late on December 22 daughter Linda and family arrive.  By "late" I mean we won't leave the airport before it's December 23!

As of now, Christmas Day is our only chance (so far--that's as far as the forecast goes right now) of getting any snow between now and then.  I hope we get a little for our California family...Linda, especially, needs her Midwestern winter fix.

I, on the other hand, need clear roads.

Linda and family are with us until December 30, when they will board Amtrak for the return trip to California.  How about that--they go so slowly that they won't arrive until next year!

P.S.  How 'bout dem Bears?!

I've been having problems logging in on my laptop.  I happened to go to the Finescale Modeler forum and there is an announcement about the problem, that IT is working on it and a couple of possible temporary work-arounds until the problem is fixed.  I'll try them next time I fire up the laptop.  You would think an announcement like that would be posted on ALL the Kalmbach forums.

Pat and I got eight bags of leaves and two cans of twigs/branches ready to go out for tomorrow, our last day of yard-waste pickup.  I don't think we've eber done it in December before.

One of the fellows on our morning ham radio net had a bit of an interesting situation - he hadn't raked (and the leaves hadn't all fallen) before it snowed.  Then leaves came down on top of the snow, so he could rake them up, then the snow melted, so he could rake again.  Raking wet, matted leaves is no fun, according to him.

Two more days of Polar Express under my belt - four trips, well over 2,000 riders.  But I'm in the cab of one of the locomotives, so I don't see much of the crowd.

Taking next weekend off the railroad for our fire department holiday breakfast.

I would assume that both CSX and NS are re-positioning a fair number of Russell plows and some Jordan spreaders to take care of the snow in the Blue Ridge.  The problem will be finding enough crews otherwise qualified on the lines in question who know how to handle snowplow service.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Ns had an eastbound coal train with Bnsf power in the siding. Also the local was still uptown from Friday when I left work today. The Rio Grande unit came through last night on CSX but I was busy.Mc yes it opened up his eyes about what goes on with projects.Counties here in Ohio have doubled up agencies(not just engineers) to try and save money.Going to eat supper and relax.

Okay here is the fish story(Carl asked for it)

Best bait for ice fishing? peas. Yes peas.Line them around the hole and when the fish comes up and takes a pea you grab them.MC thanks for the package.

MC    -----  This may be a time that our eastern RRs wish they had a western partner.  CSX and especially NS is being inundated with  2 feet of heay snow and then freezing rain on top of that. Rainfall totals of 5" translates into alot of snow. Snow fighting is going to tax the 2 systems.  Saluda ( out of serice ) has 18" and old fort 16" with another foot forecast.  By the way forecasts have been all over the book as to how much snow and freezing rain.  NS stopped from NE of Gainesville Ga to Danville.+ several secondary routes in the Carolinas.  CSX not so much yet but soon except the Clinchfield from north of Kingsport to Charlotte.  Signal maintainers will need to be imported from all over.

Snow in the mountains to the west. Big snowstorms to the north and south. We get nothing. Something peculiar going on. ("Fishy" even Mischief)

Large, black 4" diameter tube en-route to Defiance with packing for Mr. Shadow to see more of what the A-E and S tribes do. Should hit Wednesday. (If the US Mule and their rubber tired bubbas are on the ball.)

Hope Matt got an eyefull while out with the county engineer. Not sure how that was arranged, but thanx to the local civil engineer for taking the time to show him around and explain the different things they do after surviving 4 years of brain damage and applying those tools to solve problems.(County engineers in Franklin County and Hamilton County were college classmates of mine ... plenty of counties out here in the stix that cannot afford an engineer. Even fewer have a county surveyor and too many folks don't know what either really does. And we wind up cleaning up the mess because of that which can get expensive.)

Mudchicken Nothing is worth taking the risk of losing a life over. Come home tonight in the same condition that you left home this morning in. Safety begins with ME.... cinscocom-west

It is really weird--I tried to login to respond to a news story--and could not. I was able to post here.

I sent a note to customer support; perhaps whoever is responsible will be able to find the bug, beetle, or whatever it is and crush it.
