Laugh           Zardoz said [in part]:  "...A duel was fought between Alexander Shott and John Nott. Nott was shot and Shott was not. In this case it is better to be Shott than Nott. Some said that Nott was not shot. But Shott says that he shot Nott. It may be that the shot Shott shot, shot Nott, or it may be possible that the shot Shott shot, shot Shott himself. We think, however, that the shot Shott shot, shot not Shott, but Nott. Anyway it is hard to tell which was shot and which was not..."

And Thus the tale ended... Nott was not shot; Shott was Nott shot !  Bang Head  SHOOT, shall we retire to the saloon, and have shots, and shooters ?

Whistling  A perfect end! Idea            BeerBeerDrinksDrinksSigh

Awe come on guys; do I have to call the grammer pleece?

Reporting for duty, Sir:

We'll begin with a box and the plural is boxes.
But the plural of ox should be oxen, not oxes.

The one fowl is a goose but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.

You may found a lone mouse or a whole set of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?

If I speak of a foot and you show me your feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?

If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why should not the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that and three would be those,
Yet hat in the plural wouldn't be hose.
And the plural of cat is cats and not cose.

We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say Mother, we never say Methren,
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine she, shis and shim,
So English, I fancy you will all agree,
Is the funniest language you ever did see.

There's no egg in eggplant, no pine or apple in pineapple.
Quicksand works slowly; boxing rings are square.
A writer writes, but do fingers fing?
Hammers don't ham, grocers don't groce.

You can comb through the annals of history, but not just one annal.
You can make amends, but not just one amend.
If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one, is it an odd or an end?
If the teacher taught, why isn't it true that a preacher praught?

Why is it that night falls but never breaks and day breaks but never falls?
In what other language do people drive on the parkway and park on the driveway?
Ship by truck but send cargo by ship? Recite at a play but play at a recital?
Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same
When a wise man and a wise guy are very different?
To overlook something and to oversee something are very different,
But quite a lot and quite a few are the same.
How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?

A duel was fought between Alexander Shott and John Nott. Anyway it is hard to tell which was shot and which was not.

To be fair, the grammar in our local newspaper isn't as good as that used by most posters on this forum. (OK, there are a few exceptions but we know he's doing it on purpose and he's making Progress) Then again, the paper gets 2/3 of their content from other papers off the newswire and they are no better.

Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.

BaltACD

Whomever at 'Trains' is culling stories from the media at large for their 'News Wire' stories is falling far behind in getting braking stories.  The Cumberland story on today's (5/17/18) News Wire is a week old in point of fact.

Bang Head         Since BaltACD has put this topic out there.  Permit me a couple of observations, and allow me to 'pile on'; to some similar observations concerning The Newswire.

As a frequent reader of 'The Wire' , it is hard not to notice, from time to time, the comments of several of the regular Posters on that site.

It would seem that there is presence there,of the English Spelling, and Grammar Police; on the side of the readership.      Not that it is not needed at times.       Particularly, when currently, the national press and editorial types seem to be wholesaling off, any reputations they might have had; where any semblence of accuracy in reportage could be important to them.      One likes to think, as a subscriber, that there would be a higher interest in the content, and accuracy level of the publishing Staff. Sigh

Are "braking stories" about brakemen?  WABCO?
