if it is overruning, definitely LIRR, and assuming from the posted referencdes, between LIRR Far Rockaway Station and the Mott Avenue Subway System station.  I assune the MTA wishes to hold on to the property in case they wish to  reestablish the connection between the lines in the future.

And you can ride Amtrak toward Albany from Penn. Sta. and easily see the area that could be mistaken for this one.

It could not be ex NYC trackage as it is over running third rail like the LIRR and the subways use. NYC used under running third rail.

I am sure that it is LIRR trackage.

I thought of the High Line when I saw it and see that someone else had the same idea.

As for why West Side RR I don't know? Maybe they just did not know what they were doing when they made the flick.

Hollywood often makes up names for RR's in film to avoid legal issues. I have seen this several times in CBS TV shows were there considerable RR scenes. Especially ones dealing with train wrecks, terrorism or atomic weapons.

Hollywood is also natorious for RR mistakes. Even "Unstoppable" had several.

There is not too many abandoned RR tracks in NYC with third rail. I still say based on the photos and my knowledge of the area that the old LIRR tracks are indeed the location of filming.

Look on youtube of videos along the old LIRR tracks. Comes pretty obvious the flicks location of filming.

Then is it the location between the end of the A train at Mott Avenue and the location of the LIRR Far Rockaway Station, or is it Creedmore or Country Life Press? Any would be overrunning third rail.

Why the designation West Side RR in the flick?

Guys, That is indeed the old LIRR tracks. I know the area pretty well and it is almost a dead give away seeing that bit of third rail in the picture.

I would love to see trains run on that line again. But, I doubt anything will ever come of the plans to do so? The neighborhoods along the tracks are pretty much against both live rail and electric third rail running through their backyards.

Plus NY is broke and does not have enough money to do anything with the line anyway.

The LIRR line reminds of the battle over the high line. Several of us wanted the subway to use the ROW. But with several sections of the line removed and the land now privately owned, Trying to do anything rail related would have been a nightmare.

Someone online said it was on the LIRR's Rockaway Beach branch.  I'm not familiar with stuff up there at all, but from pictures, it looks like it.  [shrugs]

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

thanks to the magic of Hollywood...MAYBE this was never a railroad. Maybe some rusty used rails were trucked into a level(ish) patch of forest and dumped for the prop dept. to "dress" the scene

Dave if it was the west side line then that is before HD TV. Our experts can determine if it is analog remastered to HD.

1. They could have used some footage filmed earlier and used tricks to superimpose action on a background. 2.  But perhaps my authoritative statement is not so authoritative afterall.  Can someone else determine if the third rail if overrunning or underrruning.  I cannot, with my present eyesight and computer skills, at 83.  If it is underruning then definitely the former West Side Freight Line as I posted, with trick photography employed for current action.  If overruning, then the abandoned LIRR Country Life Press or Credemore branches, whichever still has track that has not been removed.

The New York City Transit Authority does not have a setting like that, and the NYW&B catenary was revoved long ago, and never had third raill anyway.

The trick photography technique is to photograph the action in an all-matt-white sage setting with appropriate lighting, and then digitally mix it into the background. And  the background may have come from a video that consultants made when evaluating the requirements for rebuilding.

I can state authoritively that it is the West Side Freight Line near the area where it passes under the G. W. Bridge, filmed in the period after freigiht service stopped and before it was rebuilt as the Amtrak Albany line connection between Spuytin Dyvil and Penn Station.

Thank Ed Burns for asking me to look at this thread and answer the Question.

But Dave. Blue bloods was filmed this year not before the Albany line was activated.

Murphy Siding
Because the High Line doesn't feature dead bodies?

Mercifully no, but it almost did.

Wait a minute. This Blue Bloods scenery looks nothing like the High Line.

Doesn't the video show a covered third rail? like either a part of a former subway system line or the former NYC commuter line?

It reminds me of a You Tube video I saw where the videographer was walking along an abandoned section of Erie track in Rutherford NJ, but when you come right down to it it could be anywhere.

That is what I was thinking, but I am far from knowledgeable about New York City and its surrounding areas.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

I believe it was.  The NYC (southbound) split at Spuyten Duyvil, one branch heading to Grand Central Terminal and the other down the west side of Manhattan.

Thanks for the information. Was the West Side Railway part of the NYC System?

NP Eddie

I should have added that the scene was taped in Queens.

To what NP Eddie said:

I might be mistaken, but I saw the TV Show and I believe that the area of the filming was what was once referred to as the " High Line" a rail line that was elevated to serve a number of warehouses and manufacturing plants along its' path; in addition to passenger traffic on that portion of the line.

It was abandoned, and has been turned into what was once called a 'liniear park'.  See link @ http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2008/nov/18/new-york-high-line-park

ALL:

What was the history and location of long abandoned railroad tracks used in the 10 02 15 episode of "Blue Bloods"? I thought I saw wooden boxes as used in third rail operation.
